War in Ukraine

Hopefully the Russians overthrow their oppressors and join the somewhat free world. So many of the Russians are good people. One of my best friends from childhood was a refugee of sorts from Russia.
I coached middle school soccer….. my assistant coach and star player was Russian….. I also know 2 Ukrainian families from playing on the same travel basketball team as their sons.

I think he overestimated his abilities but more importantly, thought they would actually be seen by (at least enough) Ukrainians as liberators. Thats also why they did not go scorched earth but started carefully. I also think he did not have this in plan for long because they would have had a much better build up. I HIGHLY suspect that he decided to do this after our own disaster last August in Afghanistan.

Amazing really. Couldn't be happier with the results so far. Main thing is keeping USofA well out of it. Sad for Ukrainian people who will still suffer. Sad too for the Russian mothers who will be bereaved in a war they did not want. Sad most of all that the Chinese are the real winners as the primary regional check against their growing military power has now all but evaporated.

Last people I am sad for is the American taxpayer who is likely to send $ billions to rebuild Ukraine after this.

Worked out pretty well with Japan and Germany methinks.

Even the smaller cities already occupied by Russia, older Ukrainians are protesting. There's no way on God's green earth that Russia can EVER "occupy" this country.

Ukrainian Mob

Putin wanted a war and so he deserves his own personal Vietnam, I do feel very sorry for the people that will needlessly die in order for that to occur

Stolen from Reddit:

PUTIN: Sanctions do not scare me. The West is weak.

THE WEST: Sanctions are in effect now.

PUTIN: HOW DARE YOU? I'LL ****ING NUKE THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!

Him threatening nukes is a pretty sure sign he's floundering. He was expecting a fight with Glass Joe and got rocked by Mike Tyson instead, he's got to be trying to figure out how to unwind this while saving face. Admitting defeat or looking weak is not an option for this guy.

I don’t doubt that many Russians support him and maybe even the invasion. That said, a lot of Russians are no doubt having an “are we the baddies” moment.

No way you just called Biden “Mike Tyson” lol. I’ve read it all….

People need to realize we give financial aid for our own benefit and are absolutely putting America first when doing so.

In the past, I would agree. Today? not so much. Do I think that those in power (whether Dem or GOP) actually are putting America first when bailing out foreign countries, domestic banks, various industries? That it is even their intention? No. It is some other agenda (like climate change, trans rights, etc) at best? and personal gain at worst. Also, all of that Marshall plan and rebuilding Japan was predicated on an America that was a net PRODUCER of goods. Now we are CONSUMERS and the bits we do produce are services. That means out of all the money that will go to Ukraine, the bulk of it will find its way to China, who actually makes the goods.

Dont disagree here.

Which was the catalyst for WW2, had there been a true enemy in WW1 there would never have been a WW2. It was the enforced democratization of Germany and the punitive nature of the treaty that made WW2 inevitable. Germany was bearing the brunt of a war in didn't start. IF Russia sees another revolution which I highly doubt because society is different today, then what comes out of it needs to be allowed into the World markets and not ostracized due to its Communist past. Assuming what comes out of it resembles some form of an open, free nation. That is a lot of ifs but you can't keep kicking a country while its down and expect it not to fight back eventually.

I think it's almost always personal gain.

If I look at, say, USAID spending, I begin to realize that nearly all the AID money goes straight to the pockets of people that have "retired" out of high-level government positions into companies that win USAID contracts. Most famously there was a quarter billion dollar program designed to get 70k+ Afghan women into better jobs in the workforce that, over its years in existence, managed to place something like 50 women into jobs. The intent of government spending these days both domestically and abroad is to be a retirement plan for govvies.

Hopefully our guys have been on them before they even left port.

I understand all of it , and the need for it , but not going to lie it makes me nervous to see everybody all packed in so close together , one miscalculation, one pilot flying over the wrong airspace and it will get nasty PDQ .

Swiss actually followed through. I suspect this action will really hurt Putin and most of the oligarchs big time.

Switzerland backs full EU sanctions against Russia

Switzerland has backtracked on its previous stance by deciding on Monday to adopt the full range of sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia.

Neutral Switzerland had previously declined freezing the assets of Russian individuals and companies. But the government has now decided that such a stance is no longer compatible with preserving its neutrality in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Swiss President Ignazio Cassis called Russia’s invasion of Ukraine an “attack on sovereignty, freedom, democracy and the population and institutions of a free country”, which also affected Switzerland. “Playing into the hands of an aggressor is not neutral,” he added.

Switzerland will now block the assets of 363 individuals and four corporate entities. This includes Russian president Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Foreign Minister Sergii Lavrov.

Also on Monday, Switzerland followed suit with other European countries in closing its airspace to Russian flights.

I hope he's referring to the Ukrainians themselves as Mike Tyson, and not Biden.

Biden never crossed my mind, assumed it was Ukrainians.

I know most in this thread desperately want to turn this into a Trump/Biden slug fest but we have others threads where that is covered extensively.

He's going to go all in on something tonight. He's going to use Belarus troops as his "shock" troops, and make an all in push, and you can stop with your russia fear propaganda. At some point you are going to have to stand up to this guy, and he has failed at every attempt. I don't think most of Belarus wants this fight either.
