War in Ukraine

What are you a Russian bot? So what if he shared intel with China, you do that all the time to influence another country. We've been sharing intel with the world the last two weeks.

As far as XI, he wants us distracted because it weakens Taiwan. We should be seriously improving their anti-ship and anti-aircraft defenses. Chinese really need a bloodless capitulation there. XI doesn't want to end up with 20,000 troops and invasion ships at the bottom of the Formosa straits, not that he would care about the lost troops, but those ships could not be easily replaced.

It's really too bad we can't get things stirred up between the Russians and Chinese again. In the late 60's, while Mao was still around, the Russians and Chinese had multiple border skirmishes with casualties on both sides. Their cultural hostility dates back to the Mongol hordes crossing the steppes into Russia.

There was even a Second City skit where a Russian diplomat is taunting his Chinese counterpart about China's then non-existent heavy missile capability resulting in the inability to hit Russia with they nukes and the Chinese diplomat says "No problem we have 1 million volunteers that will deliver it."

You're history lesson is worthless. We're talking about today and today they are forming a gentleman's wink and a nod.

Nobody in this thread, despite our domestic political bickering, is supporting Putin in this. Everyone sees it for what it is. We may have different opinions on how it got to this, but I’m not sure who you’re admonishing here.
I agree. We are where we are, and nothing that’s in the past is going to change that.

I agree no one is defending Putin now, but go back a couple weeks and you will find posts backing the Tucker Carlson line of thought on this from the right, which was that Putin was just trying to rightfully stave off NATO expansion.

It rang hollow then. It was Putin apology thinking. And now those who touted that crap just to bash Europe and NATO look like the idiots they are.

I wonder what Putin thought this would look like even if he pulled it off. That the Ukrainian people would simply accept whatever puppet regime he might install? Thank him for bringing them back into Russia?

Whatever fantasy he had it seems he was way off.

I think that he thought the majority of the Ukrainians would welcome the Russians as liberators against a repressive regime and that they would join them in toppling the government.

Yes, based on his rhetoric that's what he evidently thought. And he appears to have been terribly mistaken on that.

Huge difference between defending Putin and not wanting US ground troops involved, criticisms of a majority of NATO members is more than justified.

It wouldn’t be the first time the Russians greatly overestimated their popularity and military capabilities. Russia hasn’t won a stand alone war since Napoleon and Mother Nature saved them on that one.

Just watched an interview on Skynews with a former prime Minister of Finland. He said it was just a matter of time before Finland was a part of NATO. Said he expected Sweden to follow. He said he felt the world totally aligning against Putin will spell the end to him. He said regardless of what happens in Ukraine, that Putin's days were numbered and Russia would remove his regime internally. He basically said they won't have a choice.

That’s interesting. I thought I read somewhere where either Putin or Lavrov said that there would be a similar response if that happened.

It’s about damn time. That wanna be Napoleon has outlived his 15 minutes of fame.

I view that as an extremely small minority that viewed it that way. Most understand Putin for what he is, an untrustworthy thug that has enriched himself at the expense of others. However, I do think European and NATO countries need to have some self reflection wrt their commitment to security in the region. Can’t talk tough and then fold like a cheap tent when the chips are down, especially with totalitarian regimes like Putin’s.

It's the first time in history that the Finns have favored NATO membership according to polls. 45% for to 35% with the rest unsure. I think they see what's happening to Ukraine could happen to them.

Catching up, it appears that Putin (and the rest of the world) drastically underestimated the resolve and capabilities of the Ukrainians.

I don't see any way that this ends well for Putin. If he backs down, he is a dead man walking. If he pushes on and the casualties mount, he might be overthrown.

It will take some time, according to him. He said the financial burden of the world isolating Russia will eventually be too much to bare.
Oh I’d guess everyone whom used to be a puppet and hasn’t joined NATO yet will be shoring up their admission applications shortly. In fact you might wonder down the road if this crushes Russia then everyone forms a Eurasian alliance against China.
