Herd immunity should’ve never been applied to this disease. I even fell for it at first. Because since it has several non-human reservoirs, there’s no amount of human immunization that can eradicate the disease.

The real issue is that the virus mutates so easily that there are constantly new "variants," many of which have been unique enough that antibodies generated by mRNA shots or prior infections do not recognize or neutralize them. This shouldn't really have surprised anyone, as the same is the case for many other common respiratory viruses.

The good news is that as the engineered virus has mutated, it has moved to a less aggressive, more "natural" coronavirus. Still very (more?) contagious, but without most of the risk that it had to frail/elderly people in the beginning.
