War in Ukraine

By the way, even though I am worried about the depth of our involvement in the war, I feel the need to point out a true story that forever won a special place in my heart for the Ukrainians. In 988 AD, the Pagan Prince Vladimir of Kiev was considering what religion the infant Ukrainian/Proto Russian state should adopt. He initially considered Islam but when he found out Islam forbade both alcohol and pork, he decided that Russia would instead become Christian. And the rest, as they say, is history 😂
Gotta pull for a people like that

Yeah, we probably should be worried about what comes next. Power vacuums in muslim countries tend to lead to shizz shows.

Personally I think he was leading Turkey into an Islamic dictatorship so hopefully his replacement will be more secular but probably not.

Whoever takes his place will have to have the backing of the Turkish military which i suspect would only allow a similar authoritarian. What made Turkey such a stalwart ally in the 1960s through the 1990s was a combination of their anti soviet stance (dating all the way back to the wars between the Tsars and the Ottoman Turks and the eternal Russian desire to control the Bosporus and Dardanelles) and the pronounced secularism of the Turkish State from the period of Atatürk.
With the current changes, neither condition applies to make Turkey a dependable ally

To quote my own post and play arm chair military analysis with only couple interest I believe this has to do with Sudan evacuation. it is on going...

There's been a lot going on in that corner of the world. A couple of British planes including a C-17 flying out of Cyprus, and a Hungarian military A-319 headed home from Egypt. One of our C-17s popped up at altitude and then disappeared over the Aegean - headed NW with no trail showing the origin. Another Brit C-17 popped up over the Sinai headed roughly north with a big piece of missing track but showing Cyprus as the origin,
