Week 8 AP Poll (10/13/2024) - Vols #11

Some of you need to take a breath. Tennessee, despite how they’re playing at the moment, is still in the thick of the playoff race. The AP and Coaches polls are meaningless these days. Teams currently ahead of Tennessee will almost certainly lose at least once more.

That said, I disagree with those claiming Tennessee is a lock if they finish 10-2. There could be a logjam of Power 4 schools that also finish 10-2. There’s no guarantee that Tennessee will get in ahead of some of them, especially since NC State and Oklahoma have turned out to be bad to mediocre teams.

I am counting wrong? Serious question. Even IF we run the table, I am still counting 7 ahead of us. Remember that some of the conference champions are likely to be ranked below us, and half the teams are now in the big 10.

We’re playing two teams ranked ahead of us on our schedule. If we run the table, we’re good.

It's rare to have more than 12 2-loss or better p4 teams after the season, I would bet this year is even worse, and I doubt an SEC team is left out. For us to go 10-2 at this point, that would mean we beat Bama or Georgia, either is enough for a resume.

We’re still a 1 loss team currently. We are not eliminated. As crazy as it sounds, we could very well run the table. Even if we end up at 10-2 we’re getting in.

Not trying to rain on the outdoor party, but we are not running the table unless some new OL walk through the door. Plus, Nico is seeing ghosts right now………… Boo!

The REAL poll comes out in a couple of weeks. The AP and Coaches polls are useless in the playoffs rankings.

If I'm on the playoffs committee I'm seeing a good defense and a bad offense right now. And our best win to date was at home to a below average Florida team that's coach has one leg and one foot out the door. OU isn't good and couldn't score at a hookers convention. We should have beaten them by 3 TDs. JMO.

AP poll is no longer a sound meteric for any sort of win/rank correlation among other bizarre rankings.

Don't win by a big enough margin, you drop.

You lose (looking at you Bama) to an unranked, and you barely drop.

They lost to Vandy!!!! And were out played by SC.

Next week after we beat them, the narrative will change and it will be that Tennessee beat a bad Bama team.

What I have seen of the vols the last three games, defense coaches have figured out our offense. Bama is due a great game and I wouldn't be surprised that they come to Knoxville and embarrass us. Fla beat us in everything except the score last night. We dropped three because we are terrible on offense and defense. Coach Josh knew he escaped one last night. I know I will get flak for all that I've said but I feel like it's the truth. If Bama shuts down all of our ground game, we are cooked. We don't have that many pass plays.

Seems about right...in reality, we're playing to somewhere in a top 20 team threshold. Will be more shakeups next week in polls and SEC pecking order. Legendary SEC slate this week...just WIN baby!

UT/Bama...hard to think we win, but Neyland will be rocking...we have a chance w/ some breaks.
TX/UGA...hate UGA, but a UGA win would make very interesting last month of games down the stretch.
ARK/LSU...feels like maybe another ARK upset
UF/KY...coin flip. Probably lean to UF if they limit turnovers w/ frosh QB....and Napier saves his job (he's GOOD FOR UF!)
AUB/MIZ...Aub can def win this game

Alabama has a win against the team that’s ranked fifth in this week's poll. That carries a lot of weight. The way Tennessee’s passing game is operating at the moment, they wouldn’t wax anyone outside of the dregs of college football.

Iowa State and most of the ACC/Big12 teams in that list are dregs. Not much better than NC State.

I think it's the UGA win + it's Bama + they pass the eye test of what they "can do". We've not passed the eye test since maybe playing over hyped NCST team. It's pretty obvious, unless something changes, that we're just renting space in the top 10 range.
