Why UT Will Not Get a Big Name Coach

I will give you that turmoil in the upper echelons can be a red flag, but if I were a coach looking at the situation here, I wouldn't think "this crazy AD can't make up his mind"--I'd think "don't lie to the NCAA or my bosses."

What I meant by working for Hamilton being a negative is that he is the boss but showed in the Pearl situation that even if he wants you, it still doesnt mean you'll keep your job which will scare some coaches.

It's not going to scare anyone. I doubt most coaches would expect to keep their job after committing 9 major violations.

The idea is to hire a guy in his coaching prime--or better yet, about to hit his coaching prime. That is what we did with Pearl, and it worked; that is why successful mid-major coaches are often sought after--they are youngish, typically, and on the way up. A lot of big-name guys--say, Pitiino--are at least three-quarters burned out by name, IMO. So you get a guy who's had success at a mid-major and has enough good contacts and charisma to recruit well. You get another guy like Pearl, frankly--and hope he doesn't succumb to his ambitions as Pearl did. I think Pearl got ambitious, got in trouble and then did the wrong thing, lied to the ncaa, and a wonderful career blew up in his face. We will have trouble replacing Pearl, who was not only a good coach but loved UT. The guy LIKED to wear that hideous orange jacket--and it even LOOKED (almost) good on him. They painted his chest and stood in the stands. Hated to see him go...

it seems to me since the NCAA fired pearl, they would have told us what the penalties would be and that could be passed on to a prospective coach....op seems to forget we are one of the top schools in attendance and revenues.....maybe a little prozac is in order....

That goes with Pearl. By the end of next season the black curtins will be back. No one that UT can hire has the charisma of Bruce Pearl.

A lot of people think we will get a great coach. Please me if we did. But, Tennessee is not the Mecca of college
basketball. We will get another also ran. I think we lucked up with Pearl. The sanctions will still be heavy even without Pearl. The NCAA will not fall for Hamiltons
maneuver to lessen sanctions. We will return to thinking
twenty wins is a great season and those will be few and far between.

This was not a Hamilton maneuver. Hamilton supported Pearl. Pearl was fired by Jan Cheek and the board. Hamiliton admitted that in is infamous radio interview when he said that these decisions were not up to him.

1. We face the same problem in football, no instate talent except for one city which is closer to most SEC schools than us and have Tiger High in town.Georgia is getting better and thats the state we have to dominate in order to recruit well.

Wayne Chism, Jajuan Smith, Tyler Smith, JP Prince, Chris Lofton, Scotty Hopson. All some of the best players UT has had under Pearl. All from TN or our neighboring state of KY.

That may be true but most AD's want the guys their own staff of coaches they have personally hired and coaches now that and Hamilton appears half in half out that will scare some coaches.

I dont remember the details. He was never interested in playing here so we didnt really follow up. For some reason Cal didnt recruit from in state although there was a lot of talent floating around.

Well, at least now you're recruiting in-state and grossly underachieving. That must be satisfying.

Well, then you obviously weren't watching a lot of basketball in those 40 years.

I started watching TN basketball on the tv reruns of games on a local tv station around 1970. I bought season tickets in the first year that King played. I never missed a home game for most of the 40 or so years that I have had season tickets. And I have attended practices under serveral different coaches. Devoe had some good years, Oneil was probably the best coach but his teams were so boreing that you could fall asleep at the game. Houston was a total bust. Peterson could not coach a lick, he absoultly refused to defend the 3 point shot and it cost him game after game. Green was the most arrogant and least respected by fans. No coach has even come close to Pearls accomplishments which are too numerous to mention. Not even the great Mears reached the heights that Pearl did.

2. Even the possibility that we could face major penalties will scare many coaches.
3. We have NO ONE returning if Harris and Hopson go. It will be a full rebuilding job.
4. Who would want to follow up a guy like Pearl who was as loved by fans as he was and make UT basketball what it is today.
5. Who wants to work for a weak boss like Hamilton who can't even keep you around if he wants you.
6. We are Tennessee, its a cursed establishment. Even when you win, you lose.

It must suck to live in pessimism and negativity. You made maybe one or two decent points, but I think the positives easily outweigh the negatives. I think UT will get a big name coach simply because of the relevancy that is UT basketball as of now.

Dude its just way to many negatives to to deal with right now. You know nothing about business. In a few years if all the sanctions are gone and hammy is gone or back on solid ground then yes ill be standing right with you guys screaming for a top notch coach. But until then im living in the real world knowing that the odds of getting a coach especially from the big east or the nba is gonna be hard to pull off.

1. In basketball it doesn't take as many recruits as football. Wish we would cut the Memphis area lose and concentrate elsewhere anyway.
2. Penalties should be over before the magical three to four year grading period is over anyway.
3. Still have a decent roster even with these guys leaving...different system might help.
4. Lots of folks
5. Just an opinion.
6. No such thing as curses...WD might disagree!
other than that....I agree 100%
