In the case of Muslims, my idea that was submitted is to announce at the UN a new deal for the Muslim world. For every major attack like 9/11 on our soil we will destroy something valuable to them. For our own sakes I believe we should start with Medina, next would be the black space rock in Mecca and finally the Dome of the Rock. Degrees we start at will depend on the type of attack, obviously we can add other targets like the blue mosque or maybe napalm to their annual pilgrimage.
Either they start policing their own or we will destroy that which they draw faith from.
I was going to say that would only upset the more moderate Muslims creating more fanatics....then I remembered the utter lack of contempt and outrage displayed by these "moderate" Muslims against their more extreme brethren everytime we see a video of a beheading or suicide bombing.
Anyone that thinks the majority of this problem of violence that spreads from the ME isn't primarily rooted in Islamic faith is delusional.

This idea has been thought out in many ways. The proposal that moderate Muslims would become enraged (and they would) would be good for the US. That would drive them to create standing armies that we have proven will be wiped off the face of the earth. Plus never start out with the big target let them become scared about their precious space rock being next.
I don't think it would. They know going "musket to musket" with the U.S. would be suicide (the bad kind). I think it would just create more asymmetric threats and make the problem worse than it is now.
The problem behind this is fear. They think they are the only ones capable to dish it out. I am not saying we wont have to be on guard or that Americans won't be put into harms way. But we can go a long way in disrupting them in their attempts if we develop a changed mindset (ie profiling).
So far no one has challenged the ultimate targets they possess and its possible they would implode upon themselves if said targets all of the sudden became vulnerable. Muslims would fight Muslims in a way they haven't before to protect their faith. In other words take an existing problem and exacerbate it exponentially.

It's an interesting theory, but the opposite very well could happen. I thnik the chances are far more likely that we would be viewed as the greater enemy...confirming everything the fanatics have said about us since 1947...and instead of turning on each other, it would create a more unified terrorist threat. Funding and assets would come in droves for the new unified Jihad against the infidels, who just proved once and for all they are after we put a bomb through one of their holy sites.
A case study would be the 2006 bombing of the Shiite Al-Askari Mosque in Iraq. This was even done by rival Sunni's by all accounts...and we still get blamed for it. Can you imagine the uprising if we actually threatened, and then openly followed through with bombing Mecca?
Your idea is certainly interesting, but I don't think it would work.

A better way may be to do covert operations and bombings inciting violence between the Sunni's and Shiites. they already hate each other, let them kill themselves off.
The Middle East would then be total chaos.
Of course, it would be the US Military/GWB's fault.

It might be total chaos for awhile, but eventually it would become a more stable region. There was a study done by the RAND corporation years ago that showed a correlation with oil prices and freedoms/human rights issues in the middle east. Typically, as the price of oil went up, freedoms decreased and human rights got worse. As oil prices decreased, ME leaders became more accountable to their populations and things improved.
