War in Ukraine

Agreed on Belarus. Makes no sense.

Moldova I could see though. Putin loves connecting him some borders.

I think he would take the Russian part of Moldovia that is 20% of their land but the rest of the country really isn't of any value. Ukraine is a very valuable region to own and it makes sense why Russia wants Ukraine. Ukraine, on paper, has the potential to be a decent world power and is the second most populous region of the former Soviet Union as well as having a lot of historic industry, resources, and tons of valuable farmland. Basically, historically Ukraine was a very rich province of the old Russian Empire. It was called the breadbasket of the Russian Empire. Soviet mismanagement and Chernobyl messed them up some but they are still a valuable province.

I didnt realize that Ukraine owned what would otherwise be Moldovas coastline. That's why I was thinking Russia would want it.

Oh my God....three countries now and next Poland and the plains of Germany. The fear mongering is incredible.

It was strategic. There is a Russian part of Moldovia that has Russian troops in it now "protecting" the minority. However, historically, most Moldovans are Romanians in decadency and I would see them joining Romania. They were a part of Romania after WW1 but Stalin stole that piece of land in 1940 and never gave it back.

Possible Romanian unification would be why Putin would want Moldova now. Otherwise it could unify with a NATO member.

Breserbaria I know.

It always amuses me that Ras defends Putin as not Stalin. But we keep seeing Putin doing Stalinesque moves.

I think it's in part due to the way we teach history. We focus on the Germans and Japanese because we fought them. But we ignore what else went on during those times, and yes that includes our own bad stuff.

I will say this, though, if Russia can pull that off, they are about back to the same level of power and prestige that they were in in the Soviet Union era. The two biggest losses to Russia were Belarus and Ukraine. Get both of those nations back and they are up to a population of over 250 Million and have most of their industrial base and mineral resources back in their Empire.

If I was ruling Russia, I would want Belarus and Ukraine back.

The negative is that if Putin does this, he is going to have regions full of mostly hostile populaces that were forced under his rule and insurgency could very well be likely and make it very difficult to hold.
I strongly disagree with this. It would hamper Ukraine’s future, but it wouldn’t “make Russia great again.”

The assertion was that they were THE most important US military ally which again is factually incorrect no matter how much you defend it
He didn’t say most important military ally. He said “greatest ally.” It’s not far fetched at all. Alliances with your neighbors are generally more important than alliances with stronger military powers.

How did you type that with a straight face? Ok, they definitely aren’t the “greatest” military ally. Canada’s military pales in comparison to Great Britain’s. So the definition of “greatest” is your closest neighbor? That’s an even worse assertion

Had there not been prior expansion of NATO right after the Cold War...just maybe it wouldn’t have come to a head with expansion into Ukraine. How about a European security structure that involves Russia more...the US, less?
Makes too much sense. Never will happen.

No, that’s not what I said. But they’re a massive country that share an enormous border and strong cultural ties.
