Whisky, bourbon or scotch and what's your favorite?

I like the more smoky/peatey flavors, but Laphroaig is too far on that end - tastes like pine tar. When I get home next week I will jot down some that I have and you can give them a try. The one thing I learned there was it seems that EVERYBODY there knows about whisky. They must teach a course in high school or something. And the Duty Free shops in Edinburgh and Glasgow have awesome selections. Go to a bar and do a taste flight. You won't be disappointed. And eat haggis. Trust me on that. It's delicious. Seriously.

I'm right with you on the smoky/peaty thing, although I do like Laphroaig, but it is way out at the end of that spectrum. I guess my avi gives it away but I think Highland Park hits the perfect balance there, substantial smoke but well short of the iodine harshness and a really well put together complexity of flavor. Did you happen to make it to Orkney and visit their distillery?

I'm never there long enough for those kinds of rumors unless it is right in Glasgow or Edinburgh. My layovers are only 24 hours.

I like Islays, but only on occasion.

What are people’s favorite Tennessee whiskey?

If I’m allowed to include Belle Meade even though they market their product as bourbon, I’d say mine is their Cask Strength Reserve. If not, for the price I like Dickel Bottled in Bond. Barrel Select is reliable and a smooth sipper.

Every night my dad has been here for thanksgiving we’ve been tasting the different whiskeys I have. The first night we did Tennessee whiskey. The entire Dickel lineup, Belle Meade, and Jack Single Barrel. I was tempted to pick up a bottle of heavens gate to give it a try but at $50 I balked. Same w Uncle Nearest

Last night was 4 roses. Small batch, a couple of the single barrels, a couple barrel picks, and the ‘13 LE Small Batch. That of course was the best but one the barrel picks I thought was fantastic and I can’t remember how I got the bottle. It’s from “MLS/TLS”. Could that be from McScrooges?

Today we’re doing bottled in bond. Old Bardstown which i think is a great value. Dickel. EH Taylor. 1792. And Henry McKenna

Let me know on the 1792. I bought a bottle of 12 year that’s not been tried yet.

I like the different 1792 bottles. They’re pretty unique in flavor. Worth trying anyway for the price. The bottled in bond I get hints of banana which is what I get from Jack too except this is a bit more spicy. Interested to hear about the 12 year old. I haven’t seen that for sale anywhere around here

Went to Total Wine while in Texas. Tried the 1792, Garrison brothers, Dickel barrel select and Jefferson’s cask strength aged at sea. I thought the Jefferson’s was the smoothest of all but for $95 seemed a bit much. Garrison I thought was the worst of the lot at $150. Hot all the way down and not in a warm you up way. Dickel was Dickel, for $55 I couldn’t tell a big difference between that and the 12 and it’s aged 9 years.

Also Belle Meade is distilled in Indiana for now.

Middlebrook/Turnpike had their allocated sale this morning. I don’t know about Middlebrook but at Turnpike some dude set up a tent last night at 9pm and bought Elmer 100 year tribute this morning when the doors opened at 8. I love whiskey but that’s nuts.

I just got a bottle of their Reserve this evening. I may try to stop in their tasting room in Nashville and see if they have any bottles of their Brandy cask left. I have to get back to Nashville tho, I’m flying to Fairbanks in the morning to ride back with a buddy who has been up there working.

I lived in AK for 10 years, Fairbanks is the worst place in the world. Get out of there FAST.

Yeah, I’m not expecting too much but I figured it would be an excuse to see a lot between Fairbanks and Nashville. I’ll only be in Fairbanks for a day or two.

That ALCAN highway is a trip. Make sure you have plenty of gas. This time of year could be scary stuff. Bring emergency gear, food, water etc.
