I think you're just kidding yourself. He knew having them there was a violation; he'd already been caught doing at UWM. Now, if you're just meaning it's not on the level of paying players, then obviously, I agree.

If he would have just told the truth, he'd still be here and we would have all been happy. NCAA made an example out of Dez Bryant for lying and look to continue that with Bruce. That's the only reason he's gone. If he doesn't lie, I bet our season goes a lot better considering we brought Tobias in.

There is plenty of D1 talent in the state we have to keep them from going else where. We do need to recruit some nationaly but we are far better with in state b ballers than football ballers just from the amount of players needed. So I don't agree with the recruiting being an issue.

i couldn't agree more lyls, and my apologies. i thought you were one of those crying "cheat". if anyone thinks that there is a coach out there that doesn't violate ncaa rules one way or another then they are just lying to themselves.

Jackson currently makes about $10.3 million per year with Lakers, so I think we would need to offer him in the $12 - $15 million range to entice him. However, you also have to consider that Knoxville has a much lower cost of living than LA. But with the resources that UT has, I don't see why we can't offer at least $12 million per year. We spend much more than this on athletic facilities, and I would much rather have Phil Jackson as our coach than the new practice facility we built a few years ago. I mean can't Hamilton talk to the Haslams and ask them to finance this hire? Plus what more does Phil Jackson have to prove in the NBA? He has already won 11 titles...if he wants to go down as the greatest coach ever, he needs to cement his legacy by winning some NCAA titles. Now for Coach K, this is probably more of a longshot because he is so loyal to Duke. However, if we offer enough money, who knows what can happen. Plus, just like Phil, this would be a great challenge for Mike, as he as already proven himself at Duke. Let's see if he can rebuild a team from the foundation and lead us to the NCAA title! Now the ideal circumstance in my opinion would be to have Phil Jackson as our head coach and Mike as the lead assistant and recruiting coordinator. This would obviously take some big time cash, but once again, Hamilton is always said to be a great fundraiser. If Hammy wants to save his job, go talk to the Haslams, get them to donate a couple hundred million, and go after both Phil and Coach K. Get it done Hamilton!!!

1. We face the same problem in football, no instate talent except for one city which is closer to most SEC schools than us and have Tiger High in town.Georgia is getting better and thats the state we have to dominate in order to recruit well.
2. Even the possibility that we could face major penalties will scare many coaches.
3. We have NO ONE returning if Harris and Hopson go. It will be a full rebuilding job.
4. Who would want to follow up a guy like Pearl who was as loved by fans as he was and make UT basketball what it is today.
5. Who wants to work for a weak boss like Hamilton who can't even keep you around if he wants you.
6. We are Tennessee, its a cursed establishment. Even when you win, you lose.

I agree with everything except #1. Didn't Florida have two Tennesseans on their starting five when they won back to back national championships.....at least one of those two years?

Brewer and who? They recently signed Prather out of Jackson.

If we can't get the Haslam money, here are some alternative ways we can finance the hire of Phil Jackson or Coach K:

1) Our endowment is roughly $1 billion (it hit a high in 2007 and has fluctuated with the equity markets in recent years but should be back up near the $1 billion mark). About $200 million of this endowment is sitting in money market funds, which means that we are earning next to nothing with interest rates being at historic lows. If we want to improve our return on capital, we need to invest in something that produces a higher revenue stream....and that my friends is ATHLETICS!! Now my proposal is that we take the $200 million that is in money market funds, use it as collateral, and open a revolving credit facility with a consortium of banks. Now, keep in mind that we don't lose the money market investments, and the interest we pay on the revolver will be partially offset by our return on the collateral (which is still earning interest in the money market). The revolver will be for $200 million (fully collateralized); we then borrow off of this facility, and set up a new fund....we'll call it the "Phil Jackson Fund". Once we hire Phil (or Coach K or both), we will use the additional revenue stream from all the fan support and success we are having to pay down on the revolver. In addition, if we can get locked into a fixed rate on this facility, we can utilize the additional interest income off of the collateral to pay down on the debt as interest rates rise in coming years.
2) Get rid of all athletic programs other than football, basketball, women's basketball and baseball. These programs are nothing but cash burn and are financed through the money we make off of football and basketball (our only two programs w/ positive net income). We take the additional money from cutting these programs and offer it to Phil or Mike.
3) **Warning: this suggestion is a long-shot and highly risky, but I'm trying to encourage us to think outside of the box** We hire Charlie Sheen as our recruiting coordinator. If there is one thing we know about Charlie, it is that he is a Winner...he wins here, he wins there...its called bi-winning. Charlie could throw parties and invite the recruits over for a good time (only seniors would be allowed to come of course). The downside to this suggestion is that we would obviously be at risk for NCAA recruiting violations. However, the upside is huge...Charlie definitely knows how to throw a party!

1. We have top ten facilities in basketball
2. We are willing to offer big time money ($2M plus)
3. Tennessee has prove the last six years you can consistently
4. We have a foothold in recruiting at Atlanta
5. We have a fanbase that wants and expects a winner in basketball.
6. The UT administration knows they are on the hook for a good hire after hiring Pearl

If we could lock down the instate recruiting, a few years ago we could have had a team with Corey Brewer, Tyler Smith, Jamont Gordon, Lee Humphrey, Brandan Wright, Thaddeus Young, Wayne Chism, Jarvis Varnardo, Shawne Williams, and others, but no big deal.

I'll try to play hatvol's I mean devil's advocate. Coaches shouldn't profess themselves as being the only clean recruiter in the ncaa all while committing the same violations as other recruiters.

Harris and Hopson will be back next year whether they want to or not. It's their best option.

This is total BUNK.

UF has six in-state players on its roster, as does Syracuse, Alabama and Tennessee.

K-Y has three

Duke has three from NC

UNC has seven out of fifteen.

Kansas has four, and one kid from KC, MO.

You listen to Dan Wetzel too much. Any basketball powerhouse MUST recruit nationally. There is almost no correlation between amount of in-state talent available and the relative worth of a basketball program; just ask Georgia, Georgia Tech, St. John's.

The only hitch in our get-along to find a new coach is the spectre of probation. We're on an even par with the Ohio States of the world when it comes to fan base, facilities, and funds - one step down from Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Syracuse, and the other traditionally elite hoops schools.
