'24 Vols Transfer Offers

The guys around him every day clearly have high expectations as well. Guys like Campbell and Mays don’t return if they think next season will be a “growing pain” season.
That may more so depend on NIL deals and NFL feedback they are receiving. Has Mays said he’s coming back for sure? I assume he is as well with him skipping senior festivities, just haven’t seen where he came out and said it.

You predict Heupel to do it in the old one for the first time in 15 years? Missed those posts from you when he was hired.

Did not expect that. Did not expect the kind of season Hooker had. They both were exceptional that season.

Had no idea how successful Heupel would be when hired.

Good to see you posting, Larry.

Merry Christmas to you and yours. And I agree, nice to see the realistic perspective.

Personally id be beating every bush, uncovering every stone to find talent, not just depth. I mean, upper echelon talent. Something just doesnt seem right, when this program cant consistently win as many H2H battles for upper echelon recruits. It isnt logical and it doesnt compute.
Thank you.

Loyalty plus roster size doesn't equate to lot of hard recruiting imo.

Penix, Ewers, Nix, Jalen Daniels, almost all of FSU’s best players, and WR a few years ago Jameson Williams were all portal players. Has to be a combo of both portal and classes to win these days
Recruiting is still the main catalyst too building a strong program. The portal is simply for filling gaps. Many guys leaving the portal will be moving down in competition, some are no upgrade for some teams to take. Plus with the 85 number and many good players staying you aren’t talking about acquiring the same numbers out of the portal. GBO

Yup, exactly what I’m saying. AND you can also find some great players in the portal

Understand that. Most of the time expectations are not met.
I know you as a poster well enough to know that, well, you know. So this isn't meant to disparage you or attack what you know. But given what you're saying, which I have no reason not to believe, the reasoning on the part of the coaches is circular. But according to what you're saying:

-We have 7-8 win talent for next year.
-It's year 4 of Heupel's tenure. Heupel said when he was hired that he intends to compete for championships immediately. Now I'm sure that was a bit of hyperbole, but he certainly knows that Year 4 at Tennessee, the expectations aren't 7/8 wins. It's to compete for championships, as he stated.
-In order to compete with Georgia/Alabama, we need more dudes.
-We're not attacking the portal because there aren't enough dudes there.

Except there are dudes there. We don't get a lot of them because we don't attack the portal. Alabama got Burton and Ricks from the portal. And the LT from Vandy last year. FSU got Keon Coleman and Jared Verse from the portal. Georgia got RaRa Thomas. Colorado got Travis Hunter and the TE. I haven't named a single QB. There are plenty of plug and play talented players from the portal, but YOU HAVE TO GO AFTER THEM. In fact, Tennessee has gotten Bru McCoy, Omar Norman-Lott, Keenan Pili, and John Campbell from the portal.

So we're just gonna sit tight with a 7/8-win roster and hope to keep building...in year 4? Really? That makes ZERO sense. If you don't have the talent on your roster, you do what you can to get it. And in the era of the portal, there's no reason not to.

How do we not know that the staff isn’t contacting more players than we know in the background and the players are just not interested.

If my son played D I would seriously counsel him against UT because of all the Fire Willie/Banks talk. Negative fans have a right to talk but it does effect how a team is viewed to the outside world.

I'm not defending any strategy. Just trying to state what I think it is.

Maybe they surprise me with results. I just think with a young QB there are likely a struggle or two.

Isn’t there typically a additional rounds of portal entries following the bowls and following spring practice? If the space under our upcoming 83 player limit is not fully clear, perhaps we are being highly selective during the initial phase of the first round of targets.
