Article on Utah State's mindset going into the big game. I don't think they know what they're in for
Utah State football confident heading into big game at Tennessee | KSL.com
Hitler felt confident before Stalingrad...
I think all these media sources drinking the USU koolaid are just going to fuel the fire of this passionate fan base. I think Neyland is going to be super loud and fans are going to be extra raucous to make it as difficult as possible on the Aggie offense
It hasn't happened but has come very close to happening the last few yrs..Troy should have beaten us, South Alabama easily could have, UAB several yrs ago and Utah St is way better than those 3..Hope to god it doesn't happen but definitely not a gimme first game.
Those games always seemed to two or three games into the season and when we were either coming off a hard loss or looking ahead to tougher opponents. We then bounced back and had played lights out against top SEC schools. If i'm not mistake after the close win against South Alabama we ended up playing our two best games of the year vs. Georgia and then USCjr after the bye .
I don't think we are overlooking UTS. We've had all summer to think of this game. Plus I don't think we are looking ahead to Arky St. It reminds me of playing NC State in our opener a few years ago. They had some really high quality athletes, better then anything U.St. has and Dooley was able to get our guys ready to play them. If Dools can do it, I'm not worried about Butch motivating our guys to play in an opener against a quality team. If our guys show up motivated and ready, we'll beat them. Still should be an entertaining game with it being close early but we'll pull away in the second half.
This doesn't really pertain to your post exactly just a general comment about the article:
Also players have to be confident, even if they know deep down they are outmatched talent wise, so I don't blame the U.St. players talking. They very well can't go around sulking saying "we'll give it the ol' try." What do we expect them to say? Granted I think players should respect every opponent no matter the school. Believe me the U.St. coaches are NOT playing us down. Nor is Butch playing them down. I guarantee both coaches have motivated their players by talking the other opponent's talent up. Coaches do this to get kids mentally prepared for a knockdown drag out fight, if it comes down to it. But they won't say that the opponent is unbeatable, they will tell players that it'll take a battle to win but the players must be motivated and want it more. The confidence is just a reflection of their hard work over the past off season.
USU should feel confident. If I was a USU fan, I'd feel confident too. However, if I was a USU fan, I would be primarily familiar with mid-major talent match-ups, and unfamiliar with the difference that 4-5 star players generally make. I'd also be unfamiliar with what UT has done to upgrade its team talent and speed over the off-season too.
If I were a USU fan, I'd be a bit heady about recent success in a small pond and then I'd see a 5-7 team on the schedule, having no clue what a real strength of schedule actually means.
Absolutely, I'd be confident. I'd also go home crushed and confused after the game. After sleeping on it, I'd get on a USU forum and vent about how all the rich programs get richer--all the big programs load up on talent--it's impossible for the little guy to get ahead.
I'd cry a river then bite my fingernails about what Boise St, Utah and BYU may do to us this year. If I was one of the guys coming on Volnation making an ass of myself, I'd delete the internet favorite and never return.
If I were a USU fan, that is...
Just a few quick facts from the rosters I saw.
USU Oline - Average weight = 289
UT Oline - Average weight = 308
USU WR's - Average 6ft 167lbs
UT WR's - Average 6'1" 200;bs
USU CB's Average 5'8" 179lbs
UT CB's Average 5'9" 190lbs
USU DL Average 269lbs
UT DL Average 308lbs
USU RB's = average 185lbs
UT RB's = average 197lbs
USU LB average = 227lbs
UT LB average = 226lbs
And for the hell of it their QB's = 193 pounds our QB's = 215
If the conditioning is as good or better than last year I don't see USU surviving 4 quarters just from sheer lack of size.
I can't tell if all the polygamist jokes are halfway serious or done fully in jest.
I just wanted to add though that I grew up in Utah my entire life and then attended Utah st. and never once even saw or encountered a polygamist. I'm not sure you guys really know what Utah is like.
