Way Too Early to Tell: Oklahoma vs. Tennessee

Nice article!

Vols will be scrappy, in this one, and score more than the 10 points predicted in the article. In the end, the game will unfold a lot like the Cincinnati - Tennessee game from 2012.

Cinci came into Neyland and showed an explosive offense, but their young defense wasn't quite ready for "prime time" that early in the season. Same scenario for the Vols, heading into Norman.

However, we will see a young UT squad compete for 4 quarters and make some plays. Vols will fall, but not before showing Big Orange fans a glimpse of an inevitably bright future.

This game will be more competitive than the final score will indicate, but Sooners take it by 3 scores.

Oklahoma 41 - Vols 24

Where you been the last 6 years chat vol? I as we'll hope we only lose by 18. Take your East Tennessee blinders off and realize the we can't hang with the big boys like we did a decade ago

Such a manly avi for someone with such a lay-down-and-die attitude. Need an avi of an old lady crossing the street IMO.:eek:lol:

Just saw today where Oklahoma is ranked #1 in Sporting News preseason poll. Call me whatever but I would have rather us bought this game out and paid for a win against an FCS.

Then go cheer for Vandy then. They love fans who are wusses. OU is nowhere near #1, they are just getting a lot of love because they beat Alabama.

He can cheer for Florida. We all know how playing an FCS team worked out for them last year.

I hope the Okla team that almost lost to WVU last year shows up! Overlook our Vols like that and watch Hurd rush for 3 TD's!

Hurd will not run the ball a total of 3 times in this game, maybe a total up to this game .

If we only lose lose by 18 then that means we have made vast improvements and it would be encouraging to me. Every time in the last 6 years that we have played an elite team we have had the breaks beat off of us in the tune of 30 or more (except maybe one time against Bama when Kiffin was coach).

OK brings back a very good front 7 on defense. We need some big plays from WRs to open up the field and loosen the Sooner D. I honestly don't think McKnight is the real deal and I can see their TE reverting back to QB...Bell I think. We will keep them in check on the passing game, and if we can contain their running game and win turnover battle, we will pull off the upset.

First road game for 30+ players.

Big, big test for the offense!

IWe will need some help to win this game. Turnovers, special teams are the only way I can see us staying with this team.

OU returns their front 7 on defense and that could be a problem for our offense. We won't be able to run it down their throat. Best case for us is to be balanced on offense.

OU has been inconsistent in recent years. They lose some they shouldn't and vice versa. Anything is possible but they don't lose many in Norman.

I think we have less than a 25% chance of winning this game.

:lolabove::loco:Are you serious?!? You actually think that one of the best running backs in this years recruiting class will basically ride the pine and have minimal playing time before and during this game? Hurd may not start, but he will definitely have significant playing time. You can't recruit a kid like that and not have him on the field.

Sorry dude, but I have to disagree. Hurd is going to play A LOT right from the beginning. Lane is good, he just isn't very dependable.

And I disagree with you. Like Neal, he realizes this is his last chance to try to get drafted. He will will run as ghe never has before. Knowing he can't let up because he has not only Hurd but Picket and Summerhill who I honestly think is very underrated. lane knows he can't afford to slack off for a moment so will pull a Rajin Neal type season. So says the weatherman, the whether man says.

I hope Lane does perform like you want him to. I think everyone on this message board hopes he performs like that. But if you think that one of the highest rated running backs in the nation coming out of high school isn't going to get significant playing time, regardless of who the guy in front of him is, then you're just delusional! Hurd gets just as many, if not more touches per game than any of the other running backs on the roster. Not only that, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if Hurd doesn't get the nod at the starting position half-way through the season.

WTH???? I didn't anything about Hurd not playing. I disagreed with you about lane not being dependable.
He's going to make the most of his last chance the same way Neal did. Hurd could win the QB job for all I know and it still won't change the effort Lane will exhibit this season. I think I'm talking about baking a cake and you're on the topic of pan fried pies. Both are delicious but they aren't the same desert. Just saying.

I totally agree with you on Summerhill, but I would feel better if he played more snaps in non-garbage time.

I don't think the problem with Lane is effort or ability, it is staying healthy.

Also don't forget about Scott, he should get some quality touches too. Paulk will almost definitely redshirt and rehab that knee some more.

I'd love to see Summerhill in a game too. Nothing like a hungry back who gets a surprise chance to strut his stuff.

Lane staying healthy. Can't argue with that given his history. but we're going to see a Lane heretofore unseen. roadblocks are off, lane' wide open, full speed ahead.

Scott wasn't here for spring practice. He's unproven at D-1 level. We don't even know if he'll arrive in football shape to play.

Paulk, I fear you're right but better a fully healthy player than one who just ruins his chance for both a decent college career and a chance to play pro.

Lane is going to do great. Aside from injuries, he has been very consistent and dependable when he gets the ball. He doesn't have break out speed but he's a great north/south runner and always seems to fall forward. He doesn't dance and simply hits the hole and dump trucks guys from time to time. IMO he will have a better senior year than Neal did.

Injuries were basically what I meant when I said he wasn't very dependable. I actually preferred him over Neal when healthy. I think he will do well this year, but I also realize that Hurd is going to play A LOT. Our RB's are going to be great this year, even if our Oline is only decent. The weapons at WR will help spread the field, so Lane and Hurd both should average around 5.5/6 YPC.

Agree completely; Hurd will get many touches. I'm still nervous about our QB play though. If we don't have a relevant passing game the run game will get stuffed.
