Why is it taking so long to turn around?

Still waiting on VolFootballTroller to tell me when Toledo under Nick Saban beat Ohio State. Where are you? Hiding under your trollbridge? Come on out and play.

Why? Bad coaching selections (offense in particular). Poor and selective discipline. Legacy of Fulmer laziness and Kiffin double-dealing.

Imagine if we would've had someone like Graham and someone like Pittman in place from the start? I think things would've been far better at this point in time for Tennessee football.

This all being said, the head coach said in Destin we wouldn't be a program getting kicked around anymore. If we leave this month 0-5 in conference, then it is obvious we're still a bottom-feeder in the third year of this project.

I'm expecting a 4-4 SEC record this year. That would be a tangible sign of improvement. Anything less just cements the perception that is out there about our program. But that 4-4 mark in the SEC, coming off a 1-7 year prior, would be something Dooley and his staff could sell for the future.

Hope we get that ranked scalp this weekend and break the current paradigm about Tennessee football.

This is sad. The other "rebuilding" coaches mentioned like Saban and Spurrier, had some upset victories.

Neither inherited a situation as bad as Dooley inherited.

Dooley should win this year and has not so far. But it has taken him til now to have a roster capable of those types of wins. This is the year to judge him on.

The problem with the "more time" argument is if things don't get better they will get much worse. We have no status quo to maintain; we have no momentum that will carry us through the traditional wins (Kentucky ect).

Take note Mississippi use to be a national power in the 60s, Nebraska may never be what they use to be so on. Tennessee needs to make a solid hire next despite the cost.

Regardless of what the Negas or sunshines want to say, this weekend will show everything we need to know about whether or not Dooley will be around for another season.

because Hamilton was cheap...
OSU hired Meyer and their 6-0

Ok...if you are serious, maybe I don't get it.

Would you please explain to me what the above has to do with anything relating to this thread or Vol football?

He out-recruited #2 LSU last year.

You use one year And one team as an example? If that's the case then we should be back. You know as well as I know that's a lame attempt to justify your cause. Winning consistently will bring them. What else will he sale to recruits/parents?

We had roster attrition when Fulmer left and Kiffin was hired. Then we had more roster attrition when Kiffin left. We basically missed an entire recruiting class because almost all of Kiffin's recruits didn't pan out. So our situation is similar to a team going on probation because of the lost players. This year we finally have some upper-classmen again and are showing signs of improvement. If we don't lose too many juniors to the draft, we will be preseason top 20 next year with loads of experience. And we will be in year 2 of the 3-4 defense so that side will improve tremendously as well.

Excellent post but the Dooley haters will attack your post.

I thought this was year zero for the 3-4

My concern is that the players themselves are hearing too much about the "process". That's a great message. I get it and I even believe it. But the players have to play with a sense of urgency. They, as individuals, have to be thinking "I'm gonna step up and change the game right here". Otherwise they will always be content with baby steps and moral victories. Preach "process" but coach "time is now".

Yes...Palardy is correct....I hope!

One way, or the other, we need a defining moment. I think that Saturday night is going to be our best chance to judge for the remainder of this season.

Bama and USC are too good for us, so can't use those two games.

Missouri, Vandy, Kentucky, Troy should be wins even if I'm coaching.

Therefore, Mississippi State is the game right in the middle that perhaps defines us.

You use one year And one team as an example?

It's his only judge-able year so far.

His first year he came in during the end of recruiting season, not really fair to judge based on that (although he did a helluva job) and this year's class isnt close to being finished...so...yes.

So far, there is only one year to judge him on recruiting. And in that year, he out-recruited Les Miles following a top-five finish.

Wait, what, you wanted to judge him on the first year, when he didn't even join the team till late in the process?

Or wait, what, you wanted to judge him on this year, when the class isn't even close to being finished?

Well, in my book, that makes you kind of...how to put it kindly...an uninformed fan.
