What terms is Russia agreeable to and what has the United States countered with?

Outside of some religious lunatic no world leader is launching nukes (Outside of some wild multibillionaire conspiracy) for one simple reason and that is all the riches they have amassed robbing the citizens of their country would be lost. I just dont get the appeal of Putin invading Ukraine...He may be ruthless, but his primary focus is self preservation of power, and I just dont see what he gains in objective to offset blood and treasure.
Seeing Vindman on Morning Joe basically advocating the largest conflict as "inevitable" on European soil in 75 years gives me the willies.
