Good outing for Bettencourt. Stewart just keeps trucking along. Good to see. Kid is an extra base hitting machine.

6/30 wrap up.

RichRollin pretty much summed up the day in terms of looking at the stats.

We're pretty much at the half way point of the summer ball season. If it seems like I keep writing about, watching, but a few players, well...those are the guys playing. If I'm not watching or writing about a player it's because he's not playing. Sure, I might miss a guy here or there, but that rarely happens more than once.

What am I trying to say? There are quite a few guys that aren't showing up, or showing out, which ever the case may be. There are different reasons, I know Quillen and Flax and Kidd have injuries. Manis is on a deep roster. I don't know what's up with Parrish, Vizcaino and the biggest mystery is Scott Price. Nick Williams was asked about, I don't know, but tend to agree that he was allowed to bypass summer ball, though I have no info on that.

The point is this. Simcox, Stewart, VJax, Maddox, Moberg, Smart, Lee, Wormsley, Bettencourt, Owenby, Esparza, Saberhagen and Charpie are either everyday starters or in a regular rotation...in other words, showing up when they are s'posed to. Then there are guys like Aiken, Bily, Cox, Manis and Houser, they get some time, they get their chances and I try really hard not to miss them. Let's try to remember this when the inevitable roster cuts come. I should mention Youngblood here, the only incoming freshmen playing collegiate summer ball. His average isn't great, but he's puttin' in the work.

I'd also like to spend some time tonight talking about what I've SEEN. It's easy to look at the stats and say this or that. It's another thing to actually watch, read, listen to or about the games. Simcox is a leader. I noticed as the regular season went on, that he would occasionally go talk to the pitcher. In the ABL, he's an extension of the coaching staff. It's a unique quality to have, especially, when considering two weeks ago nobody knew anybody else. He has the respect of his team mates because he works at it. He's in a bit of a slump, but I'm not worried about it...AT ALL.

The coach of the Miners, Ben Taylor. He has really impressed me. He's the Associate Head Coach at Gilbert CC and a scout for the KC Royals. When AJ and Stew are up at night tweeting, he calls them out via twitter and tells them to go to bed. He just fell out of first place today, losing both games of a DH and he tweeted:

"There is no such thing as a tough day @the yard. You're at the yard, it's always plus plus. Back at it mañana, pants up having fun as always."

I've seen BCourt, Saberhagen, Esparza, Owenby and Charpie have a sort of toughness that wasn't on display during the regular season.

I've seen the frustration on VJax's face when he got off to a slow start and I've seen his determination and confidence as he's returned to form. Same with Taylor Smart. Maddox is Maddox.

I look forward to what is in store over this second half because everybody is playing for something now. They've either bought in or they haven't. They're either working to get better or they're not. It's a heck of a lot easier to cover 18 guys than 26 or whatever the number is s'posed to be.

I'm gonna miss WED-SUN. Going on vacation and there is no internet, computer detox if you will. I'll put up the updated stats tomorrow. GBO!

vol66, thanks for all of your updates. A friend of mine that knows Price said he was no longer playing this summer and may be going to summer school second semester. Vizcaino was in a sling in the stands at the last home series and I was told he had labrum surgery so he would not be playing this summer. I was told Parrish has decided not to play baseball any more and told the coaches this at the end of the season. Keep up the good work.

Thank you sir for your input. I was wondering about Viscaino myself. To not be a top ranked recruit by the "pundits", I felt dude showed potential. Not as a game breaker, but just a good solid player. Often you see a guy like him be the "glue" to a team so to speak. And baseball is in his blood...literally.

Again, thanks for the info. 66 and I were discussing the other day how limited fans are to college baseball offseason info, recruiting, etc. Thanks again.

My goodness, Owenby! Is he playing average competition, or is he just showing out?

It's the same league Saberhagen is playing in. Based on the SLO Blues roster, he's playing against very good competition and he's on the best team as of right now. I can't say that all the rosters look like the Blues, but it's pretty stout with lots of JRs and SRs form powerhouse programs. Check it out.

RichRollin brought up a good question. Anyone willing to rank the leagues?

That's really good news. At this point we need arms in the pen and starting.

Yes. I've been looking over stats the past couple of days and as far away as we seemed at the end of the season, some improvement in a few areas would drastically change the outcome of the season.

One of the most glaring stats is the fact that we gave away 40 HR, while only getting 13 of our own. If we cut those 40 in half, we win a lot of those one run games we lost. The bulk of those homers were given up by Godley, Williams and Quillen...but the ones that were the real crushers were given up by the rest when we were in position to win some games.

On the flip side, as a team, we didn't hit with any power. Another glaring stat is sac flys, we were last in the SEC in sac flys. We're not hitting home runs and we're not getting the RBI's we could have. Based on this summer, so far, it looks like a couple of guys are coming around in that department.

After looking at the stats, had we had the 2012 pitching and the 2013 hitting we probably would have made it to Hoover. Of course, that's not reality.

Based on what I've seen so far, we should be better at the plate, in terms of walks and strike outs, we should be better in the field, and a few of the guys are showing improvement on the mound. I don't know if that will be enough to get us over the hump, but I feel better today, than I did at the end of the season.

Sooooooooo, check this out. I was looking around to see if Maddox was playing tonight for team USA. He's not on the roster. I looked at the Hyannis Harbor roster and he's no longer on that team. BUUUUUUUUT, his name HAS shown up on the SLO Blues roster, wonder if he's gonna show up out there or call it a summer?
