Vacation / Travel

Ms. Danl and I are traveling through Florida soon. Plan on doing the Keys, Everglades, Miami, St Augustine, Cape Canaveral, etc.
What's the scoop on Epcot? Is it worth doing? We aren't traveling with kids and don't really enjoy theme park thrill rides.
Any other suggested places in FL to visit?

TIA

Epcot is a good ide. Probably the most adult oriented theme park I can think of.

EPCOT is great. Bring your wallet with a few extra credit cards. Admission is between 100 and 115/person, I think. Buy your tickets a head of time and set up your fast passes, I'd call
1-407-W-DISNEY to do it. You want to ride soarin, test track, spaceship earth and mission to mars. The rest of the day check out the different countries. Canada, France, China, and the American adventure have great films. Mexico is a real cool pavilion and has a great bar called La Cava del Tequila, get a margarita, chips and dip for a snack. Typically I'd tell you to set up one dinning reservation, pick any food country you'd like, you can't go wrong. I'd suggest La Hacienda de San Angel. They have a few dinner entries that you two could split and it's plent of food. If you don't want to be tied down to a reservation walk around the countries and get one drink and an app from the quick services restaurants from a few different countries... that's really how food and wine started. Get there early, stay late if you can to watch illuminations. It starts at nine so find a good view of the lagoon around eight. EPCOT and Disney in general is really fun, it's packed on weekends so try to go during the week. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks, mdrew and all, for your help. We will definitely add EPCOT to our itinerary and take your suggestions. Good to get input from VN.

Ms. Danl and I are in the midst of our 60 For 60 Tour (we are going to 60 places in the US that we have never been to celebrate our 60th year) and will probably ask for VN's help again as we go along.

Not sure your budget but I'd recommend staying at a first class beach resort for a few nights. There are many and it depends on what you want nearby, golf, shopping, restaurants, etc. My wife and I like being away from the main crowds. On the Atlantic, we like Vero Beach Kimpton. On the Gulf, we like Don Cesar on St. Pete Beach.

60 years.... Amazing

Dont go on vacation on the cheap.. pay for the experience and enjoy it

Agreed! Save money when you're home. Vacations are for doing things you dont do at home. Our family rule is we eat out every night because its vacation since we eat at home virtually every night. We dont eat Ruth Chris but we eat well.Every night one of the kids is allowed to pick the restaurant. Only rule is it cannot be a place that we have at home (Fridays, OCharley's, etc....). They get to eat what they want off the menu. If its not your night you eat reasonable - chicken, sandwich, etc... Go Karts, rides, all the things we dont do at home.

Just got back from a leg of our tour. Drove from East Tennessee to Key West and started back north. Did the Keys, the Everglades, Kennedy Space Center, Epcot, St Augustine, the Okefeenokee, and the Big House Museum in Macon, Ga.

Had a blast! Saw lots of new stuff and met some cool people. And knocked about a half a dozen items off the list.

One small rant... we always try to learn something new on these trips. On this trip we learned that each and every driver licensed in the state of Florida is absolutely unable to manage a motor vehicle. I'm convinced that whatever part of the brain is responsible for driving is automatically and permanently turned to mush by the Florida DMV in the process of issuing a license. I kid you not. Absolutely. Each. And. Every.One.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but I have logged about 10 jillion miles driving all over this country, including lots of driving in LA, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, DC and billions of miles of interstates and dirt roads. I have never witnessed such an utterly horrible group of "drivers" in my life and Boston drivers set the previous bar pretty damned high.

Other than that, we really enjoyed ourselves.

Lol..imagine this..I drove a parts deliver route around Tampa Bay every day. It was hell.

Just booked a cabin in Gatlinburg for next weekend, it's the wife's birthday. I know it's fairly cliche but we have never been to Gatlinburg other then a day trip in college. Recommendations for food and activities appreciated.
