War in Ukraine

Good news. Per Bloomberg:

US and Germany to Send Ukraine Armored Vehicles in Major Arms Upgrade

The US and Germany will send armored vehicles to Ukraine, a significant upgrade in firepower urgently sought by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in the fight against Russia’s invasion, according to people familiar with the matter.
In an announcement that may come as soon as Thursday, the US will send Bradley Fighting Vehicles while Germany is expected to send its Marder vehicles, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing deliberations that are still private.
President Joe Biden was expected to discuss the matter with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Thursday. White House spokespersons didn’t immediately comment.
Armored vehicles have been near the top of Zelenskiy’s wish list as his forces seek to counter the tanks and other armored vehicles that have been a key advantage for Russia in the conflict so far. During a visit to the US last month, he reiterated the need for heavier weapons.
“Ukraine never asked the American soldiers to fight on our land instead of us,” Zelenskiy told Congress in a speech on Dec. 21. “I assure you that Ukrainian soldiers can perfectly operate American tanks and planes themselves.”
US officials had previously balked at the idea of sending armored vehicles, saying that heavier weapons would be too difficult for Ukraine to operate and maintain. But allies already have announced moves to provide such weapons. Poland has provided tanks, and France said on Wednesday that it will send its AMX-10RC armored vehicles.
The US vehicles, which are armored infantry vehicles equipped with anti-tank missiles capable of carrying troops into combat, will be part of a presidential drawdown of equipment from existing Pentagon inventories. The Defense Department is expected to formally announce that drawdown on Friday.
Ukrainian officials have warned that Russia may be gearing up for a fresh offensive in the spring. Equally, the warmer weather might let Kyiv’s forces press the advantage, having pushed Russian forces out of areas they occupied in the early days of the war.

Other people familiar with the matter, who also asked not to be identified discussing private deliberations, said earlier Wednesday that Germany was nearing a decision to send dozens of Marder vehicles from its stocks. The people said the decision hadn’t been made final but was close.
“In the past, we have always tailored our support for the Ukrainian army to the situation,” Robert Habeck, Germany’s economy minister and vice chancellor, said Thursday during a visit to Oslo. “Now France has decided to supply light armor systems, and the US has indicated plans to do the same. That will certainly influence the German debate as well.”
Scholz has come under renewed pressure from political allies in Germany to step up efforts to support Ukraine with more heavy weapons after France pledged to deliver combat vehicles.
In an editorial in Germany’s Bild newspaper recently, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko called on Germany to send its Leopard tanks, saying it would be difficult otherwise to capture more territory from Russia.
Biden confirmed on Wednesday an earlier Bloomberg News report that sending the infantry fighting vehicles was under consideration. “Yes,” he told reporters when asked if the option was on the table.
Although the Bradley Fighting Vehicle is lighter than a tank, David Perkins, a retired US four-star general, said last month that it would be a “significant improvement over current Ukrainian fighting vehicles” and is “more than a match” for Russia’s infantry fighting vehicles and its T-72 tanks.
While on vacation in St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands over the holidays in late December, Biden signed a $1.7 trillion government funding bill that included $47 billion in additional aid for Ukraine. The US has already appropriated about $65 billion in such aid.

Glad Germany finally came around.

Putin showing obvious weakness. Russia is having issues with both a shortage of artillery shells and competent troops.

If I'm Zelensky, thanks Vlad! We'll shoot your troops between the eyes while the "cease fire".

Putin Orders 36-Hour Cease-Fire

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday ordered Moscow’s armed forces to observe a 36-hour cease-fire in Ukraine this weekend for the Russian Orthodox Christmas holiday, the first such sweeping truce move in the nearly 11-month-old war.

Putin did not appear to make his cease-fire order conditional on a Ukrainian agreement to follow suit, and it wasn’t clear whether hostilities would actually halt on the 1,100-kilometer (684-mile) front line. Ukrainian officials have previously dismissed Russian peace moves as playing for time to regroup their forces and prepare for additional attacks.

AMX10s. The Russians will hate them not just because they're French.

Also, FWIW Bradleys destroyed more Iraqi tanks than our M1s did.

Who makes this decision?
The Russians. For now there will be blood for as long as Putin wants. I think the war is unpopular but Putin is still feared/respected/liked enough where the dislike of the war hasnt become a serious threat to him. But each month adds a little more pressure, just like it does for Zelensky. But it's easier to explain and justify contuining a defense rather than an offensive.

Even if we had built up Ukraine for another 2 decades, and let them join NATO, they never would have been a real threat to Russia. Russia had to be the aggressor in 2022, because much later would have been too late for them to achieve their goals.

Welp we have our first out right documented war crimes. Good job.

I would say that is humiliating and degrading.

Definitely humiliating, degrading AND a war crime.

All the dead Ukrainian civilians the Russians target, rape, torture and kill daily would agree too... but they're mostly dead.

All's fair in love and war. I encourage the Ukrainian troops to do what they need to do to intimidate Putin's tools - maybe carve the dead Russian troops into Mahjong pieces and play an oversized game out in the snow. Alternatively, if they needed to build a big wall to fend off the raiding hordes of Xerxes, they could even use the Russians for mortar.

And oh BTW, the victor writes the history books.

Oh my... I'm sure this will get the boomers, neo-cons and neo-liberals panties in a bunch.

Dmitry Medvedev

The State Department published an unctuous appeal to the people of Russia, like we love you all. It ends in their typical nasty Jesuit style: "in solidarity with each of you who strive to create a more peaceful future." And the war in Ukraine, they say, is unworthy of everyone like that.

Even for these first-class freaks, this is the height of cynicism and the limit of moral degradation. The United States is spending tens of billions on the war in Ukraine, supplying its weapons on a gigantic scale, exterminating thousands of people by proxy. This is extreme cynicism in the best traditions of the Nazis. Yes, in fact, sons of bitches, carrying such nonsense, are the real heirs of the Reich Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels.
Only this stillborn nonsense no longer affects anyone. And you will not receive the answer to it in the silence of the office.

The main gift for the New Year with the ammunition load of the Zircon missiles went yesterday to the shores of the NATO countries. 1000 km range of their use with hypersonic Mach 9 and the ability to use any charge with a guarantee overcome any missile defense. Let it stand somewhere 100 miles from the coast, closer to the Potomac River. So rejoice!
Will bring to life anyone who will pose a direct threat to Russia and our allies.

You and your henchmen who kill our people will never be forgiven. We will speak to you in the language of power, if you don't understand it any other way. And produce even more modern weapons. To thresh with them the Nazi carrion that you gave birth to in the 21st century. Revenge every criminal for every murdered citizen of our country.

I get the hatred and desire to send messages like that but a professional army controls those urges. I guarantee you any officer or senior NCO in the US or various European armies assisting in this are pissed at that demonstration

If you mean laughing our asses off as getting our panties bunched then sure Moe. Russia can’t handle Ukraine and they’re gonna threaten the US?! Medvedev is an idiot and anyone believing that’s a real threat is a moron. Congrats you’ve become Kim Jong Un Jr… 🤡

So your argument is the Ukrainians should be like the Russians.....

I call them like I see them. That's a war crime. If we deny the Ukrainian crimes Ras and crew will deny the Russian ones.

If you care about peace or a better world you would call out both so that they are ended. Neither side wants to accept they arent perfect so it will never be admitted.
