UTAD cutting band funding/involvement? (Merged)

What???? Misinformation abound?! No effing way...

Just another chapter in the book of "What will VN ***** about today?"

Sousa needs to send a Pep band to the South Carolina game and tell Butch to enter through that T.
Don't get me wrong, I love the POTS..... but

Sorry, people would still come to games. I don't pay money to see the band.

Threats like that would fall on deaf ears.

I posted an email in the petition thread from the senior associate atheltic director putting all of this to rest.

Haha, putting all this to rest. RIGHT.

Your post will get swallowed up and at least 40 more people will comment.

The Email was shared on VQ putting all this mess to rest.

I appreciate more than you know that you didn't just join the herd and rush to conclusions. Let me try to hit the concerns top-line with the thought that we may issue some kind of statement at some point:

UTAD has reduced its financial commitment to the band in the past couple years. It's worth noting that in the past two years, UTAD has reduced its overall budget by almost $10 million. Virtually every sport and department have been impacted.

As a result the full band does not travel to as many away games as it has in the past.

We have not reduced in any significant way the amount of time that the band plays during the game. We haven't added "commercials." We've asked the band to work with us to better coordinate the breaks, with the goal being to make sure we're creating the best competitive atmosphere possible in Neyland Stadium. We have weekly Football Production meetings. The band participates in those meetings, there aren't any surprises on Saturday. The use of canned music is part of our overall strategy and can be an effective part of it.

A· We have not told the band they can only play "Rocky Top." In fact, we've told them that after we score, the Pride has the whole break. They can start with "Rocky Top" and then move on to other selections at their discretion. If we do anything on the video board during this time, it doesn't have audio, i.e. "Vols in the NFL" or "SEC Leaders."

We've said to everyone involved in football production, including the band, that we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard. The team deserves it.

A· We have not "threatened" to reduce the number of student tickets. In fact, we've engaged the student leadership regarding any and all student plans and we've consistently assured them that we will accommodate all students that want to attend, even if that means adjusting the allocation from year-to-year or even in-season. SGA leadership would be happy to back this up.

There is a whole lot of misinformation involved with this petition. Perhaps the saddest part of this is it comes days after we all witnessed the Neyland Stadium of old. While devastated by the loss, I was very proud of our team, our fans, and our students. It's a shame that some have decided to put themselves above the University as a whole.

honestly sounds like a lot of backpedaling to me. I'm more inclined to believe every member of the Pride of the Southland than I am the UTAD. They all wouldn't get together and say "Let's Eff with the UTAD cause we can." They had a reason to say what they said and I believe them.

If that e-mail had come from Dave Hart, I would be on your side. However, it's from Chris Fuller, who (not that amounts to a hill of beans) I've met personally, and he comes across as a genuine kind of guy that cares a lot about the University.

I tend to lean more towards Pride leadership got wind of something, or was told something they didn't like, felt threatened, and over-reacted.

This will go completely over the heads of many on here. It's much more fun to play chicken little than to actually take a deep breath and let common sense take over.

I emailed them all anyway. Let my voice be heard. Whether its overraction on the Pride's part or Backpedaling on the UTAD's part. I want them to know that College football is not college football to me without the marching band.

Well good luck with that. Marching bands are going the way of the dinosaur. Adapt, or live without college football.

Of course you do. It's more fun to freak out over nothing.

Do you think the marching band exists without the football team? Sorry if I get straight to the point but the majority of those 100k fans come to watch football. They love the forming of the T. They love hearing rocky top, down the field, etc during the game. They don't give a rats ass about a 20+ year old Bon jovi song. Outside of Saturday game days the majority just don't care. That's just the truth. If the numbers DeerPark stated were correct they would probably care even less.

The marching band existed 27 years before the football team.

Of course you do. It's more fun to freak out over nothing.

Ask Carson-Newman about Freaking out over nothing when "rumors" of the band getting cut actually happened. It may have not happened for very long because our boosters and alumni got pissed when they came to homecoming and no band, but there's always some truth to rumors.

That's fine. If college football becomes even more NFLJr, I probably will anyway.

I have a few friends in the MTSU band (widely known). When they came to Knoxville 2 years ago, their band blew ours out of the water. They were so much louder and played so many new and upbeat songs. Even though they were losing pretty bad, their fans were dancing and everything throughout the whole game. It's time Sousa either quits or decides not to be stubborn and get new music

You are obviouly either tone- deaf or fan of the digital rap-crap. MTSU Band is not renowned, just loud, raucous & outta tune.

The band isn't getting cut.

This is NOT what Fuller said in his memo to Dr. Gary Sousa this week on details about the game. We have a reason behind our uproar, and Fuller is not letting on about it.

Can this memo be shared? Can you give us any details, or have someone unrelated post the details if it's not safe for you to post the same?

I don't mean to offend anybody. Don't want to take away from accomplishments. Not gonna lie to you. This may sound racist, but
I really don't care if the band is there or not. Over it. Been over it since I sat in a hot as hell SEC champ game against LSU a few years ago and was 2 rows behind the tubas. Dudes work hard. **** got old. Fast. Up every second. I mean, are you fasting kidding me. What the fast.
