From an article on Charlie Weiss
"Listen, it's a polite thing to say, and politically correct, but if I'm happy with a 10-2 record, I'm going to get fired," Weis said. "The two losses were not close. We're not where we want to be. But I'm telling you, with the players we have coming in, including a couple of recruits that nobody knows are going to commit to us, we're going to be a lot better. A couple of years from now, you are going to remember that we had this conversation tonight."
Yet another sign.
i saw this. since i am a domer, i can provide more analysis than you guys on Charlie's statements since I watch all of his press conferences and interviews. First, Weis is a realist. He knows he had a shot at the NC this year.... he also knows that ND is compromised of a bunch of 2* and 3* players, but he (and the team) expected much more, regardless. Charlie is a straight shooter... he doesn't lie -- he will tell it like it is. Charlie is obviously talking highly about his recruits that no one knows we actually have locked -- he wouldn't brag about the future with a couple of 3* kids... i follow the recruiting process very carefully, and we don't have many 3* offers left (they are mostly 4*).
Weis isn't overrated... he took over a team that was 6-6 the year before and had embarrassing losses to the likes of Syracuse (by 30 pts), BYU, Ore St, etc... and turned them into a BCS team. Yeah, we were tied w/ UT in the 4th quarter... but we were also losing to MSU in the 4th quarter this year.... that's why they play the full game =) UT has better talent than ND, no doubt (and they had better talent last year.... and the year before that) -- i won't argue that point, but the accomplishments Weis has made with this mediocre team has been incredible... and he is now getting his new guys in to run "his system". It's exciting for us domers =D
hvwarrior, as i stated, ND is not that talented... sure we have Quinn, Shark, Stovall, and Harris, but for every great player we have 2 mediocre-at-best players (see our entire D and some of our O line). And, Charlie exhibits class in wins and losses. Remember how he went to the USC locker room last year after the crushing loss and shook the players hands and told them Good Game... or Pass Right... or standing with the armed forces after the game as they sing their school fight songs... that's class =)
Back to Weis's statement: the domer nation seems to think he was alluding to Donald, and we all hope that he is! I don't think that either school can say that Donald is a lock with any sort of certainty. Those that do claim it are just pissin in the wind hoping to hit the bucket (like my Tennessee analogy?)
edit: oh and we havent lost "6-7 locks/silents". We lost Benn to UofI... Tez Wilson is still up in the air, but he is a lean to UofI (he was never a lock/silent)... Hughes may be considering UofI, but was never a lock for ND. So, other than Benn, I don't know of someone we lost that we considered a lock....
