UT Martin Baseball ?

I heard several things over the weekend and both make a lot of sense and either would be a good conclusion to this mess. However, with the way this entire process has been handled, I do not expect either solution to be considered.

Did UTM hire Mike Hamilton to oversee this process?

What did you hear??

Bruin, here are a couple of things I have heard. David is interested in seeing if UTM will allow him to start in January. I am not sure if he has approached UTM with this but it is a possibility.

Several folks on campus have indicated support for Preston Ozment. Not sure if this has any traction but it was also mentioned by some folks who know. This one is an intriguing rumor and it will be interesting to see if it gains any legs over the next few days.

Who is Preston Ozment?

Ozment IS One Of The Most Connected Coaches In The State. Would Be Able To Recruit The Whole State. The Guy Has Won Over 300 Games And Coached Numerous D1 Players And Draft Picks. Just Not A Big nam like Rod D , But Im Not Sure Utm Needs A Big Name, Just Someone That Will Take Care Of THe Program And Plant Some Roots In Martin And Stay For Awhile.

Ozment also has been the coach for the Tennessee HS All Star team that plays in the Sunbelt Tournament. To put this team together each year, he has made many contacts across the state. He's a good coach, a class guy and an alumnus (and former player).

Preston would be a very solid choice for this position.

My friend Robert White, who is the Head Coach at Dyersburg State would have been a great choice. I worked with him for 3 years and he does a great job with the smallest JUCO in the state. Each yr they contend for the Region title and are usually nationally ranked. I believe he has won over 500 gaems at Dyersburg. He has shown the ability to win with an extremely small budget and it astonishes me he hasn't received serious attention for the positition.

What you all are missing is that the top tier Tennessee players do not come to Martin. They go to UT, Vandy, Middle, Belmont on and on. There is talent at UTM right now just needs the right person to instill discipline and structure into the program. I am not saying do not recruit Tennessee because you have to in order to make your scholly dollars stretch. From a recruiting standpoint you have to go after the top tier Tenn guys but if you put all of your eggs in that basket you will be in trouble come the summer because most of the players will go else where. I recruited there and know from experience. We were able to sign some quality tenn players as well as a good mix of players from out of state. We were very successful those two years. It is possible to win at UTM and once a few successful seasons happen more in state players will start coming.

Robert White was one of the first to inquire about the UTM job. He would have loved to have had the job and would do a very good job there. He was probably a casualty of the posted requirements for the job since he has no D1 recruiting experience. White has done a great job at DSCC.

Just heard the Sky Hawks are possibly pursuing one more candidate (?) for the job on a full time basis. If this doesn't work, look for the current asst to take the job on an interim basis and the circus will come back to town next spring after the season.

Eveyone's missing the obvious choice. He's tanned, rested, and ready and still living in Martin-----bring back Vernon!!:)

Understand the point of no D1 coaching experience but neither did Mike Corn. He was "Head of Baseball Operations" which is a liason for hotels and such. I certainly believe Robert would be a guy to put UTM in contention every year. He is a relentless recruiter and a wonderful coach in practices and games. It just shocks me because he recruits only in state becuase DSCC won't give out of state waivers like everyone else in conference and he still wins each yr. And let's face it, DSCC could probably manhandle UTM right now in baseball. I really hope UTM gets someone who would put all they have into program. I grew up in Obion County and really like UTM.

Give us a name!! You have been very tied in on this! Thanks

Bruin, I haven't been able to identify this last possible candidate. However, it may be a moot point. The AD is meeting with the team today at 4:00 pm.
