UTAD cutting band funding/involvement? (Merged)

Newsflash, UT isn't a pro team, nor should it try to be.

Wow, thanks for clarifying UT's amateur status.

Since you opted to ignore my point the first time around, football is about football not about providing a showcase for bands to march around. Band involvement has been part of the mix in college ball but again, not its primary focus.

Would you NOT go to a UT football game if they didn't have a band? Sure, some folks might like the band or, more likely, the idea of the band because of tradition...etc but let's not overstate the value proposition.

I personally like the Power T to start home games and feel that would be a loss but really couldn't care less about half-time shows...etc.

If I wanted to go to a football game without a band, halftime shows, only piped music, etc I'd become a legit fan of an NFL team.

People talk about the band and 144 years and what not, but there is something that has changed and in the past decade has made a big difference - TV time outs.

You've seen him, the guy in the red hat standing on the 20. He dictates the flow of the game. Before TV time outs, you did not have near the amount of game-stoppage as we have today. The band is not filling all of that time so I imagine the University is looking for a way to capitalize on that time with recorded music and advertising through the jumbotron and ribbon boards. I do not think this was intended to be an assault on POTS but it seems they have taken it that way. The band today has 3.5 - 4 hours from kickoff to final score. 144 years ago they probably had 2 - 3 hours of game time to fill.

Does the band really think 100,000 people come to see them play on Saturdays? Get with the program and improve the quality of product, or shut up about it.

Not the point. This isn't about the quality of the band. Most everyone agrees that there needs to be improvement. The issue is about losing pieces of our identity. I pass an NFL stadium every Saturday to drive 3 hours to Knoxville to see (arguably) worse football in college because of the pageantry and connection I have with the University.

They will still form the T and do the Vol Walk will they not?

It is though. If they want to play something when the band is not playing, that's fine, but they want the band to ONLY play Rocky Top and ONLY after Touchdowns. That's going to be a death knell for the band.

Phase 1: Phase out Stands Tunes
Phase 2: Phase out their seats in the stand
Phase 3: Kill the band.

Sousa, the Pride, sad to say but it is all the same. They are linked together and always will be. If Sousa sucks, well, the Pride only plays what he allows them to play.

To say it is a stupid statement? Look, you can stick your feet in the mud and say kids should come to Tennessee because of the traditions we have in place. I agree with that and am not saying we trash long held traditions. I am saying that when recruits come to games it is nice to have a packed student section and a band that, aside from Rocky Top, engages the fans and student section by playing something other than Living On A Prayer. If you want the student section to stay status quo along with the band because of so called "tradition" then go right ahead. I am in the group that is calling for changes, whatever they might be, while also still upholding the traditions we have grown to love.

If you want a less than stellar turnout for the student section to go along with the band playing the same boring songs to attract the "right kind of recruit", have fun living on that island because it is not for me.

We completely agree then. Don't mistake my support for the traditions of this program for support of all things POTS. I honestly have no dog in that hunt except for my attendance at UT games for the last 23 years.

And, as I've said before, who gives a damn what the rest of the SEC does? We are Tennessee. We have our things that make us Tennessee.

Yea winning is part of what makes us Tennessee and guess what we are winning so time to try something new and stop leaning on 98

For now. But what will stop them from bringing in a blow up tunnel and smoke machines later on? Slippery slope.

Not as slippery as you are making it out to be. How I take this is that Hart wants the bad to improve it's product and play more relevant music. Let's be honest, the quality of the POTS isn't what it used to be.

Down the field, Rocky Top, and the band versus piped in music in general are what's at stake. These are important pieces of the college football experience at Tennessee. I'm good with some piped in kickoff or even the occasional promotional video.

Surely there's a good balance I'm just afraid that the pendulum swings too far.

I think we saw the balance last Saturday.

You say that now, but the minute recruits start saying, "Boy I'd love to come out to some AC/DC and emerge from a smoke screen", you think UT will say "Forget it that's not what we do here."?

And, yet again, I agree that the band needs to improve in itself.

So you admit you, as well as others, admit you could be overreacting based on assumptions?

We will always have Rocky Top and Running through the T. Any game day with "Living On A Prayer" being played or " Wizard of Oz" half time shows is nothing but a good thing.

I've never once heard anyone let alone a recruit say anything remotely negative about running through the T. You're reaching now.

Lol. If this is the prevailing thought of the day than we are in trouble. Getting and retaining a top notch coach with top notch assistants is what will get us back to winning. Complete support from the fan base and a highlighting the things that make us different is what will get us back to winning. Anyone who has ever started a business will tell you the key to success is differentiation and leadership. Not mimicking the competition.

For the longest time, recruits didn't want to wear anything but the Orange and White. If an Oregon or USC does it, then it may happen.

Weird that last Saturday has been described by several as one of the best atmosphere's they have ever seen at Neylad. Change is bad!

Lol. I loved the atmosphere from last Saturday and I think it was close to a good balance. It was not the "best ever" but definitely the best that it's been in a while.

But Neyland was like that game in and game out not that long ago and it had nothing to do with what music was playing.
