The flowers were Daisies, white petals, orange centers !!! N since when do we let the kids run the program here ? They know we r The Big Orange b 4 they put their name on the paper. Here Tradition does mean something, unlike some schools that have thrown it out the door, they probably have no idea what their school's colors are really suppose to be. We did have orange band uniforms, wish we still did, they were so hard to keep clean, they were at the dry cleaners lots. We should never give up our Tradition for anyone putting on a jersey to play here. Go Big Orange 4 evr

Most if not all teams wore black back then. It was 21' when they first wore the orange jerseys.

go to the 09:35 mark...

100 Years of Volunteers 1

100 Years of Volunteers 1 - YouTube

Thanks for the additional information. 100 Years of Volunteers is certainly an authoritative reference, but even here we have conflicting data from multiple sources. This document ( TNJN - Tennessee football uniform history ), published by the University of Tennessee School of Journalism and Electronic Media, indicates that "In 1927 the Vols decided to correspond more with the school's colors of orange and white and wore the first orange jerseys, and have been wearing them ever since." Perhaps, that statement simply reflects an official declaration of policy, one that validated several prior years of the usage of orange jerseys.

On the other hand, UT's Athletics Department's website (UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Fans ) states that "Tennessee football players did not wear orange jerseys until the season-opening game in 1922. Coach M.B. Banks' Vols won that game over Emory and Henry by a score of 50-0." Finally, this mural (University of Tennessee Volunteers Football Uniform and Team History | Heritage Uniforms and Jerseys ) depicts an orange jersey with white rectangular panels attributed to 1925.

It is probably safe to say that orange jerseys have been consistently worn since no later than 1927 and were worn, without official sanction, for several years prior to that. In any event, this pushes the span in which orange jerseys have been part of Tennessee's football uniform back to no less than 85 years, and perhaps as much as 91. That definitely qualifies as longstanding, deeply entrenched tradition.

I agree. They have trimmed the numerals on the road jerseys in BLACK. Look around Neyland Stadium, see all the BLACK incorporated into the signs.

But I don't want to ruffle the traditionalists sensitive little feelings in this matter. I will play along, Tennessee's colors are orange and white. So if Tennessee does not use BLACK as a color, then they need to get rid of it. Call the pride of the southland band, and burn the band uniforms, because they are mostly black. Oh but that would be ugly, wouldn't it?

It is interesting to note that Orange and White were chosen as the schools colors, because it was the same color as the flowers that grow on the hill. The flowers is known as pansies. Hmmmm. With the way the team has been playing over the past 5 years, are we sure we want the guys to dress up like pansies? Personally, I am beginning to think that a little black wouldn't be such a bad thing.

First, trimmed in black makes it easier for radio/tv announcers to read the numbers. Second, the Pride's uniforms are orange, cream, and navy, not black. Third, I believe that there are rules and such dictated by the university that require anything with the Tennessee brand be dominated by the school colors with acceptable accent colors. Lastly, I've been saying for years it'd be nice to have a thin black trim along the numbers of the home uniforms.

I'm biased, but I think Md has the best looking flag is the US, and it translated into a pretty cool uni. (although i can understand it's not for everyone)
My daughter, a sophmore at UMd just bought a bikini top like the Terp uni

The Maryland state flag reminds me of back in elementary school social studies classes, where you had to draw a state flag or a state map. No one wanted to do Maryland, either the flag OR the map.

An even more specious counterargument. One game out of 944 played between 1927 and 2011. Incidentally, our record for that entire period is fourth best nationally in winning pct. (.71239) and second best in wins (656). See I-A Winning Percentage 1927-2011 . As for the period when we consistently wore black jerseys (1911-1920), we were 42nd in winning pct. (.67143). See I-A Winning Percentage 1911-1920 . Now, I am not about to contend that there is a statistical correlation, let alone a causal relationship associated with wearing specific uniform combinations. In the parlance of the younger and often far too casual generation, just sayin.

But, when wearing black in that same timeframe we have a 1.000 winning percentage. Not saying there is a correlation, but I'm just throwing it out there.

Fact: It is impossible to score a touchdown while wearing a black jersey in Neyland. If you think any color other than orange should be worn, you must hate the vawls and all things Tennessee.

not at all. The main reason I do not oppose black highlights in the Tennessee uniforms is because it give contrast with the white, and the pale orange which are both on the bright end of the color spectrum.

want to know one of the main reasons they went with the orange an white? When games began to be televised, someone at Tennessee noted opponents claims that it was impossible to read the players numbers on black and white game film, and wanted to take every advantage of that.

Personally, I would have thought better of Tennessee had they said, OK, let's make the numbers clearly readable, and let's still kick their butts.

No-way...no-how a Black Jersy should be considered. I am in the idea of Black Pants w/Orange/White Checkerboard and Black Helmets w/Orange T. Only Orange & White Jerseys period.

When UT goes orange and black they will loose their identity. Look at our record since we tried black jerseys.

There is not a better trademark for UT athletics than Tennessee Orange and White. When fans across the nation see that color and that power T on the helmet there is no question who is on the field. The same with Auburn and Alabama's traditional looks. Teams without a national identity have to push fads to create a trademark.

Alabama, Auburn, or LSU are having no difficulty attracting the nation's best talent with their traditions. To suggest that UT experiment with our tradition is to suggest that we are a lesser program and have to try such gimmicks to attract talent and publicity.

As I said, look at our record since we tried black jerseys. How did that work out for you?

This is idiotic.

We lost wearing orange and white. Not black.

Also Alabama and LSU wear alternate jerseys. Bama has a pro combat by Nike.

Please don't post dumb crap on here.

Uh, we are 1-0 wearing them

Our uniforms are the awesomest... If you live in 1985. It's time for a change. The players want it and deserve it, the fans (the ones born after 1960) want it and deserve it.

Deserve it? how is the hell do the fans deserve it? have they bled for the orange and white? the fans don't "deserve" anything. They aren't entitled to anything. The program is bigger than any person. And that is what is most important.
