There weren't many people that were. I'd say a good 85% of the country was for that when it was passed. It passed the House by a 357-66 vote and the Senate by a 98-1 vote. The country was absolutely freaked out at that time.

i don't think it was just libertarians who had concerns. i think many conservatives also had concerns. i knew this new dept would eventually be abused.

any dept will be abused when you put liberals in charge of them.

Not at that time they didn't. Only 6 Republicans in both the House and Senate voted against it. All of the opposition came from Democrats.

Remember, that was when the narrative that Bush was Hitler, a war criminal, and a wannabe dictator creating a 1984-like police state was being pushed. When the letter after the name changes from a R to D, then all the Rs have to oppose the same kind of stuff and the Ds have to support it. :)

Bizarrely, you are correct. Not in the sense you mean though.

But in the sense of the decentralization of society to the ego, which may very well be the inevitable outcome of democracy under late capitalism.

I bet you never thought you were a "liberal," but you are.

Big Brother has been out there since before 9/11. At some point you just accept the fact that your phone calls/emails, etc. really don't interest anyone and carry on with life.

No. There was almost no concern from the right and mostly partisan concern from the left (which magically disappeared in 2009).

If we're a society of cowards, it's because we tolerate this kind of behavior from our govt. Our founding fathers wouldn't have tolerated it and I don't think generations prior to the Spanish-American war would have either.
