'24 Vols Transfer Offers

Not against good players staying, but if they drag their feet and decide to leave anyway, it hurts the program if we've missed ot on guys we might have been interested in had we known they were leaving.

Besides Hooker who from the portal has been close to elite and championship level football? The best players have not been from the portal.

Why is the focus almost entirely on offense? Is it because Heupel is an offensive minded coach? We need to upgrade the defense. A TE, a WR, couple of OL... I get those are needs, but defensive secondary is a huge need as well.
They have recruited well out of the high school ranks on defense, so perhaps they are excited about what they have coming up behind the seniors.

Pearce, Josephs, West, C. Herring, Hobbs, Bradley, Weathersby, Ross, A. Carter, Telander, J. Smith, Spillman, Gibson, Matthews, Beasley, Carter, Goree.

Most of the recruiting "misses" have come along the offensive line, so you'd expect some additions there, but then it seems like the majority of our starting OL that can return is going to. Campbell, Mays, Spraggins, and maybe Mincey.

We have a ton of young WRs that have a lot to prove, so I can understand going after an instant impact player or two there. TE is another place where don't have much depth, and certainly no proven depth. I'm a little shocked we told Joly no because I think we could use him and Staes or the kid from Louisiana. Maybe we still take two, but Joly isn't one of then.

I'd think we wouldn't turn away an instant impact LB, CB, or S if the right kids came available and showed interest.

Or a DL.

Not for us. For whatever reason, we don't recruit those players. For the life of me, I can't figure out why. They're out there, we just don't go get them. Other than Verse, I'm not sure we've pursued any.

I'm not at home and don't have access to my data. My sense has been the most elite players that transfer are very few and most go to playoff caliber programs. Maybe I can review data this weekend when back home.

We need to land some talent though. I think Joly would have helped. I know we lost a few scholarships and have to be picky but I don’t want to hear we passed on players only to read we are just waiting on the next group after spring practice.

The group of players after spring practice are not as good as the first batch during this time period.

John Campbell and Bru McCoy are probably my favorite transfer portal additions under Heupel. Both are championship quality to me.

Other good additions include Kamal Hadden, Gabe Jeudy Lally, Omar Norman Lott, and Chase McGrath. I think we've had some other solid, tenporary depth pieces as well.

Also, I think the longer we sustain our success, the more we will appeal to the higher rated transfer players.

Why not tell the current players they need to make a decision so the coaches can act? Make the players aware they are potentially hurting our program through indecision, because if they decide to leave later, a lot of good players will already be off the board.
You don't want to do that when we still have a bowl game to play. They've supposedly had individual talks with every player already, and we've had very few scholarship players or walk-ons officially hit the portal. You could push some older guys out, but run the risk getting embarrassed in the Citrus Bowl by a team with no offense to speak of.

Penix, Ewers, Nix, Jalen Daniels, almost all of FSU’s best players, and WR a few years ago Jameson Williams were all portal players. Has to be a combo of both portal and classes to win these days

I didn't say push anyone out, I said push them for a decision on whether or not they're coming back. If they want to leave, so be it. The sooner we know, the sooner we can find their replacement. If that offends them to the point we tank the bowl game, better to sacrifice a non-playoff bowl game than next season. Roster building for next season is more important than winning the bowl game. But we should be able to do both.

QBs are the biggest success stories from portal just like Hooker. But you better have complimentary players to compete for a championship. Talking league, not national.

UGA and Bama prove you don't need many portal players. You need lots of elite recruits.

55 percent of starting QBs were from portal this season.

I think guys they feel wouldn't be contributors by using the Covid year were probably told so in the meetings.

I believe he is very loyal. To players and staff. Is that a successful approach? Time will tell.

What I know about competing for championships is that the Tennessee talent level needs to be greatly improved. To compete with Georgia and Alabama, you need to consistently bring in the level talent they do. You won't get it in the portal. Has to be classes. Year after year.

If you can get a few NFL level players with a QB who has elite level season (last year for example) you might have a 10 win season. But won't be consistent in competing at top level. Need studs.

That is going to be harder with Texas and Oklahoma coming in.

So whatever needs to happen to get that level talent he needs to figure out soon. Tennessee fans lack the patience for a middle of the league type program. I've seen more grumbles regarding him this fall. Next season likely won't be as good as this season.

You’re predicting us to go 7-5 next season? Are you insane? Lmao

Didn't predict. Speculated.

Breaking in new QB but if they can convince a ton of seniors back, would help a ton to match 8.

The more new bodies they have to play, the less likely they are more successful. Jmo

232 is small regardless for a TE
My thing is

I get that they believe in Ethan Davis and all but...Joly is proven and legit.

Staes is a stud too, but Joly is a matchup nightmare. Similar to Bru really. I understand they need a blocking TE above all else, but I don't see why they can't promise to rotate three TE's.

Offense doesn’t sub for one. Staes would probably put up numbers with UCONN’s schedule too. Fans just want him bc they saw him live and he had some catches against their Vols

It’s nice to hear a highly respected poster that echoes my belief that championship level talent needs to be built through recruiting classes and not through the transfer portal.

I’m just as impatient as anyone and have been wondering why we don’t go after certain players. You have to be very careful on who you bring to the team and how much you’re willing to pay. The wrong guy(who’s just in it for the money/drama) could ruin the locker room. It could create tons of jealousy and a lack of trust within. Coaches have a tough job of balancing this and not giving in to the pressure. Hopefully they’ll get the right guys we need to help the rest of the 80 plus we’ve already got.

It is not a stretch... Tennessee could easily lose these five games next year:

NC State (In Charlotte)
at Oklahoma
Florida
Bama
@ Georgia

In fact, we will likely only be favored in two of those games listed above. If Nico is not what people expect him today be, then all five of those games could be losses.

Most people don't disagree, but we don't appear to be putting together championship level recruiting classes. Need that to change. In order for that to change, we need to win on the field. Supplementing classes with portal guys will help us win. Winning leads to better recruiting.

Joly’s gonna be a good player, but we definitely didn’t need 4 TEs with the same exact skillsets.

Better to have Haes as the more balanced guy while bringing in Davis as the pass catcher in two TE sets and in 2 minute drills to start getting more experience. Davis might also see some run in 4 wide sets as a jumbo WR to create mismatches and help block on perimeter screens the way Bru did.

It’s interesting that fans want to be like ole miss and Auburn, burning up the transfer portal instead of like the current champions who build mostly through recruiting

Whether they know it or not, about 60% of VN just needs a good excuse to melt down. For some, panic is addicting.
