Vols in Summer Leagues Across Continent

6/20 Wrap up...

The Vols got off to a slow start this evening...It didn't look like it was gonna be much of a night. The feeds were in and out, seems like such a simple thing, but it really does make things harder than it needs to be. Houser and Lance stats have been provided, but I need to check them tomorrow, but that's the gist of it. VJax got pulled with no outs and runners on 1 and 2, made me sad. Robbie Kidd had a rough night, again those stats are in the thread. So, what's not?

Trevor Charpie came into the game in the top of the 9th with quite the security blanket, the Big Train leading 11-1. He gave up 3 hits, 4 runs, 2 earned, hit a batter and got no K's. The Big Train won 11-5.

Between the SLO Blues and the Conejo Oaks the Vols have 5 players, none got a start and just as I was about to give up...Owenby came into the game in the 8th for the Blues who had an 11-6 lead. Check this OUT! He pitched 2 innings, gave up no hits, no runs, no walks and....STRUCK OUT 6!

The Matsu Miners went into extra innings for the second night in a row. Before I get to the Miners, I want to tell you about Jeff Moberg. I was listening to Moberg's Glacier Pilots and watching the Matsu Miners at the same time, TRY that some time. Moberg's game was a 0-0 tie after four and he struck out and flew out his first two at bats. Moby ended up going 3 for 5, with a run and a single and he made 4 great assists and stole a base. The Pilots won 5-0.

As for the Miners, it was a one to nothing game in favor of the Miners until the 7th inning. Then it got tied up 1-1, and while the pitching for the Miners (sorry, no Vols tonight) is really to be praised, Simcox rose to the occasion. He went 3 for 5 including a lead off single in the 11th, and he scored the winning run. On the down side Christin Stewart went 0/4, but the Miners win 2-1 in extra innings!

Maddox didn't not get the start tonight, he's with USA Baseball, so wanted to correct that and thanks to BaseVol, who pointed it out. Guess I'll go see who who won the NBA Finals now. GBO!

Forgot to mention, in the wrap up, another pitcher who got a start last night in the second game of a double header. It's easy to see why. Andy Cox with the Saratoga Brigade went 2.1 innings, gave up no hits, 3 runs all earned, he walked 5 and struck out 2. I wanted to make sure I got his line right because of an error that occurred. The Brigade ended up winning the game 7-6.

I won't be around from about 6-9 PM, so there won't be a lot of updates, but I'll get caught up when I get back and let folks know who got starts and how they did.

Quillen , Saberhagen and Serrano are really the only pitchers I'd expect to see for the rest of the weekend, though Charpie might get some more work. I might be forgetting someone, but most of the guys have pitched in the last 2 days.

If there are families or friends of players lurking that might be able to give us a heads up on when a guy is gonna get a start, that info would be greatly appreciated.

The Glacier Pilots have their "Solstice Showdown" tomorrow. It starts at 2 AM EST, can't wait! :p

Some of the returnees better step up their games this summer and show marked improvement before the fall workouts begin. There are a couple of JUCO pitchers, who along with Serrano will be pushing for their innings on the mound. Also, the JUCO outfielder, Strickland, and Senzel come in with the talent to start right away.

Competition at practice will be a lot tougher this year.

I agree. I didn't realize how important the summer league games are. We have 26 guys playing summer ball right now and we have 14 signees, 15 counting Senzel...it's simple math. We're talking around 10 players or so I believe, that won't be back. Does that square with the way you see it BK?

I know you weren't asking me, but I'll chime in on this anyway.

I won't even check your estimate of 10 because you know this team better than me, for sure. I just wonder how many from the group of new signees (as opposed to returning players) we might expect to drop off between now and the final roster, for various reasons?

Johnathon Youngblood got replaced after going 0/2.

Heath Loyd went 1 for 3, 1 SO. Don't see this stat line very often...monarchs with 9 hits, no runs...beaten by a team that got 4 runs, 2-0.

Probable starter for the KF Gems is NOT Quillen

Can not find a link for the Blues game tonight.

Well I'll be...Dalton Saberhagen has pitched the best game I've ever seen him have. Through 6, that's right, 6 Innings and nearing 100 pitches...he's given up 7 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, walked 2 and K'd 5. His Oaks lead 5-2...can't imagine he'll go any longer, we'll see. Great job by Dalton!

I wasn't just asking BK, just being conversational.:p

The bulk of the signees are pitchers, nine of them. We have 13 pitchers on the roster, not counting VJax, and I wouldn't count on Lee, not saying he won't. Of those 13 pitchers, counting Lee, 10 of them are right handed, all 9of the signees are RHP. I don't know much, but it would seem something has to give there. :)

Then there are a few players who seem to be a little lost in the shuffle, not gonna name names at this point, but there are clearly a few players that aren't showing up in summer ball like the others. There could be many reasons for this, so it's not worth speculating on. I don't think there will be a lot of incoming players that don't stay on, we'll see.

