I could see UT having some trouble early on moving the ball for a series or two against UVAs d line. Perhaps a couple 3 n outs. Other than that, UVA would have to improve dramatically with every single unit of their football team from 2022-2023 for the game to even be competitive. Their starting QB from last season left and went to NC State. UVA replaced him with a FCS transfer from Monmouth. Best win was against a lousy GA Tech team while the worst loss they suffered was a 30 point beatdown at the hands of PITT.
Know things are different but wasn’t Georgia St was about a 28 point dog?
They lost their top 4 WR, 4 of 5 OL, QB and leading rusher; off a team that won 3 games. Yes, they’re bad.Yes, we should win comfortably, but I think we're all kind of sitting on the idea that this will be an easy blow out, like an Austin Peay type game, and that's not going to be the case. A few things to note:
-On paper they won 3 games last year, but they were likely going to win the last 2 that were cancelled, so they are a 5-7 team basically.
-They lost to UNC by 3, and lost to Miami in OT.
-Those two facts put together mean they were a few breaks away from having a winning record last year.
-A theory proven by Heupel (as well as Saban, and Kirby), the biggest jump is typically made between year 1 and year 2.
Again, it should be a comfortable win, but this isn't an FCS school and they aren't going to play like one. We should all have a fun, nervous excitement for this one.
And surely we learned from South Carolina last year to never underestimate anyone. No matter how piss poor they have been leading up to our game.

Are you really serious and truly believe that we are coming up against an unstoppable, frightening, dynasty level team or are you just trolling the sufferers of BVS? This is reaching the level of absurdity. On paper, and that is all there is to go on at the moment, this contest isn't even close. As for Georgia State.....CJH ain't Cornbread aight! They scored 6 points against Florida the week before.
6.....

I do remember that game, and that entire season. We were coming off two embarrassing losses to Pitt and Bama, but most fans assumed we would run the table for the rest of the year. We had a bit of a false sense of that team’s capabilities, because all four of our losses to that point had come against highly-ranked teams, and we had shut out what we thought was a pretty good Auburn squad (they weren’t; they ended up 5-6, and 0-6 in league play).Does anyone remember the 1980 game and how we were so sure it would be a cakewalk? The Hoos had no chance, until the game started. That was miserable to endure.
I think we'll win handily, but they play the games for a reason.
They were a 6-6 level SEC team before we played them, something UVA is far from. UVA is a 3 win ACC team lolI didn't say anything about Georgia State. And no, I don't think we're going up against a good team at all.
What I do think is that we're not going up against an FCS team, but I think that's what everyone expects.
The point I was making that you replied to is that South Carolina was atrocious when we played them, and we all know how that turned out.
I remember that season very well too. We weren't great but we weren't terrible except for the UVa game. We had that one point loss to national champ UGa, the last minute field goal loss to USC with Marcus Allen, then the two bad losses to Pitt and Bama. But the truth is that 1980 team just wasn’t very good, and we had no business thinking they would have an easy go against anyone (except Kentucky and Vandy, of course).
We were definitely better than they were, no doubt, just not good enough to have the level of confidence we had going into that game. You’re right: very few Tennessee fans viewed that game as losable until it was lost.I remember that season very well too. We weren't great but we weren't terrible except for the UVa game. UVa was a doormat. VPI beat them 30-0. We knew we were mediocre and still had a reasonable expectation, like today, to beat them like a drum.
