UTAD cutting band funding/involvement? (Merged)

Lol. I loved the atmosphere from last Saturday and I think it was close to a good balance.

But Neyland was like that game in and game out not that long ago and it had nothing to do with what music was playing.

Nothing? Do you think living or a prayer gets anyone excited?

For the longest time, recruits didn't want to wear anything but the Orange and White. If an Oregon or USC does it, then it may happen.

Miami was doing it that way while winning national championships 25 years ago. The T is safe.

Sounds pretty legit. There is very little argument to the notion that high school and collegiate football players prefer popular music to marching bands

I still cringe when I hear that rap music they play now at the games.

Maybe some band members. I'm glad you can pretend to know me.

I mean...I've seen your drivel spewed here for years, always chastising work that others do, simply because you can. It's really a logical jump, not just an assumption.

Sousa needs to send a Pep band to the South Carolina game and tell Butch to enter through that T.

No I don't agree with everybody for the sake of being liked on a messageboard & I don't simply "bow out" to avoid responses like yours. I can tell you have a ton of bff's on here.

Knowing Sousa's "with us or against us" personality, I wouldn't rule that out.

However, he's smart enough to know that he and the entire staff would be out of a job if they tried something like that. This is a situation that can't be fought fire-with-fire. The Pride needs the AD way more than the AD needs the Pride, and I think that's where this whole pissing match is coming from.

Instead of crying out, work out a compromise. In the basketball world, especially in post-season tournaments, each team's band is given portions of the time-outs to play. These slots are scripted, and they work in canned music, as well as jumbotron videos. I don't see why that can't work for football as well.

That doesn't eliminate the impromptu "OH MY GOD! HUGE PLAY! ROCKY TOP ROCKY TOP ROCKY TOP!!!!" moments, but it will eliminate any dead periods that may arise during the course of the game.

Would you have guessed 15 even 10 years ago that we would have to change our uniforms and add a color to appease to recruits? I sure as hell didn't. I would've been reaching then if I brought that up.

Our uniforms haven't changed except for a one a year alternative based on tradition. I get it, you're passionate about the band, but you are overreacting.

It seems their are a lot of people mouthing off about the band not traveling for out of town games because of cost. Well how many of you actually have season tickets with the contributions that go with it. And think about the liability ins. travel stipends, bus rentals it isn't cheap. So unless people are ready to give money. and I mean a lot of money, something has to give. Do the math, just saying. I love the band, circle drill the best it always gives me goose bumps, but come on can these bright and talent kids not be allowed to play more up dated music. It's 2013 (living on a prayer, and send in the clowns this Saturday) come on. Can we not have tradition and fun. And hey I'm a 59.

Roughly 300 Tennessee students put in roughly 20 hours a week in an effort to better the gameday experience of fans like you, me and 100k others. Instead of at least respecting them for using their craft to try to help, you act like a heartless dick. If you've read my posts here, I've been critical. Very critical. But there's a way to critique and there's a way to just be an ass. You're being an ass.

Do you think the marching band exists without the football team? Sorry if I get straight to the point but the majority of those 100k fans come to watch football. They love the forming of the T. They love hearing rocky top, down the field, etc during the game. They don't give a rats ass about a 20+ year old Bon jovi song. Outside of Saturday game days the majority just don't care. That's just the truth. If the numbers DeerPark stated were correct they would probably care even less.

Weird that last Saturday has been described by several as one of the best atmosphere's they have ever seen at Neylad. Change is bad!

I'm always amused by the way in which so many paint "tradition" as the bad thing and "change" as the good thing. Change is neither bad nor good -- it's simply change.

I hate living on a prayer as much as anyone but I really dont recall a single time they have played it this year.

While I agree that they could update some of the music, I feel like I must point out that the band program predates Tennessee football. Though they may not exist in the same capacity, the band would likely exist without football.

The Email was shared on VQ putting all this mess to rest.

I appreciate more than you know that you didn't just join the herd and rush to conclusions. Let me try to hit the concerns top-line with the thought that we may issue some kind of statement at some point:

UTAD has reduced its financial commitment to the band in the past couple years. It's worth noting that in the past two years, UTAD has reduced its overall budget by almost $10 million. Virtually every sport and department have been impacted.

As a result the full band does not travel to as many away games as it has in the past.

We have not reduced in any significant way the amount of time that the band plays during the game. We haven't added "commercials." We've asked the band to work with us to better coordinate the breaks, with the goal being to make sure we're creating the best competitive atmosphere possible in Neyland Stadium. We have weekly Football Production meetings. The band participates in those meetings, there aren't any surprises on Saturday. The use of canned music is part of our overall strategy and can be an effective part of it.

A· We have not told the band they can only play "Rocky Top." In fact, we've told them that after we score, the Pride has the whole break. They can start with "Rocky Top" and then move on to other selections at their discretion. If we do anything on the video board during this time, it doesn't have audio, i.e. "Vols in the NFL" or "SEC Leaders."

We've said to everyone involved in football production, including the band, that we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard. The team deserves it.

A· We have not "threatened" to reduce the number of student tickets. In fact, we've engaged the student leadership regarding any and all student plans and we've consistently assured them that we will accommodate all students that want to attend, even if that means adjusting the allocation from year-to-year or even in-season. SGA leadership would be happy to back this up.

There is a whole lot of misinformation involved with this petition. Perhaps the saddest part of this is it comes days after we all witnessed the Neyland Stadium of old. While devastated by the loss, I was very proud of our team, our fans, and our students. It's a shame that some have decided to put themselves above the University as a whole.

First of all, the band started decades before the football team, so literally yes. Without the existence of the football team, the band would still exist.

All 100k are there to watch football. I never said that they weren't. I said that the band is there to enhance the experience. The stupid point you're trying to make is invalid.

If the team was winning, there'd be zero complaints about the band and demanding this sort of change.

No 1998 called and wants its play list back from the band, maybe if we didn't have to see things such as the wizard of oz or doggy in the window there would be no complaints

I posted an email in the petition thread from the senior associate atheltic director putting all of this to rest.
