War in Ukraine

If the Russians were not in control, why were the Ukrainians shelling? Your circular reasoning needs some work

Because there was a civil war in Ukraine....Kiev vs the breakaway states of Donetsk and Luhansk. Minsk 2 was mediated by France, Germany and Russia. Both sides agreed to a ceasefire.

Kiev kept pounding Eastern Ukraine and ethic Russians. That’s why we are where we are.

Russia wasn’t in control....obviously. Even if they were...14k East Ukrainian civilians didn’t deserve to die...

Heathens. Despicable lying inhuman. Black hearts, and blacker souls.

Chernobyl is graphite moderated which makes it particularly susceptible to bad fires that carry radiation. These are light water reactors. I'm not going to say this isn't bad. But these plants are more resilient than Twitter thinks. The important part is to keep the grid online, diesel generators ready, and staff working. Not too worried about missiles.

And if they do cause an accident, we should do something drastic. I don't know what because technically it's not worth nuclear war (the casualties from a release would likely be small). But it's stupid.

A better question is why didn't one of our agencies dedicated to handling emergencies have a huge stockpile of N-95 masks stored away in the first place? If you've ever worked in a nuclear plant, you'd know respirators are worn in contaminated areas. If protective gear like N-95 masks weren't stockpiled along with other protective gear, what's the contingency plan for a nuclear attack or a screwup like Fukushima where they failed to adequately protect their spent fuel? Just breathe in lots of contaminated material? Don't you ever get the impression we are paying a lot for government bureaucracies and receiving not much in return?

It is an excellent question. You would think the military had a bunch of them left over from Afghanistan and Iraq. But assuming that FEMA would be agency with the expertise to warehouse them, I guess that they just wanted to focus on the natural disasters.

I have to admit I am a lower level prepper: water, food, medical supplies, power alternatives and weapons. (Yes I know the conservatives don't believe it but I own multiple guns.) I had a supply of N-95 masks. The reason I had all that stuff is the list on Homeland Security's webpage about what each household show have for emergencies.

So why didn't they follow their own webpage to know what they should have available?

Europe's biggest nuclear power plant is ON FIRE after being attacked by Russian tanks: 'Increased radiation levels' are detected after livestreamed footage showed explosions as heavy weapons targeted the facility in southern Ukraine

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, the largest of its kind in Europe, was on fire in the early hours of Friday morning after an attack by Russian troops, the mayor of the nearby town of Energodar said.

A government official told The Associated Press elevated levels of radiation are being detected near the site of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the information has not yet been publicly released. Plant spokesman Andriy Tuz told Ukrainian television that it is urgent to stop the fighting to put out the flames.

A live feed from the station showed flames at the site in the east of country, having earlier showed tanks firing at buildings - sparking fears of a radiation disaster in the nation currently under invasion by Russian forces.

Reports said there was 'shooting from all sides' at the site which has six nuclear reactors. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is the largest of its kind in Europe, and accounts for about one quarter of Ukraine's power generation.

Man, is anyone asking the question as to why Chernobyl is being targeted? Is this just a random attack by a madman like Putin or is there something else behind this?

You all need to be better critical thinkers...

Top Russian General is Killed by Ukrainian Sniper as Kyiv claims 9,000 of Putin’s troops have Died during invasion

A top Russian general has been killed amid bitter fighting in Ukraine in what represents a major blow to the Russian invasion.

Major General Andrey Sukhovetsky, who was the deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army of Russia's Central Military District, died yesterday as Ukrainian defence forces repelled the Russian offensive.

His death has not yet been officially confirmed by Russia's Ministry of Defence, but was announced on social media by his colleague Sergey Chipilyov and was widely reported by several Russian and Ukrainian news outlets.

A military source confirmed that he was killed 'by a sniper', and suggested a funeral for the Major General - by far the most senior Russian figure to have died in the conflict thus far - will be held in Russia on Saturday.
