Who takes over at Alabama?

Nick Saban had never coached in the south before he went to LSU. Urban had never coached in the south before he went to Florida. Harsin didn’t fail at Auburn because of his lack of SEC experience. He failed because he was an arrogant ass who alienated a lot of the boosters and higher ups inthe university.
You’re correct, but we aren’t talking about LSU or Florida. We’re talking about the most dominant program of the last 15 years with more national titles in their history than anyone else. Timing is everything.

Close friend of mine who runs in college football circles - not a public figure so nobody would know him - tells me Saban is retiring at the end of the season. I trust him as he doesn’t share these types of things without solid info.

When it happens, who do you think Bama goes after? Dabo? Sarkisian? Someone else with SEC experience like Lane Kiffin or Dan Lanning? Brent Venables? Or do they go the NFL route?

It would not surprise me if they make a big offer to Kiffin.

I thought about Deboer but he has never coached in the South - that could be a Bryan Harsin situation all over again.

Elko, on the other hand, could be in play. He spent four years at A&M.
I hadn't looked into Deboer, thats a good point about never coaching down here.

it would surprise the heck out of me. if some other big schools were coming after Kiffin, maybe I believe it. but there is a reason he has been at Ole Miss this long.

We don’t know that they haven’t. I made a comment above about most coaches wanting the opportunity to lead a powerhouse program where the annual expectations are national title or bust, just to have the opportunity of a lifetime. Once that happens, either they find out it’s not all it’s cracked up to be, or they rise to the occasion.

Failure has a way of providing perspective so you can appreciate the opportunity for a second chance. Maybe the USC experience humbled him to the point he realizes he has a pretty good thing going in Oxford.

I never thought Bama was a legit option. Dabo has been a god at Clemson. But now he’s struggling and it seems like Clemson won’t pony up so maybe he wants out. But I don’t think that is a legit option.

The other issue is this. Somebody is going to take that job obviously. But why would a proven guy want it? You can make $7M coaching at Kentucky now. Why take that job and get staked with “national title or bust” and probably 3 years AT MOST to prove yourself? Look at what they did to Bill Curry after Bear retired. It’s going to be fascinating.
Pony up what? He makes like $11M according to their message boards. Every one of them blasts him for his stubbornness to not play in the world of the portal and NIL to the degree of others. Now he’s getting defensive with fans that aren’t happy with 3 straight 3 loss seasons. Clemson isn’t going to get anyone better than 11-3 with a conference title for a bad year so it’s stupid for them to expect more than that consistently, given the landscape of college football today.

This long? It’s his 4th year. Who’s a big school who’s had an opening in the last several years? USC, TX, OU and AU are the only ones I know of and we know 1 of those was immediately out for Kiffin and he turned down another 1. So because TX or OU didn’t hire him then nobody will offer him going forward?

4 years is the longest Kiffin has been the head coach anywhere. unless he gets tarmacked again.

wisconsin, nebraska were open. FSU was a hot mess when he got hired at Ole Miss. Oregon hired a completely unproven coordinator. Washington hired Deboer with 1 year of experience at Fresno. Miami went with the alum so maybe not them, but they were open. heck half our fan base wanted to hire him before we got Josh, they would never admit it now. Florida hiring Napier, LSU maybe made the right call, but they were open and didn't sniff Kiffins way.

It's good to know people that have the inside scoop on things. I heard that we will be playing Georgia this year in a driving rainstorm. I have a friend that knows a weatherman in Alabama. You heard it here first.

Seems like Brent Venables could be an option as well but I am not sure if he is interested in Alabama and leaving Oklahoma.

Alabama could struggle to find someone because filling Saban's shoes would be tough and the fanbase is used to astronomical success.

Kirby Smart would make the most sense but he won't leave Georgia, too much connections there.

They could always hire Butch Jones, he has Alabama connections 😄

I know you’ll get trashed on here for your post but I wouldn’t be surprised especially if he lucks up and wins the natty with the second worst quarterback in the sec. Dude doesn’t like NIL and transfer portal at all. Bought a 17 million dollar house on the beach. Tuscaloosa is the left armpit of Alabama. You know he’s ready to get out of there. Also he knows there’s not going to be these 13-0 seasons anymore with more teams coming.

I am about 99% sure you could go back for the last decade and find these exact same "facts" stated every year. on every football based message board in the SEC. and probably a couple more nation wide.
Maybe. The other 99% were wrong.

The school and fans will want Kirby Smart over anyone else, but I just can't see him leaving UGA. Smart could actually step in and keep the machine rolling, but he has UGA rolling, so just makes no sense for him to leave his alma mater.
Kirby's not leaving UGA until / unless he retires / gets fired. Period.

He's a UGA alum and former player. No way he goes anywhere else so long as he remains in good graces with the UGA wise men (pronounced "Money Men").

Whenever Saban does retire AL will have a hard time attracting a proven HC. They'll end up overpaying for a mid-major or NFL coordinator and wander through the desert for a few seasons.
Hopefully for 80 years.
