If he makes the tourney this upcoming season he stays. If not he will be gone.

We have not had a roster this talented since I can remember. Even in BPs best years. I expect top 3 in SEC and sweet 16.

If he doesn't make the tourney at all, don't see how he comes back,

After this year, he loses 3-4 potential NBA players, so I don't see UT having a roster like this again for a couple of years at least.

Martin's team even without Golden will probably make the tournament, if not he is done. Probably looking at making it next year and then a wait and see the next.

Wow, another one of those threads again. This thread is about as annoying as Zach Galifianakis character in Hangover3.

He'll make the tournament this coming season, miss it the next year, recruiting falls further, miss the tournament the next year, and be fired. So he'll have this season and two more. Remember these are always financial decisions. As long as he's putting 17-18k in the seats he'll be here for eternity.

When did you graduate from the University of Martin?

If we miss the tournament in the 2013-2014 season I think he will be fired before 2014-2015 season.

The question really is this "If Tennessee makes the tournament in 2013-2014 but misses 2014-2015 will he be fired anyway?"

For what its worth, I think we make the tournament in 2013-2014. Anything after that weighs heavily on recruiting. Cornish is a good start but the jury is clearly still out on that subject.

For what its worth I thought we were a tourney team this year, unfortunately the NCAA selection comittee and the seeming majority of UT fans disagreed. The point is worthless at this time but I am going to say it anyway; in my opinion had Ole Miss not won the SEC tournament we would have been dancing this past season. This clearly is my biased and uninformed personal opinion, but is my opinion none the less.

The fact that we lost in the first round of the NIT does not support your point of us being a "tourney" team. The team underachieved all season. And that's a fact Jack!

My bad! We lost to (College of Charleston) not Coastal Carolina.

My point is that we still lost to teams that we should have beaten. M.T.S.U., Austin Peay & College of Charleston...
saint Pearl lost regularly to similar teams. People tend to forget we lost the heart and soul of the team before the season started. Given that, the team did better than anyone WITH A LICK OF SENSE could expect. The fan base here must be really young because they seem to get our men's bb program mixed up with the womens or maybe the football program. Our mens bb program has historically sucked. Mediocrity is a step up from the norm. Trust me no one in the ad much cares if we go dancing as long as the program stays in the black on the balance sheet.

Awesome. Since UT has sucked in the past it's ok to accept mediocrity. Great viewpoint. Why try and get better.

Pearl lost some games that final year that we should have won, but no way was that the norm. If that was the norm he would not have averaged almost 25 wins per year. So now you advocate mediocrity?

Haven't looked at the numbers, but I would tend to believe that TN has been in the top 3 basketball programs in the SEC since 2000.

Since we all tend to operate in the past---Martin took over a very undesirable situation from Pearl. We are going into year 3---no excuse for this program not to be dancing. Last year, and I don't care what anyone says was a combination of poor conference scheduling and UT not taking advantage of the opportunities it had to get in the tournament. The SEC was only a 2 bid league (3 with Ole Miss)---while everyone and their brother got in with the Big East and Big 10...it was a lot of bias towards those league because you a had a lot more of the good tournament teams in the Big East and Big 10.

I think I could coach this team (barring major injuries) to the big dance this year. So if he does get in I don't believe it will show a lot about his motivational skills or coaching ability. With the talent on this team, he should finish no worse than 3rd in the league, & make a very deep run in the NCAA...elite 8 IMO. We shall see.

Yeah. I think Wade could do big things with this team.

Figured these posts were coming...before it was he's gotta make the dance. Now they see the team he has assembled and its, elite 8 or you're outta here.

A decent discussion until this post, and I'm a Pearl fan. It always turns into a Pearl/Martin debate.

Really? When the guy says "Hell, Martin lost to College of Charleston...I don't have faith in his coaching ability" but showed faith in Pearl's, and I respond with a loss that was much worst than College of Charleston, I'm the one that ruined the discussion?

Ok, Martin hasn't lost South Carolina, LSU or Auburn. Has not lost to Florida, has not gotten beat by 29 to Kentucky. He's done a lot of good, now he needs to make the tournament. I've never said he doesn't need to, and I've never said I'm thrilled he hasn't. However, I'm not the one who thinks the world is coming to an end and talking about life without him constantly.

Have to admit.
Talent can be an equalizer when coaching is suspect.
Ask Cal.
