Virginia isn't as bad as people think

I am spotting the Cavs 13 points. A TD drive and two drives for field goals. This game to me, is really all about our Defense. Joe and company are gonna score points as the O has many, many weapons to select from. If we give up over 21 points though, we might need to find a way to bolster our Defense quickly.

We’re pretty bad…the offense was offensive. From that offense, we lost our best 3 receivers and QB (who was 4th in passing yards in the country the year before). Des Kitchings (New OC) is a football terrorist, but I digress.

From our improved but mediocre defense last year, we lost BY FAR our best 2 players in Nick Jackson and Fentrell Cypress.

We are starting a Monmouth transfer at QB. Our OL is terrible.

We have one good unit on this team (DT’s).

We are the third worst team on your schedule behind AP and UCONN.

TOP STORYLINES• Virginia returns to the field for the first time in 294 days. Its 2022 season was cut short after tragedy claimed the lives of Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry. The Cavaliers canceled their final two games of the year.• The Cavaliers defense was the strong point of the 2022 squad, improving its scoring defense by over a full touchdown (7.8 points) from the 2021 season. Only 11 teams in FBS had a better defensive improvement from the 2021 season. • Virginia returns eight starters on the defensive side of the ball, including its entire defensive line. The Cavaliers averaged 3.0 sacks per game, the 12th highest average in the country.• UVA will need to replace nearly 80 percent of its total offense from a year ago, including the program’s all-time leading passer, Brennan Armstrong. The Cavaliers return three starters on offense and have bolstered the offensive side of the ball with transfers QB Tony Muskett (Monmouth) WR Malik Washington (Northwestern) and OL Brian Stevens (Dayton) who have a combined 61 collegiate starts to their credit.• The Cavaliers return to Nashville for the first time since the 2017 season. UVA moved its regular season contest against Ohio to Vanderbilt Stadium to avoid Hurricane Florence. Nissan Stadium is the fourth NFL Stadium UVA has played in since 2018 (Miami, Pittsburgh, Charlotte)

The only people who shouldn't overlook the opponent are the players and coaches.

I am expecting a win. Would I like it to be smooth and easy? Sure. But if it hard fought and close, I will take the win and be happy.
If we don’t absolutely blow the brakes off of them I’m not going to freak out. Pitt was quite average last year after a good season the year before and we had a very mediocre game against them (I live in Pittsburgh, Pitt fans were hanging their hat on our close game against them). We had an amazing season after that very meh performance that was fortunately a win.

Exactly, I don’t sweat the first game when you have a coaching staff that is good at development

They were not average, they still had one of the best defensive lines in the country and finished 9-4.

This will be the first live bullets for 2 of our most questioned UNITS, the OL and DB's. A few untimely busts at the LOS can stop some drives and impact the score. Likewise a couple of busts in coverage can end up with some easy points for UVA. Sometimes the sum of the individuals, where we should be superior at most of the positions, does not translate to unblemished execution. So I will not get too tied up on final score IF IF IF we trip over our feet during the first game of the year. Probably won't have a high tolerance for wailing and moaning by any poster upset because we did not meet their expectations if early errors and a few bounces and calls keep it tighter than the betting lines.

Yes, we should win comfortably, but I think we're all kind of sitting on the idea that this will be an easy blow out, like an Austin Peay type game, and that's not going to be the case. A few things to note:

-On paper they won 3 games last year, but they were likely going to win the last 2 that were cancelled, so they are a 5-7 team basically.

-They lost to UNC by 3, and lost to Miami in OT.

-Those two facts put together mean they were a few breaks away from having a winning record last year.

-A theory proven by Heupel (as well as Saban, and Kirby), the biggest jump is typically made between year 1 and year 2.

Again, it should be a comfortable win, but this isn't an FCS school and they aren't going to play like one. We should all have a fun, nervous excitement for this one.

And surely we learned from South Carolina last year to never underestimate anyone. No matter how piss poor they have been leading up to our game.
Okay after reading this you have absolutely zero knowledge about Virginia football. two likely wins at the end of their schedule?
They were likely to bear Virginia Tech? Who they have beaten once since 2003? Beat Coastal? Coastal has been a double digit win top 25 team for years now. Where have you been?

They would have remained a 3 win team.

Here's where they are WORSE than you think

Tony Elliot took the 21st offense to the 126th somehow while brining back one of the best QB's in UVA history and his top 4 WR's! Armstrong went from 4,400 pass yds, 31 td's 10 int's to 2,100 yds 7 td's 12 int's lolol Now Armstrong is gone, his receivers are gone and they have a guy who was above average at Monmouth who has only played against one FBS team (MTSU) and a crowd no bigger than 15,000 people. Four new o-line starters.

That offense is walking into a sold out all vol 60,000+ Nissan stadium, after having not played a game since mid November, against a defense littered with SEC upperclassmen. Literally every starter is a 4th to 6th year senior.

As for their defense, it was 44th and they lost their two corners and now their best pass rusher is out for the game.

The only way they don't get bludgeoned is if some totally unforseen stuff happens and font think Heup doesn't remind them of the USC jr game everyday.

I think their defense can maybe get some stops early, but offensively unless they can surprise us with some new wrinkles, they can't line up and win any one on one battle.

Has blowout written all over it

No they are worse than we should think. We may actually double the spread!

If we don’t take it easy on peay we should win 90 something to zero.

Virginia is not a good team. We will win by 30+ and the whole game won’t be that close.
