What the hell is going on??!

When Tennessee plays in the title game every other year like bama, comparing recruiting head to head would make more sense. Tennessee is just now becoming relevant again. As painful as it is to admit, it's just true. 9 wins. Hiring Scott and Shoop. Things are looking up. Recruiting will follow.

I was replying to the comment that Uga should do better than us because they have a new staff coming in. Just saying that should be a weakness for them...not a positive. And bama is no1 every single year. I certainly don't expect us to be no1. But top 10-12 should be the standard. We could possibly miss the top 25!

Could possibly? Possibly not. Why not wait and see? Butch gets Warrior, Brown, Hill, Simmons, Tatum, Richards, and Bailey, maybe Dickerson, and I think the Booms will be plentiful.

#allclassesmatter :)

Very true but this one is not finished. I don't like the current situation either but trust in this staff as recruiters.

One thing I've learned is that freaking out about or celebrating a class on January 10th is a large waste of time

We have had a tempestuous couple of months regarding our commits de-committing. Slaps to the face after slaps to the face, nothing but terrible news! I know this chit happens in the recruiting world, especially in January, but this is VERY odd. We've lost some solid recruits and it hurts. Kongbo is the latest debacle. Why? Is Butch telling these kids to go elsewhere? They just all change their mind? Aces up staff's sleeves?

I guess what I am wondering is what gives here? Why the huge slide in recruiting? It really has become alarming and disheartening.

I can tell you what is going on. You are suffering from some sort of a mental/emotional breakdown

Every class is relevant. No matter the size.

We have an elite QB who's perfect for our system, so as far as I'm concerned we have all we need. We actually do have depth now and are loaded with redshirt sophomores and freshman, so we can afford to be more selective with our offers. There's no sense in using up scholarships on mediocre recruits this year just for the sake of getting enough bodies for a full class, especially when 1) in-state talent is supposed to be really good in 2017 and 18, and 2) we're going to get a lot of great exposure from on-field success in 2016.

I see your argument but the problem is we will still take 25 or so. We can't say lets only take 16 this year and then take 34 next year. You get 25 pr year.
Things are as good as they've been in a while so I don't wish to be negative here. Just wish we were at least top 15 or so. Maybe it'll happen. But we'll have to land those big fish at the end. And we've been missing on those signing day big fish for a long time

If you undersign, you can back count the next year, I believe.

Is it me, or does it seem the staff is desperate and confused over our standing with the WR recruits? Not sure why we are putting most of our efforts in luring WRs considering Dobbs doesn't like to throw to our highly touted receivers already on the roster and DeBord likes to run the ball 75% of the time.

Right now, for the month of January, I have us targeting:

Official Visit

*****(98) - Mecole Hardman
****(96) - Binjimen Victor
**** (94) - Marquez Callaway
**** (92) - Ahmmon Richards
****(92) - Clyde Chriss
****(91) - Mykel Jones
*** (87) - Keyshawn Young

Offered
****(96) - Quartney Davis
N/A - Latrell Williams

These players take up about half of all the players we are receiving OV's for. Considering we have 3 WR already in this class how many more do we sign? Who do you predict we get?

I still wish there was a chance we land Veus Jones. I feel he would fit well on our team. I think he has moved on though. Mecole is the obvious choice, but I really haven't looked at the others.

I think it's Richards most likely. Then Callaway, but he's leaning toward MS. The staff could come up empty landing another WR.

I think we will be less than 25 this year. 2016 clearly appears is for depth purposes aside from the recruits that prove they can (and will) ball in the early stages. 2017 is the "important" class between the two. I know, I know Bama has great classes year in and year out. We are not Bama YET. The results on the field this year are crucial. If they are what I think they will be, recruiting will care for itself for quite awhile. Until Butch gets lazy...

A lot of people on this board need to get an intimate understanding of the word context. Don't just look up the word and read part of a definition study its meaning and get all up in there.

People around here like to throw out one liners and stats and numbers with no idea what the context of those all are. If you do not under stand that a low ranked class when you are only bringing in about 20 kids is not a big deal. if we make top 20-25 with that fills needs with these numbers this is a good class. Now if we signed 25-30 kids and were ranked this low that's a different story. it is just how the recruiting ranking sites work.

If we get solid kids we can redshirt and have ready for the 2017 season thats a win. There are not a lot of open jobs on this team. The 2 deep is pretty much done as far as what we need to make it to the next level next year. This is a class we need depth. The kid's decommiting and not commiting are obviously looking at the depth chart. We are not at an Alabama level in the minds of these kids where they don't care about the depth chart because they pretty much know they will (in their minds) see a natty before they graduate.

His first 2 years Butch had and fairly easy sell. Lots of playing time. Thats not a card he can honestly play right now. This is the year he has to put a product on the feild to capture hearts and minds of those outside of Big Orange Country. This is the class he needs to build depth and depth guys don't have fancy rankings. Buth has proven he can make fools out of the star makers with some really good diamonds in the rough. Have faith and learn context guys. I am out of beer so gonna step slowly away from the pulpit now.

The context I understand is or at least I believe it is a site like Rivals only counts your highest rated 20 commitments. Sign 25-30, and 5-10 don't even count. As long as UT signs 20, their ranking in relation to the rest of the SEC matters. Twist it any way you want. It matters.

FACT. First 20 in the order of each recruit's respective individual ranking, PERIOD (as far is class commitment rankings). If we only sign 19, or 19 and a kicker, we may falter... This is for at least a couple of the ranking sites right?

Mods..Please delete this thread. Somebody doesn't understand the fluid, ever changing dynamics of recruiting. When the dust settles in the end, UT will be just fine.

My sentiments exactly!

FWIW Jimmy Hyams on 104.5 the zone in Nashville this morning was laying out pretty much the same question that the OP posed and they ran through list of multiple SEC schools that rarely see a class far from top 10. I don't disagree with the post about context although if we ever want to beat Bama again we're going to need a roster that can stand toe to toe with them in the trenches. We can't afford an off year. Hopefully Shoop and Scott can help us make some late noise.

We're the only team, IMO, that stood toe to toe with Bama this year.

...they gave Ole Miss their win with 5 turnovers.

In fairness we did have the open date and they probably were looking towards LSU. It was a good game to watch as a Vol Fan but I'm not going to pin my future expectations to close losses. Where did that 2 point loss to LSU IN 2010 get us?
