Who takes over at Alabama?

Close friend of mine who runs in college football circles - not a public figure so nobody would know him - tells me Saban is retiring at the end of the season. I trust him as he doesn’t share these types of things without solid info.

When it happens, who do you think Bama goes after? Dabo? Sarkisian? Someone else with SEC experience like Lane Kiffin or Dan Lanning? Brent Venables? Or do they go the NFL route?

Holy hell OP, what a source you got

As mentioned,if Dabo can adapt to the way the game has change,he'll be perfect choice. Coming home has worked out well recently for Harbaugh and Kirby. It will certainly be interesting for sure who comes next.

I think Lanning fits into the combo of he would consider Alabama + Alabama would consider him.

I agree that all the others would not.
Obvious bias here, I'd love to have Lanning stay in Eugene. As for whoever takes over it's going to be a very tough job. Most people taking over after a Saban type "Legend" typically can't live up to fans expectations. It's better to let someone else come in and fail, then come in and save the train wreck.

There is an entire generation of fans that only know the Saban era. Even if Bama wins a couple of titles the next decade it’s hard to imagine the restlessness won’t reach fever pitch because it isn’t one every couple of years on average.

This would be the most epic offseason in history if Harbaugh and Smart both jump ship to the league as well.

heard a local call in (not a sports show but its the hot topic) say Skip Holtz because he went back to back with the Birmingham Stallions USFL

I could live with it :)

I've wondered what ever happened to him

It's gonna be Kiffin. I bet he has the smallest buyout of all the top candidates and a really good resume that includes a NC stint as OC there. I really think it's Kiffin.

He'll always be in the mix for everything, but I think he's too much of a loose cannon for the Alabama brass to hire him. He'd absolutely take the job though.

Agree, but I think he is the "emergency"candidate of the powers that be. Break glass only when necessary.

Honestly, if you were the hot young coach (like Lanning) or the heir apparent (Dabo), do you really want to follow Saban?

Prediction time-whoever they hire doesn't make it five years. Either the fan base will turn on the coach or the hire will see the writing on the wall himself and move on of his own accord.

I wouldn't be gobsmacked if Bama has to at least to to Kiff after a few people turn them down.

The guy who replaced the guy who replaced Saban is going to be the one you have to worry about.

Dabo hates it probably cause he doesn't have the advantage of paying players under the table and stocking three deep talent any more.
What is preventing a team from paying a player under the table, in addition to NIL?

NIL benefits the teams that have a lot of money (in other words, the big programs). The real change in the sport is the Portal, not NIL.

I owe you an apology. Great call and I didn't believe it. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

Past that, and whatever pound of flesh you want to take, have you got any info on who's next?

I lean in on Lanning because he's SEC seasoned and young enough that if the job eats him, he can still have a good career.

But mostly, you've earned it if you talk crap about half of VN tonight. Enjoy!
