War in Ukraine

I just dont get the appeal of Putin invading Ukraine...He may be ruthless, but his primary focus is self preservation of power, and I just dont see what he gains in objective to offset blood and treasure.
Seeing Vindman on Morning Joe basically advocating the largest conflict as "inevitable" on European soil in 75 years gives me the willies.

The delay in this was Trump being elected, that plan was put in place years ago.

Outside of some religious lunatic no world leader is launching nukes (Outside of some wild multibillionaire conspiracy) for one simple reason and that is all the riches they have amassed robbing the citizens of their country would be lost. There are no winners in a nuclear war and all that graft and corruption over decades would have been for naught.
If things get bad enough, I could see nukes being used as a last ditch effort.

Also, there are indirect applications of nuclear weapons such as an EMP attack.

Any use of nukes negates the riches these people have amassed over the decades. Any EMP attack on us would come from a rogue player like NK or Muslim terrorist (country). We are the worlds piggy bank so why would any world power break that?

No. It's the end of any world leaders world. Putin doesn't want to die by nuclear holocaust. A religious freak might. Not Vlad. Not The Fat Boy in North Korea. You don't gain enormous wealth and power just to have it taken from you by the death of everyone who serves you.

You do realize that Russia borders Ukraine and the United States doesn't, right? Your question doesn't make logical sense.
You stated Russia doesn't want us on their borders, they chose Ukraine, how many troops are there? How many NATO troops are in the former break offs?

My question makes perfect sense.

Not really. They are at the moment still on the Russian side of the border... where they belong. Again, how close to the border on the Russian side would be okay with you? 5 miles? 20 miles?

I see you answered none of the questions....... How convenient. You need a bucket?

Hmmmm... they are trying desperately to make crush Ukraine and gather up whatever resources they can.

The BBC’s Ukrainian coverage of the press conference reported that Zelensky meant 12.5 billion hryvnia. The president lamented that the country had to use up part of its gold reserves to stabilize the currency, which he said had reached its highest level in a decade.

“It’s [a] very expensive price to pay for Ukraine,” Zelensky lamented.

This is what Russia does (see Georgia), creeping annexation. They issue Russian passports to these separatist areas and then have a built in reason to intervene in the future if they so desire. Also seeing more signs that Russian National Guard (Rosgvardia) are starting to move which is not a good sign.

Why else would NATO be moving up to Russia's border and arming countries to the teeth in the process?
It looks to me like several small former Eastern Bloc countries that wouldn't be able stand up to Russia wanting to control them decided to safeguard their independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. There was politics involved as well. IIRC some of the countries joined the EU not long after joining NATO.

I'm sure some NATO countries enjoyed the expansion of their influence and reduction of Russian influence, but not with the thoughts of Russian invasion.

Zelensky and his team haven’t ruled out that Russia might invade, and by many outward appearances, Ukraine is preparing for war. The country is receiving shipments of arms and military assistance from allies. Volunteers are training to fight in the streets of Kyiv. Ukrainian intelligence has moved sensitive files and equipment out of its headquarters in the capital to safe locations in the west of the country, according to officials familiar with the matter who, like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive operations.

But Western officials have been unsettled by Zelensky and his team’s public skepticism and what they perceive as his lack of focus.

“There’s this split among his administrative advisers and what he may be hearing from his military and intelligence services,” said a U.S. government official specializing in Russian affairs. “I think Zelensky and his political team are working from their own set of priorities, and they do not necessarily accord with those of the intelligence and military.”

Zelensky is either just not prepared for this moment as a leader or he has his head in the sand and doesn't want to believe either way its not good.

good chance zelensky is surrounded by russian operatives by now. The reason Putin does this is because he wants "mother russia" back. He resents what democracy did to his country.

Why would Germany block arms sales to Ukraine from another country? Ukraine isn’t asking Germany to fight for them, just to allow them to defend themselves. How the hell is that Germany’s call? Then Germany sends 5,000 helmets? A little obtuse.
