Vols in Summer Leagues Across Continent

Jeff Moberg had the chance to be a hero. In a 2-2 game, bottom of the 9th, with 2 outs and nobody on....he grounds out...so X-tra innings for me, YEAH!

7/2 Wrap Up, 4th of July Edition!

Happy 4th to everyone, this is it for me until Sunday or Monday, depending on how long we last.

Kudos to Heath Loyd, he had a great game today. VJax did well and Stew and AJ got the monkey off their back today, beating the Bucs for the first time this season. It's a big deal.

Then there is Matt Esparza. In the fury that was the Coach Mo left thread, I missed Esparza's start tonight. That Sux because he did this:

7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 SO...The Bullfrogs won 10-1.

Moberg just led off w/ a stand up DBL in the Bot. 12th, but they couldn't get him in, game tied still at 3-3, 3 AM.

Two years ago, or there about, there was a massive debate regarding who should replace Raleigh. I supported Serrano then, I do now...but part of throwing your support behind a candidate is to...you know... support him. I'm not blindly going to do it, but I am here. As Showme, said, Coach Mo leaving is not a crisis, it is what it is.

It's a bump in the road and if we get the right person we may be better off. The proof is in the pudding. So far, my candidate is 16 - 44 in SEC play. I can either bail out or push on hoping the progress I see in some of these young guys will pay off. Rest assured, I'll be here whatever the result, celebrate if we get to there, or eat my crow.

Hope you all have a great 4th!

Moberg with a 2 out single, bottom of 14....DBL! Moberg on 3rd!...Top 15, still tied 3-3....Good night VN. :clapping:

They were not done scoring in the inning as Chrsitin Stewart hit a two-run single for his 22nd and 23rd RBI of the year and gave his team a 3-1 lead.

“I’m in a spot where I’m suppose to bring people in and I just try to do my job every time I go up to the plate,” Stewart said. “ just try to move them, score them, do whatever I have to do.”

Andrew Lee has been playing 1st base for the Blues all season, but some pitching stats have shown up for him as well.

2 G, 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 SO, .000 ERA

Martin makes history as Steam shut out Joes 7-0

CINCINNATI – Eric Martin (Tennessee/Turpin) pitched the first complete-game shutout in Cincinnati Steam history Friday night, leading the Steam to a 7-0 win over the Hamilton Joes at Arch McCartney Stadium.

Martin (1-0) struck out 10 Joes, allowing just three hits and two walks while his teammates gave him ample run support. Hamilton starter Ryan Atkinson (0-3) was a recipient of the brunt of the Steam’s bats, giving up three runs on seven hits and taking the loss.

Andy Cox is done for the Saratoga Brigade, got mono, out for 6 weeks.

Davis Aiken done for the SLO Blues.

Kind of hope that he had mono all summer long and they are just now diagnosing it. Would at least help explain his struggles this summer

Yeah, it's pretty weird. His first start on June 14th was pretty bad, then he came on for 2 innings of relief work June 20th. He didn't pitch again until July 5th, which was by far his best work and now, 3 days later he's got mono and is out for 6 weeks.

He only pitched 10 innings, so not much to go on.

Dalton Saberhagen leads the CCL in wins with 6. Owenby is 3rd in the CCL with an ERA of 0.93. Saberhagen, Owenby and Maddox have been selected for the CCL All-Star Game. The game will be televised nationally by Fox West Sports at 10 PM, Wednesday July 17th.

Parker Wormsley had a .224 BA last season for the Vols in 76 at bats. For the Florence Red Wolves, of the Coastal Plain League, through 85 at bats, he's batting .271.

Christin Stewart leads the Alaska Baseball League in RBI's with 27, 9 more than the 2nd place guy. He's 2nd in the league with a .340 batting average, AJ Simcox is 3rd right behind him with a .339 BA and he leads the ABL in hits with 37. Trevor Bettencourt is tied for 2nd in the ABL with 30 K's.

Simcox finished the game 3-4 raising his batting average to .339 on the summer and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. In 27 games played, the Knoxville, Tennessee native has recorded a hit in 25 of them. Simcox leads the Alaska Baseball League with 37 hits while the Miners lead the league with a .275 team batting average.

“I definitely didn’t have that type of success freshman year of college, there were some definite growing pains there,” Simcox said. “I think as a whole, as a team, we’ve kind of matured as the season’s gone on and our approaches have been good throughout the year.”

Spanning the past 4 games and 23 innings of work, Eric Martin hasn't allowed a single run. His ERA is 1.21. Over that stretch, he's struck out 19 while only walking 3. His 37.1 innings leads the Cincinnati Steam of the Great Lakes League. On second glance, of the pitchers that have pitched 30 + innings, his ERA is the second best in the entire league.
