Vacation / Travel

Take, unless I end up with some company that allows me to bank an unholy amount of hours.

Currently, our company has some pretty bullsh!t PTO rules, so I will sit at home before I took a payout. (They're also fond of stopping the accrual of PTO if you're at your max, which is a garbage practice we're having to fight.)

I get three weeks. Usually a week at a beach or resort, 3 or 4 long weekend type trips, and keep a week in reserve.

I don't know which is worse, people that just won't take off time, or those that do and won't really disconnect. My boss is like that. Still answering emails and all that.

To hell with that.

My wife fractured her hip Sunday and we are supposed to go to Cozumel on the 31st. I think she is gonna try and tough it out. I requested a wheelchair at the resort and got extra leg room seats on our plane trips. Wish us luck!

Sorry to hear that. Hope she gets better and you guys can enjoy Cozumel.

Hope you are not flying Southwest.. They are the king of preboards... You might 10-15 to board

Returning to American food after a month of eating big (and generally healthy) in Peru is a sh***y affair.

You work for me?

Dang Newt..that sucks. But nothing like warm water and sunny beaches to help you recuperate.

Going to be driving the PCH from LA to SF in June. Any must see stops during the drive? Nothing too lengthy as we must arrive that day to SF.

Doing it in one day?

First, make sure it is open all the way through. There was a big slide last year that closed a portion of the road near Big Sur. A bridge was damaged also, but I am almost certain that reopened.

Nepenthe in Big Sur is a great place to have a drink, spectacular views. Check out McWay Falls in Big Sur also. Carmel is cool to walk around and the beach is beautiful. You can walk up to one of the holes at Pebble Beach. Aquarium in Monterey is cool.

If there is any way you can stretch it to two days, do so.

Echo some of what NorCal said. PCH is still closed IVO Mud Creek.. last I heard it was supposed to be open sometime this summer but I highly doubt it. If you want to see Big Sur right now the best way to do it is to approach from the North from either Monterey or Carmel. Pfieffer Bridge has reopened which allows access to see most of the good stuff. Nepenthe is a great restaurant, but I actually prefer Ventana just across the street as it's usually much less crowded. Around Monterey.. Pebble Beach, a walk down the coastal trail in Pacific Grove, and the aquarium are must do's. Do not plan to do LA to SF in 1 day. Make it enjoyable and take 2 days. If HWY 1 is still closed you can stop in Paso Robles along HWY 101 and enjoy some great wine.

I thought you would know if 1 was still closed. I forgot about Pacific Grove, agree with that and Paso.

Thanks guys. Definitely will check road conditions before heading out. I’m reserving the option to drive back down to Carmel from SF for one of our days.

anyone spent any time in Maine?

we just traded our Florida time share week for a week on the coast of Maine during September...between ETSU and Florida games.

unfortunately we are missing the lobster fest by a week but I doubt they will be out of them.

We are staying in Rockland, Maine. Any can't miss things recommended?

I’ve never been to Maine, but, if I were going, particularly during the time frame you mentioned, I would be certain to visit Baxter State Park (Baxter State Park – Welcome to a Magnificent Obsession.). It contains Mount Katahdin, which is the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, and the timing of your visit actually could feature decent fall foliage at that altitude (Maine Fall Foliage). The north woods of Maine is heavily timbered and wild; you might actually see moose up there.

Maine is awesome… I’ve only been to southern Maine but absolutely fantastic. The people incredibly nice different type of beach with a lot of cliffs but scenery is simply unbelievable

The Maine Dinner in Wells was our go to when we were stationed in Boston. Kennebunkport is a neat little town. LL Bean in Freeport. Drive up to Acadia National Park. Little bit north of Rockland. One of the most beautiful places in the country.

A nice day trip that would take you across southern Maine to Mount Washington (see The New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation : Mount Washington State Park), in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and back would require approximately 7 hours round trip. “On a clear day, views from the 6,288-foot summit extend beyond New Hampshire as far as 130 miles to Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, Quebec, and the Atlantic Ocean.” Mt. Washington is also rather unique among northeastern peaks in that it actually has a timberline, but it brews up some of the worst weather in the lower 48.

"The highest wind velocity ever measured on earth, 231 miles per hour, was clocked on the summit on April 12, 1934. Wind exceeds hurricane force (75 mph) over one hundred days a year. An average wind velocity of 35 mph, coupled with an average temperature of 27.1 F (-2.7C) makes for extreme wind chill conditions. Why is the weather so severe? In addition to its lofty elevation, Mount Washington lies in the path of both the major storm tracks and the air mass routes that affect the Northeast. The mountain’s topography and high elevation create an acceleration effect on the wind in much the same way a river’s velocity increases as it passes over a rapid."

If you go there, check the weather forecast in advance.