Dalton's such a great kid, I root for him as much as anyone. He's a kid I'd love to see make a big contribution to the pitching staff next year.

I root for him too. I have to admit, I get a little pit in my stomach when he takes the hill. Also, is it just me, or does it seem like he and CDS have, what's the word...a bit of a strained relationship. That's the feeling that I get based on nothing really.

' bout time for AJ and Stewie to get it goin' in the rubber match with Oilers, 2 extra inning games so far, should be a good one!

They definitely have to get down to 35 by the spring. With 26 playing summer ball, how many are not playing. I know Nick Williams is not playing, are there others?

There were a few pitchers who never mastered the strike zone last spring and their innings decreased as the year went on. Some of them better figure out how to get ahead of hitters and pitch to contact.

There were also a few position players (one in particular) whose attitude got him in the doghouse during the season. As the roster gets deeper, there will probably be very little patience for this.

Also, the players better show up in the fall in shape and able to meet the standards set by the coaches. Everyone knows what these standards are and it would not be a good idea to miss these marks.

As for summer ball, Vance Vizcaino doesn't seem to be playing, and a couple that are supposed to be on rosters are not...and they should be by now.

6/21 Wrap Up.

SIMCOX IS A STUD. I posted the link, if you didn't watch, it's on you. I'll do the rest tomorrow. Kudos to Saberhagen. GBO!

Several smashed on A.J. when he struggled early in the season...as if freshman don't struggle. Be interesting to come back in two years and read some of the comments.:whistling:

Welp, I had written a long gushing review of AJ's performance in last nights game. With the click of the wrong button, it is gone, and I don't feel like running down each of his at bats all over again.

So, here's the gist. He went 2 for 3. He walked twice. He drove in a run, on a perfectly executed 2 out suicide squeeze. He stole 2 bases. He scored 2 runs and had an RBI. He played superb defense with several diving plays that surely would have resulted in a run or two for the opposition. He's playing big boy ball in a big boy league and right now he's THE MAN. I'll link his season stats below but I do want to mention one that may get over looked...In 28 at bats, he has yet to be struck out. NOT ONCE! As RichRollin' pointed out, many wanted him to take a seat, and I admit, even I was tired of the errors. As RR pointed out, that's to be expected of a young player but he's grown up fast, just wish more people were getting to see it. Remarkable!

Past AJ's line, Jeff Moberg sitting at 4th in the league, he's doing great, he plays tonight, uh...2 AM, technically tomorrow...you know what I mean.

So that's the good news....

Because, there weren't a lot of Vols in action last night, I had some time to check on a few players.

Scott Price started off playing quite a bit, 5 games, 5 starts. Since then he hasn't played at all. Compared to his teammate for the Blowfish, David Houser 15 games and 14 starts, I'm a little worried about Price. I'm not trying to make something a big deal here, there are many plausible explanations, for whatever reason, he hasn't been in the line up in a while, that is all.

Where is Aaron Quillen? He's s'posed to be on the roster for the Klamath Fall Gems. I've been trying to watch him for a couple weeks. Last night I wrote that he was not getting a start, A-G-A-I-N. I tried to look up his stats, nothing. Then I looked at the roster and his name is not on it. Again, not trying to blow this out of proportion, I'm sure there's some sort of explanation, but I've wasted a little time everyday trying to watch him pitch.

Same with Michael Parrish, no stats and not on the roster for the Cincinnati Steam.

Michael Flax IS on the roster for the Dodge City A's, he's had 3 at bats, is average is .000. Of course, because the A's stats page on it's website doesn't actually have any stats, I went to the league, so it could be inaccurate, but when I say "I'm Trying to watch" I mean...I'm looking everyday.

GBO!

Derek Lance gets the start at 3rd, batting in the 7 spot, for the Steam. Only Vol starting for either team in the first game of a DH.

Lance with a single in his first at bat.

Lance with another single and and RBI! Nice, 2/2

Lance K'd...2/3

That's it for game one, will see if he gets a start in game 2.

Lance will get another start in the second game, this time at the other corner, 1st base and he's batting 9th.

Missed his 1st at bat

Went down looking in his 2nd attempt

Somebody wants to stay in the CCL, Taylor Smart with a 2 run homerun!!!

Smart goes down swinging in his 3rd at bat.

Smart grounds out to 3rd in his fourth attempt.
