Welp, Quillen not having any stats, not even a name on the roster was a little troublesome to me because he was one of the better young pitchers. Mystery solved. He's got some pictures of his eye around June 1 on his twitter page that look pretty bad.

He does fly out to Klamath Oregon because he tweets about how boring it is a couple times. Then on June 5th he tweeted he was flying back to Kingsport. Explains why he was listed to play for the Gems and why he's not on the roster. He said he had some small fractures, hope he's okay now.

Smart getting the start at 2B, and leading off for the Sox.

Smart flies out to CF.

Flies out to LF.

Takes care of the bored RFielder w/ his 3rd at bat.

Flies out to RF.

Grounds out 5-3

Smart goes 0/5, had some comp. issues so didn't get to watch all of it, made a couple nice plays in the field. His Sox win 9-1.

6/24 wrap up.

Not many Vols in action, not many teams in action. Kudos tonight go to Jason Manis. His stat line of 2 for 6 with 4 RBI's doesn't really do him justice. He actually got on base 4 out of 6 times. He played well behind the plate and it was a real pleasure to take the time to see him play, my first this summer.

Parker Wormsley had a good night as well, while Smart had a really tough night at the plate in the Cape Cod League. Lee had an ok night too.

VN News started this thread and I've tried to keep it on track.

Bruin, I respect your baseball acumen. If you watched the NBA finals, GREAT. If you are watching MSU at the CWS, AWESOME! If you watch Duck Dynasty, or Ice Road Truckers, more POWER to ya.

Not directed at anyone...I choose to watch the VOLS play. Though they may be Miners, Dawgs or Red Sox at this moment, I prefer THAT! over watching some other SEC school play baseball, or a bunch of millionaire cry babies in the NBA finals. To each his/her own.

I've never been a homer or a sheep...this is not just a "where are they now, hope they are doing well" proposition for me. This is a fact finding mission on what is wrong with our fan base, and what is wrong with the system we put these kids into, what is wrong with those in charge of covering baseball at the University of Tennessee, none of which is on topic with this particular thread. It WILL have a thread, just not this one which is reserved for our UT players, playing baseball across the continent.

Let's not opine why we don't have the fans they do in Starkville, let's actually get people interested by not going away, by showing UT that we do care, that we'll do the job they won't if we have to. Again, not directed at anyone, If you think Vandy is doing it better, or UGA is gonna get on track faster, that's great. I don't know what good it does, but great. Again not directed at anyone.

I went to the first baseball banquet under Serrano...Did you? Not directed at anyone. I sat at a table with some players and parents, none to shy to say what was going on under Raleigh, did you? (not directed at anyone) None of those players are here now. I'm passed it , are you? (not directed at anyone) Time to quit whining, it's time to show our support, however we can. That's it. (not directed at anyone)

Updated pitching stats.

Bettencourt - 12 IP - 4 H - 2 R - 1 ER - 7 BB - 8 SO - 1-0 - 0.75 ERA

Saberhagen - 27 IP - 32 H - 11 R - 9 ER - 7 BB - 21 SO - 3-0 - 3.00 ERA

Owenby - 8.67 IP - 4 H - 3 R - 1 ER - 5 BB - 20 SO - 0-1, 4 SV - 1.04 ERA

Charpie - 4.2 IP - 4 H - 4 R - 1 ER - 1 BB - 4 SO - 0-0, 3 SV - 1.92 ERA

Kidd - 3.1 IP - 4 H - 11 R - 10 ER - 11 BB - 4 SO - 27.00 ERA

Martin - 16.1 IP - 20 H - 9 R - 5 ER - 5 BB - 10 SO - 2.75 ERA

Cox - 6.2 IP - 9 H - 11 R - 10 ER - 6 BB - 4 SO - 0-1 - 13.50 ERA

Esparza - 19.1 IP - 16 H - 10 R - 8 ER - 8 BB - 19 SO - 3.72 ERA

Of the pitchers listed above, I thought Bettencourt, Owenby, and Charpie showed the most promise. At least they have D1 potential.

Also think Quillen was thrown in way over his head but he did an admirable job. He never got discouraged and never quit competing. He has a plus curveball but needs to get stronger (more velo) and better develop the change up. But, he has the mental make up to contribute.

*Cox was s'posed to pitch yesterday but the game was rained out.

* 'bout time for another Esparza start, today or tomorrow is my guess.

* bit of confusion on the LA Brewers game, both teams have it set for different times, going with the home team site above and the earlier time.

* with 7 games set to start from 7 to 8:05, it will be a bit of chaos trying to determine who is and isn't playing, might take longer than usual.

GBO!

I agree with that and only add that Esparza has shown some toughness in the summer leagues that I don't remember him showing during the season. I don't know about all the technical stuff, he's been throwing in the low to mid 80's I think.

Here's a little write up on that 23 inning game between the Steam and Monarchs.

Steam split doubleheader, fall in 23 innings to Monarchs

In one of the most memorable doubleheaders in team history, the Cincinnati Steam won a seven-inning opener over the Lake Erie Monarchs 7-6 before losing the nightcap, the longest game in franchise history in both innings (23) and time (6 hours, 16 minutes) 7-4, Saturday, at Arch McCartney Stadium.

The Steam responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Williams and Derek Lance (Tennessee) had RBI singles and Colin Hawk (Cincinnati) scored on a throwing error. Cincinnati scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
