UT/VA Tech @ Bristol?

#VaTech to play #Tennessee at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2016, per source. Expected to draw a record 150,000-160k fans.

Discuss...

That's a cool pic but the field is going to be about a 3rd of that size

So we assume Butch is still our coach. But for Virginia Tech would you guess theirs will be Frank Beamer, Bud Foster or the field?

Is this one of those "You might be a redneck if" jokes.

There was a school down here (East High School) that had to be shut down due to black mold a few years back...They had to take classes at BMS while they fixed the mold problem...it made national news at the time and Jay Leno made the joke "If you graduated from Bristol Motor Speedway....You might be a redneck"

"The Tennessee Volunteers and Virginia Tech Hokies have agreed to play a football game in 2016 at Bristol Motor Speedway, where a record 160,000 fans could be in attendance, according to a source.

This is an event that had been talked about for years. It is unknown exactly where the playing field will be placed relative to the track and infield, which is composed entirely of asphalt.

The Bristol Motor Speedway location makes it ideal for fans from both teams to get to. It is unknown where on the schedule the game will fit.

This September, Michigan announced a record crowd of 115,109 for its defeat of Notre Dame, breaking a record from 2011, the previous time the teams played at Michigan Stadium" (Joe Schad,
Source: Tennessee Volunteers to play Virginia Tech Hokies at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2016 - ESPN).

Positives:
Recruiting tool (you can play in front of the largest football crowd ever)
160,000 screaming fans
Off campus site - can sell alcohol
National TV attention for sure
Brent Dougherty on 104.5 Nashville called it "the Woodstock of football"
Gruden hopefully won't be there
Keeps the Vols names in the news now and then closer to game time.

Negatives:
Off campus site - can sell alcohol
160,000 screaming fans

I'm sure Administration worked this out but now it looks like Butch's trip there earlier this year with some of his assistants may have been a scouting trip.

Finally! I want another crack at VA Tech. I live in Roanoke and all these Hokie fans think their program is on the same level as UT. They have been competitive the last few years but they do not have the tradition UT has. This feeling of competitiveness is new for them and their fans are the worst. You could fit Lane stadium inside of Neyland. Go Vols destroy Tech. By then we will have a couple recruiting classes by CBJ and we will roll them.

I live in Roanoke valley as well. Technically they have been on a higher competitive level than TN whether they are in Acc or not. From Michael Vicks time until a few years ago they pretty much would have rolled us majority of the time. Theyve had consistent good coaching. Vt always finds a way to be competitive. Even the bama game this year, they play up to competition.

Okay, so I put together a scaled image of what a football field would look like at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Assuming the Allison Terrace and The Allisons sections are the same width as the front straightaway, which measures 650 ft., a football field with endzones would be slightly wider than 1/2 the front straightaway.

Seats will be a good distance from the field... Perhaps they can put some sort of temporary bleachers all the way around the field that wouldn't block the view from the permanent BMS seats.

Someone could make a killing selling orange binoculars at the game.
