War in Ukraine

I didn’t see mention of which component got damaged in there did I miss it? You had mentioned/speculated a launcher was damaged in another post I replied to?

And why the idiot orcs aren’t simply using SEAD weapons like our AGM-88 against the air defense batteries I’ll never know. Yet another example of their total incompetence
yeah, it was just speculation on what was actually damaged. the only thing I have seen suggested was it wasn't a critical part, to call it "destroyed", but it may not be operating at peak efficiency anymore and thus vulnerable to the next attack.

Understood. Thanks

Like hurling missiles into residential neighborhoods?

Please stop lecturing anyone on terrorism. You and your orc buddies are so comfortable targeting civilians that you don't even recognize how completely fuqd up it is.

Every day you come in here and step on your dick while pretending it doesn't hurt. I guess it stands to reason, it's become very clear that russians are pretty dim.
It's quite clear that these folks are massive POS. It's not debatable

I just want to drop in and say the politics forum is easily the most entertaining on VN.

That's excellent news. Means we aren't doing another coaching search, and fans aren't jumping off Neyland because things are not going well ... or Hype hasn't done a Kiffin. Not to say the NCAA might not screw up the serenity. Some of us are refugees from the football forum - the days when the PF was far saner than the FF.

So if that’s the claim then they didn’t get near the brains of the system. The fire control RADAR.

Patriot uses a central fire control RADAR and processor hooked up to about four or five launchers. Each launcher capable of a volley of four interceptors.

An article in The Drive says it was unclear if the damage was due to a Russian missile or a Patriot malfunction. One Hawk missile like the one on the left had a problem on the launcher when it fired. The warhead and the guidance package were blown off the front of the missile and the engine ignited on both ends. It fell off the launcher and started spinning like a big fireworks display - which we didn't figure out until later. All we could see (from not real far away) was a big cloud and flashes coordinated with a "whoompfh) - the flashes and noise were the ends of the missile engine pointing in our direction as it turned and burned. At some point we realized maybe standing there in the open watching wasn't the smartest move. It was drizzly that day, so I didn't have my camera out to take a few pictures. Anyway not all missile launches go as planned. Most times something fails and it just doesn't go - the other times can be interesting.

Sounds like remote launchers from the fire control station is a learned design attribute. Nice 😂

Russia isn’t a state sponsor of terrorism. Russia is a terrorist state.

Reports are indicating the British Storm Shadow missiles are operational. Some unusual "explosions" taking place around the occupied areas but well behind the lines. Has a range of over 120 miles. Ukraine agreed to shoot them only within the pre-invasion borders. They seem to be focusing on command and control sites. Also the Brits are encouraging them to target Crimea.

If they can cut the Russians off from Crimea that would have a huge psychological impact on the Ruskies. You can't hide having to tell people to cancel their beach vacations.

As I recall the Hawk missile launchers at permanent sites were surrounded by berms. There might be a couple of reasons for that - not just the launch kind of mishap. The illuminators that locked on and tracked a target could slew all over the site and the radar beam could zap the other radars and missiles. Each of the illuminators had a no point zone, and you know somebody would manage every now and then to screw that up. I saw one of two illuminators that locked on to each other in our shop on Okinawa. The guts were fried - like absolutely charred. The missile guys carried the crystals for the missile receivers in their toolboxes - apparently they got zapped from time to time.

Neither, but damage from a Russian missile could amount to nothing more than falling debris. The target would have been the radars and not the launchers, so clearly the missile would have missed the intended target, and a damaged launcher would probably say it was debris and not a warhead.

What difference does it make if they hit launchers or radars? It is all an integrated system and the Ukrainians don't have means of easily replacing either.

Interesting thread detailing Russian small unit tactics. Took a well fortified Ukrainian position while losing 3 infantrymen and 1 tank operator.

Man, you know times are tough for the moskals when they're celebrating only losing a few infantry and one tank. Truly pathetic.
