Virginia isn't as bad as people think

I could see UT having some trouble early on moving the ball for a series or two against UVAs d line. Perhaps a couple 3 n outs. Other than that, UVA would have to improve dramatically with every single unit of their football team from 2022-2023 for the game to even be competitive. Their starting QB from last season left and went to NC State. UVA replaced him with a FCS transfer from Monmouth. Best win was against a lousy GA Tech team while the worst loss they suffered was a 30 point beatdown at the hands of PITT.

That's probably going to happen regardless. Very rarely are teams clicking offensively in the 1st game, especially early on. I could see it being a 10-14 pt game at Halftime. Think we pull away later in the game similar to the way we did in the Mizzou game last season.

Know things are different but wasn’t Georgia St was about a 28 point dog?

Yep. And won.

Something that UVA will not...ever...be able to claim against UT.

But thanks for stopping by. We can now add another notch to our running count of non-Vol fans who showed up to display their total ignorance.

At VN, your vote always counts.

Go Vols.

Yes, we should win comfortably, but I think we're all kind of sitting on the idea that this will be an easy blow out, like an Austin Peay type game, and that's not going to be the case. A few things to note:

-On paper they won 3 games last year, but they were likely going to win the last 2 that were cancelled, so they are a 5-7 team basically.

-They lost to UNC by 3, and lost to Miami in OT.

-Those two facts put together mean they were a few breaks away from having a winning record last year.

-A theory proven by Heupel (as well as Saban, and Kirby), the biggest jump is typically made between year 1 and year 2.

Again, it should be a comfortable win, but this isn't an FCS school and they aren't going to play like one. We should all have a fun, nervous excitement for this one.

And surely we learned from South Carolina last year to never underestimate anyone. No matter how piss poor they have been leading up to our game.
They lost their top 4 WR, 4 of 5 OL, QB and leading rusher; off a team that won 3 games. Yes, they’re bad.

I think Virginia is better than what they are getting credit for, but I also think that we are a really bad matchup for them and they could be running into a buzzsaw.

UVA's defense is pretty decent and could stall us more than we anticipate, especially if our OLine is susceptible. But UVA's offense is so abysmal, with our improved defense they wont be able to keep up.

I expect us to win and the final score will look fine. But not an overwhelming beatdown and it may take longer than expected to really separate. Maybe something like 45 - 17.

I mean anything can happen, but we are 28 point favorites for a reason. Their roster is bad by any D1 standard you want to use and I don't think Tony Elliot is even an average coach.

I respect your opinion but disagree.

I have this game 59-10, Vols.

Even if not that extreme, it’s still a lopsided Vols win. I think last year’s USCe taught Heup and this team some lessons about “underestimating an opponent.” UVA is not a talented team, and I think Joe and the Vols come out feeling like they need to make a statement.

I expect it to pour on early and often and we see backups early as well.

Does anyone remember the 1980 game and how we were so sure it would be a cakewalk? The Hoos had no chance, until the game started. That was miserable to endure.
I think we'll win handily, but they play the games for a reason.

They scored 6 points against Florida the week before.

6.....
Are you really serious and truly believe that we are coming up against an unstoppable, frightening, dynasty level team or are you just trolling the sufferers of BVS? This is reaching the level of absurdity. On paper, and that is all there is to go on at the moment, this contest isn't even close. As for Georgia State.....CJH ain't Cornbread aight!

We're going to beat the brakes off of them. The only reason we don't cover is that we get a comfortable lead and put a lot of young guys in to get game experience.

I didn't say anything about Georgia State. And no, I don't think we're going up against a good team at all.

What I do think is that we're not going up against an FCS team, but I think that's what everyone expects.

The point I was making that you replied to is that South Carolina was atrocious when we played them, and we all know how that turned out.

I do remember that game, and that entire season. We were coming off two embarrassing losses to Pitt and Bama, but most fans assumed we would run the table for the rest of the year. We had a bit of a false sense of that team’s capabilities, because all four of our losses to that point had come against highly-ranked teams, and we had shut out what we thought was a pretty good Auburn squad (they weren’t; they ended up 5-6, and 0-6 in league play).

But the truth is that 1980 team just wasn’t very good, and we had no business thinking they would have an easy go against anyone (except Kentucky and Vandy, of course).

First game jitters usually make these games closer than if played later. I'll be watching for an improved and consistent Joe and a stingey D. And no major injuries going into Gatorville in 2.

They were a 6-6 level SEC team before we played them, something UVA is far from. UVA is a 3 win ACC team lol

USCjr was almost equally as talented and UVA is nowhere near and Rattler was a former Heisman candidate.

They also completely changed their offensive philosophy that took us completely off guard. Perfect storm with the Banks stuff going on.

This type of logic is severely flawed and full of contradiction.

It took overtime for UT to beat Pitt and they only beat Alabama by 3. UT is not as good as everyone thinks they are.

"On paper..." geez.

I remember that season very well too. We weren't great but we weren't terrible except for the UVa game. We had that one point loss to national champ UGa, the last minute field goal loss to USC with Marcus Allen, then the two bad losses to Pitt and Bama. I saw them all.
UVa was a doormat. VPI beat them 30-0. We knew we were mediocre and still had a reasonable expectation, like today, to beat them like a drum.

We were definitely better than they were, no doubt, just not good enough to have the level of confidence we had going into that game. You’re right: very few Tennessee fans viewed that game as losable until it was lost.

I believe this team is far better than our ‘80 team, though, and there’s a possibility that this Virginia team (relatively speaking) is worse than their ‘80 team. We’ll see how it plays out in a couple of days.
