If Ron Paul had gotten the support Trump did, we could have had a real conservative/classical liberal in the White House. Instead we got a populist dog whistler who said conservative things while signing every spending bill sent to his desk.

Herman Cain world have also been great as well. But the GOP establishment at the time made sure his candidacy didn't last long.

They like small government, except when the government is doing something that favors them in which case they are suddenly on board with it.

There were current Republicans that didn't sign those spending bills. So someone like Thomas Massie is the type of Republican you're talking about. And the Republicans who fought these vaccine mandates which went against individual rights.

The government forcing the opposition to do what the Left has always wanted is "righteous" so the ends justify the means in their eyes. Covid mandates were just because they "saved lives"; Insurance mandates were just because they "saved lives"; expanded welfare payments are just because they are "fair"; etc. etc. etc.

The problem is we still have a small portion of people who want this old GOP order back. It's not happening. I think some have realized it so they have latched on to the democrat party and mainstream media outlets. I refer to them as Bush Republicans.
That's where one switch has occurred. Many of the Bush Republicans have hopped onto the democrat party while many working class democrats have switched to the Republican Party under Trump.

Ironically, Trump brought in working class and minority voters to the GOP and the old GOP order turned their nose up. They want their donor class back. They cant as easily enrich themselves on working class populism.

There is a war going on right now so of course they have put covid and the vaccine to the side for now. They found another group of people to villianize - Russians.
