Way Too Early to Tell: Oklahoma vs. Tennessee

I'm not downplaying Oklahoma's win over Bama, but I'm also not gonna downplay the ass-kicking Texas gave them. They'll definitely have the advantage in this game but they're not unbeatable.

The thing about the Texas game is that its a rivalry game and Texas knows tons about them and has tons of experience against Oklahoma under Stoops. Its also on a neutral field, so you will get at least half your fans in attendance.

Tennessee knows nothing about Oklahoma except for game tape. Tennessee has never played a game in Norman, ever. Not to mention so many of our better players are so young and inexperienced, especially on a big stage.

I fully expect Tennessee to lose handily. I also expect the same when we travel to Oxford and to Columbia and Athens, but to a lesser extent. We just arent there yet.

I just hope Butch puts on a good show and we are not embarrassed and I hope Butch takes care of business at home, especially against Florida and Missouri. If we just do that we will be ok.

I think you place too much emphasis on the rivalry angle. And how would you explain their close wins against WVU and TCU? Those two teams won fewer games than Tennessee last season. Certainly, if Oklahoma were the invincible team some are making them out to be, then they would have had an easy day against those two teams.

I'm still saying the odds are against us but are not insurmountable.

Odds are definitely stacked against us. Would be a HUGE upset.

It would take winning the turnover battle by 4+ to have a chance. But its always possible the other team comes out with butter fingers. Hard to beat any team - even one less talented than you - if you are giving them the ball back each series.

Y'all better be right about Tennessee having the ability to go toe to toe with OU in Norman. If not, Stoops will not be as kind as Oregon was last year and he will keep the pedal down to prove that the SEC is not that good.

Vols take a lot of talent, no returning starters on either line and very little overall experience into a hostile environment against a confident program with a lot of talent returning on the offensive and defensive lines.

If you are confident enough to take shots at realistic fans, take the Vols and the points and pay off your house (or your parents' house).

To change the topic slightly, did anyone notice that the author of the article in the OP stated there was a chance Game Day could be in Norman for this game?

The Sooners and Tennessee Volunteers are scheduled for September 13 contest in Norman, which will kickoff at 7 p.m. on either ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2.

Gameday could be on hand for this one. As of right now, Oklahoma and Tennessee is the only match-up other than USC and Boston College tabbed for an ESPN primetime game.

Does anyone think that is really possible?

We beat South Carolina with an inferior team last year and should have beaten UGA with an inferior team last year. The same kind of effort gives us a ballgame with the Okies....

If we beat Oklahoma, Gameday will flock to our next match up at Athens with certainty.

This is the kind of fan our program produces these days. It's sickening.

Maybe that particular fan is just looking at it from a realist perspective. Afterall, can you really blame him with UT's performance against top 5 ranked teams lately?

Yes, I do agree...however Florida STILL managed to beat us convincingly while committing three turnovers themselves. Although it didn't help Tennessee committed six.

I just don't see OU coming out and playing very poorly against Tennessee in Norman.

Actually, if we win, ESPN will be so depressed that they will cancel College Gameday for the season!
.

Not really. For all the putdowns and disrespect we believe is heaped our way, ESPN wants us to win. The moment it looked like that Dooley team had the means to beat Florida, ESPN brought Gameday here. They really do want us to win. There is no fanbase, there is no team, there are no games more thrilling than that of a strong Vols team. Even people overseas are intrigued by the Vols. I suspect it's part of the unique uniform colors and the historically exciting games we play. If anything the snide disrespect is butt hurt and sorrow that we aren't what we once were. They want us back.
