Agree. Unless you count having to destroy a place to save it for yourself and alienating all the inhabitants for decades, Russia is definitely not winning. I think the high amount of losses is primarily a result of the Russians philosophy toward warfare. They have a history of fighting in this manner.

Lives are cheap in communist countries and to the mind of ex communist leaders, so it makes sense they fight wars without a care for casualties. In fact, those countries became communist because lives were cheap and nobody was offering anything better ... until the communist doctrine offered a bundle of lies promising a better tomorrow ... which was only really better for the leaders.

No doubt the US would kick Russia's ass in a war, but the nuclear and China wild cards make it a huge deterrent.

Depends on where the was is fought. Russia has a huge landmass. If you fight there, they retreat until you follow into the trap. Think of it as a large fluffy pillow capable of smothering you. It just absorbs armies and logistics, and guerilla warfare destroys logistics and rear support bases. Probably a lot of what Eisenhower was thinking when he warned about wars on an Asian landmass ... and a big part of Russia is in Asia, although I don't think he literally thought Russia.
