I just think he needs to earn his respect...you just don't get it cause you beat the service acadamies year in and year out.
BTW - do you think he stays at ND or bolts for the first NFL job that comes calling?
this is the first time in YEARS that he has played all three service acadmies. It's even a rarity that ND plays Air Force and Navy in the same season (which won't happen again for YEARS (after the home-home ends next year), looking at future schedules:
Future Notre Dame Schedules - UHND.com
ND has had top-25 ranked schedules the past 2 years, so it isn't like we are playing pushovers.
Weis has taken a team that was so inconsistent that it lost to pretty terrible teams like: Pitt (41-38), BC (24-23), Purdue (41-16), BYU (20-17), Mich St (22-16), Purdue again (23-10), BC again (27-25), NCSt (28-6), and Syracuse (38-12).... Syracuse, lol.
Not to mention losing to Michigan 38-0, USC 45-14, FSU 37-0, USC 44-13, USC 41-10, Oregon St 38-21
and BARELY squeaking wins out over Navy.
Weis has improved the team drastically... and, while still not at top-10 calibur, ND has taken great strides... easily handling teams that it couldn't previously beat consistently (Pitt, Purdue, Syracuse, Navy) and being competitive with, or beating, teams with FAR better talent (UT, USC last year, Michigan last year, OSU until the last 3 minutes -- ND was down by 7 w/ 4 mins left in the 4th... would've tied the game if the fumble recovered by Zibby and returned for a TD ruling stayed... bet you didn't know that =P ).
Sure, ND isn't at the pinnacle of CFB, and they are far from it, talent-wise. But Weis has taken over a team with a majority of 2* and 3* players and takent them to two straight BCS bowls. He is also bringing top talent back to ND... something that they havent had in years. He is on pace to haul in 2 top-5 recruitments in a row.
He's garnered my praise b/c he has risen ND back to the "relevants" of college football.
edit: oh, and addressing the salary increase/NFL jobs: ND gave Weis the raise b/c NFL jobs came knocking down the door for him. There was a question asked in Weis's last presser... here's the script:
Q. One other thing. How much have you really embraced the college coaching? Is it easier than you thought it would be, or do you have any desire to go back?
COACH Charlie Weis: I don't have any desire to go back to the NFL. I've embraced it probably even more because it's my alma mater. I love it here; my wife loves it here; my kids love it here. And I don't know if I could have embraced every college situation the same as I did with this one.
He's answered this question multiple times, and he continues to reiterate that he doesn't want to leave ND. NFL job opportunities have already presented themselves to Weis multiple times... so I know he stays, and I'm glad =D
