Anyone ever been to Punta Cana in the Dominican? Looking for somewhere to go in the Caribbean because its a nice easy flight. Went to Belize recently and we loved it there, may do it again but I was looking for something different.

Not punta, but first time to Isla Mujeres during Christmas and we want to return. A unique island that’s nothing like Cancún. We want to go to Belize also. Where did you stay?

Did you go all over Belize or stay in one area? You can easily add a little time in Guatemala and visit Tikal.

We stayed in San Pedro, short flight over from Belize City. If we go back we'll probably stay on the mainland; Hopkins or Palancia probably.

You didn't ask me but I will chime in. Are you looking to relax or be active and explore? I really liked Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye when we were there in the early 90's, but I know Ambergris has changed quite a bit since then.

More recently we did a trip and stayed in two different areas of Belize and Guatemala. Placencia is a good place to relax and has good dive and snorkeling opportunities. The Mountain Pine Forest is cool; we went on a night walk in the jungle while staying there and that was pretty wild.

There are a couple of good Mayan ruins in Belize that are worth visiting, but if you can make it to Tikal, it is worth it. We went to Tikal and then stayed on Lake Petén Itzá in Guatemala for a couple of nights and it was awesome. But a few months after we were there, there was a shootout between drug cartels on the road outside that lasted a while.

PC is nice we stayed at Breathless in Dec. Great time, great people and great service. Food was so so.

When we went we stayed in Ambergis, but we made a few trips to the mainland and went to Guatemala once. Went to the Xunantunich Mayan ruins. Did cave tubbing that was really cool. Also spent a couple days on the beech doing nothing.

I don’t see how you can say that. Great restaurants great shopping great hotel like the pearl hotel just a wonderful place..

Shopping is never on my vacation agenda. And if vacationing on the gulf I avoid hotels so nothing appealing to me about Rosemary Beach.

There are some nice out of the way areas on the panhandle.

I'm sure there are, every time I've visited the panhandle it's been way to crowded and earned it's nickname, The Redneck Riviera. My wife is from St Pete so when we go to FL it's typically St Pete or further South.

If anyone's looking for cool tools to get cheap flights, I'd recommend Scott's Cheap Flights (Cheap International Flights – Scott’s Cheap Flights).

My wife and I flew to Cancun for around $150/each round trip, and down to Peru for less than $500/each round trip. Combine a cheap flight with AirBnB and you've got yourself a nice trip.

Our Cancun trip- one week- had a total cost of $1200-$1300, which is about what we would have spent on a trip to somewhere like Myrtle.

Speaking of Peru, I'd highly, HIGHLY recommend visiting and spending time in Lima, and if possible, Cusco. If anyone's headed there I'm happy to give some recommendations on things!

Every couple of years we rent a house on Anna Maria Island. I stay away from PCB and Destin areas like the plague is in town.

Saw that literally right after telling the wife that I was looking at Punta Cana. Waiting on her to tell me we won't be going there...might take her a few more days to see it.

You can get hookworm on almost any beach in the Caribbean, hell, even in your back yard and they rarely cause any serious issues.

I wouldn't let that dissuade you.

I know it can happen anywhere. Just figuring my wife will freak out about it.
