Way Too Early to Tell: Oklahoma vs. Tennessee

We're overrating these guys a lot. Most them haven't played a game yet.

Shhhhh!
Some folks around here have such misery in their real lives that they don't have time for anything that might approach negativity (reality) when it comes to the team.

Why live life through an illusion? I like to be Buzz Killington when people forget about reality.

Overrating and overhyping are completely different concepts. You can say I'm overhyping them if you want since a couple of them haven't taken snaps yet, but I'm not overrating them in the sense that I'm thinking they are better than they really are.

I can only use what I've seen to rate their talent, and from what I've seen they are every bit as good as advertised.

if you look at OU's past season, they squeaked by some bad teams. Knight and Bell were very inconsistent and they both flip flopped back and forth for the starting role. I say we have a better chance than what people give us credit for but they are still dangerous. They did beat a pretty good Bama team, but I honestly think we can upset them but we'd need four quarters of all around great play (captain obvious)

WTH???? I didn't anything about Hurd not playing. I disagreed with you about lane not being dependable.
He's going to make the most of his last chance the same way Neal did. Hurd could win the QB job for all I know and it still won't change the effort Lane will exhibit this season. I think I'm talking about baking a cake and you're on the topic of pan fried pies. Both are delicious but they aren't the same desert. Just saying.

The Sahara or the Gobi? I could see Hurd becoming the starter or at least getting most of the snaps due to Lane being injured. He has been small injury prone over the last couple of seasons. I also worry about Hurd being injured. I'm scared. But I do believe we have a decent backfield behind Lane and Hurd that could turn some heads.

WVU was 4-8 last season and OU only beat them 16-7
TCU was 4-8 last season and OU only beat them 20-17

The only teams they beat by 18 or more last year was
ULM (6-6)
Tulsa (3-9)
Iowa St (3-9)

Seeing as how OK plays Louisiana Tech the first week and then have an open date before us, I think we will know more about our Vols than they will know about their team. Having an open date during the year when you are beat up is nice. Having an open date before you've played anyone worth playing isn't a confidence builder. If they destroy LaT they will still have very few answers and might play overconfident. If they stumble or don't look very good against LaT then they might come in shaken. At least we get 2 decent opponents we should be able to beat and get some much needed game time for our young players before Stormin into Norman. Go Vols!!!

Good post. Many people don't seem to know that Bob Stoops' teams tend to play down to their competition. They beat a good Bama team, but they also got run out of the stadium by a very mediocre (at best) Texas team. Oklahoma is far from unbeatable.

OU has a good program and good players. They are no longer a dominant program, have not been since Stoops has been on campus and will not be for the foreseeable future. They will be favored and should be. BUT OU will not put a player on the field that has more than two arms and two legs, just like our players will all take the field with two arms and two legs. That being the case my expectation is we take it to them and win. Never saying or thinking it's going to be easy, heck to win is hard, the better the competition the harder it is to win. However that is my expectation for every game and my expectation all Vol players should have when they take the field. One thing we should NEVER do is take the field without expecting to win, any player that brings that to the table should not dress out as you've beaten yourself without ever having played a down.

I think we're better in a few areas, linebacker, wide receiver, possibly QB since Worley will have a little more experience there. The trenches and kicking positions are big question marks that make me think this game will favor Oklahoma mightily.

The homer in me hopes we kick dey ass but the realist makes me think we likely take one on the chin that day. This team beat a much more talented South Carolina team last year so anything is possible.

Thank you. This this this. I mentioned these exact same stats last month I believe. Look, do I think we beat them in Norman? No. Do I believe we have a better chance than people give us? Yes.

Say what you will, but I still believe that Bama/OU game was a terrible example of their season as a whole. If the OU that barely won against TCU and WVU shows up, this game could be a surprise. On that some note though, seeing as it is in Norman for one, if the OU that beat Bama shows up, we're in for a long day.

Agree completely; Hurd will get many touches. I'm still nervous about our QB play though. If we don't have a relevant passing game the run game will get stuffed.

I am most worried about playing from behind. Many of the non-knoxville based radio guys are saying its gonna be a looooooong year on defense.

I dont like our chances if the offense is always playing from behind in desperation mode.

We will have to rely on a balanced attack and good o-line to bring out the max potential in our mediocre QBs.

If the defense knows that we have to pass it (short passes and screens dont count) then we will have a very stale offense like last year and a very poor showing again.

Or maybe if the Bama team that played them shows up in Neyland we end the streak against Saban?

Haha that is a fair assessment. Still not sure which game I like our already slim chances in though. Hell if we win both I wouldn't know what to do with myself. I might stroke out.

The OU/BAMA game was the perfect storm. Bama came in with no emotion and Stoops brought the sooners in with their hair on fire. This was like a NC game for Oklahoma. I believe that if we win our first 2 games and play well that we can go into Norman with a punchers chance. Butch will have the boys fired up..that's for sure.

After surviving 95 and 03 I think my ticker could take it.

I'm willing to chance it.

I will bet my money on Oklahoma, a team that beat Bama, no matter how much you guys want to downplay it, over a team that couldn't beat Vandy at home to make a bowl game.

We aren't there yet

I'm not downplaying Oklahoma's win over Bama, but I'm also not gonna downplay the ass-kicking Texas gave them. They'll definitely have the advantage in this game but they're not unbeatable.
