UT or UNC for the Last #1 Seed

Not that he's the final word, but I doubt winning the SECT would be enough to get the 1 seed. The decision will certainly be made before Sunday anyway. Barnes should cut the starters minutes and let the reserves get the lions share of minutes in the SECT. If we go home Friday, so be it. Rest up and get ready for the NCAAs. What a kick to the nads it would be to bust our humps chasing the SECT title and end up the 2 seed anyway only to be gassed and make an early exit from the NCAA tournament. Nah. Don't let the committee screw us twice.
I been around to see both strategies work and not work, truth is winning a conference tournament doesn’t prevent teams from going far or even winning it all in the NCAA tournament but also losing it works sometimes too. I don’t think there is a big difference in either strategy

Every bracket on the matrix is now updated since this weekend. It looked like Tennessee was a #1 on 65 brackets, UNC was a #1 on 57. The gap closed quite a lot vs Sunday. Tennessee is now 1.45 and UNC 1.55. It was around 1.2 for Tennessee to 1.8 for UNC.

With basically no Power 5 games being played since then too. Ridiculous. Win 2 and I think we have it.

I just think we would benefit from a rest more than what I consider a futile attempt to get a 1 seed. Our last 4 games have been a rough, rough stretch. Knecht especially got beat up pretty good. And not to beat a dead horse, but Barnes didn't do a lot of development on this bench during the year. When I look at our bench, it's really Mashack. Awaka is limited offensively and very foul prone. Don't even get me started on Gainey. Barnes is playing him so much to keep daddy happy. I'm sure he's gotten interest for head jobs and we've got a recruiting class on the line. Gotta land those guys and that's gonna be hard if pops jumps ship. Might be a point of contention with some, but that's the only thing that explains his minutes. Carr, Dillione, Estrella and Phillips just aren't ready to help under tournament conditions. The rest also might freshen Vescovi's legs which might help his shot. He expends so much energy on his defense that it has to take a toll. He's simply not that athletic and defenders in this league can make his life hard. He needs all the spring in his legs he can get. Fatigue might also be part of why we're missing so many free throws. Yeah, all speculation on my part, but again, they will not give us a 1 seed and I don't see UNC going out of their tournament early. They'll at least make the championship game and by then the decisions have been made. Nope. get out and get home. Rest this team and give it all you got as a 2 seed.

No one even got the chance to get you started on Gainey.

Do you have data to support the “rested” argument?

Better than being behind them, makes me feel even stronger of my previous take that if we win 2 we’ll have a strong shot, assuming UNC also wins at least 2. If that’s the case I think the committee sets the field by Saturday day and doesn’t pay much attention after that.

Who are these multiple recruits in 2024 on the line?

Depends on a lot more than that. Who do we play and beat? if we win 2 means we lost 1 who did we lose to? Does UNC win their tourney and who do they play? What happens to teams like Florida and NCstate their fates matter to us and UNC. I know people want some simple answer but things are rarely that way.

Sigh...we have several that have been mentioned as visiting so I'd assume there's mutual interest. To me that's enough to phrase it in such a way, but if you want to be the jester of word play, I suppose "on the line" might not be as accurate in the realm of fishing for example, but in the context of the old school party lines from back in the day, it's accurate enough. Folks could listen or hang up. If there was interest in who was talking and what they were saying, they'd stay on the line.

Geez...anyone ever told you that you can be tiring at times? And yes, I know I opened the door. I'm well aware of my unpopularity on the boards.

Data? On fatigue impacting players and their shot? Like it's an experiment? Seriously? That's what you come with? You disappoint me BTO.
No, a simple, how teams with test fair vs. teams without as much rest fair in the NCAAT. Simple concept.

Once again, who? I’m unaware of what 2024’s you’re possibly referencing that apparently you’re saying multiple people have been discussing as visiting???

Gotta be honest. I don't need some study or test to tell me about fresh vs dead legs in any sport. Then again you have the internet just like I do. You go for your studies and data, and I'll just stick with common sense.

Well your “common sense” take is incorrect, not a surprise though given your recent post history, your hit rate would even make a MLB hitter cringe for an average.

In fairness to the other side of this coin— They’ll have more rest than they have in a normal week of conference play. They’ll have five days with no game prior to the tournament and then a minimum of four off following the tournament, if we play in the final. In both weeks they miss the normal two/three day turnaround of conference play. They get the benefit of both the bye, and the noon slot for each playing day. Hopefully they can recover by next Thursday/Friday no matter how they fare in the tournament. I’ll admit my toddler nap study contradicts this, but I’ve heard the plan to give Dalton two snacks on game day and a lollipop.

All 122 brackets aren’t updated daily. Some of them go 3-4 days in-between. My point being some of them likely moved UNC to the 1-line on Monday after not having updated their projections since Thursday/Friday.

Hit rate? Depends on my target I suspect. A few know. Most do not...and that tickles me.

From my unique and bad takes perspective, we've done the SECT thang. We won the regular season title which I consider to be THE conference championship vs the tournament. We have that glass ceiling which seems impenetrable for us. It's not often we get a player like Knecht on this roster and combine it with the talent and experience we have. Not since Ernie and Bernie did I see a UT team that could finally break through. We have that potential this year. I'll gladly go out in the first round of the SECT for the chance at a final 4. It's like an MLB team that gives up some prize prospects for the one player who makes the difference between a playoff team and one that can win a world series. Gimme all the rest we can get even if analytics and studies don't support doing it.

I would love to see the data on how often a 1-seed or 2-seed loses their first game in their conference tournament and then proceeds to make a Final Four. My guess is not that often. You want to be playing your best ball in March. We just lost to Kentucky. Riding a 2-game losing streak into the Big Dance is not that appealing.

Fair point, but the goal is to cut minutes. If they lose under those circumstances, I'd hope this team is mature enough to recognize the situation for what it is. If so, I think the damage to their psyche would be minimal. But I gotta wonder if the data supports this line of thought?
