Will Tennessee ever return to national contender status?

All good points and I will add another VERY important factor that gets dismissed by those whose agenda it doesn't fit -

Tennessee is middle of the pack in NIL money. Until we figure out a way to catch up with the programs that are outspending us, the results ceiling is going to remain lower than what many think should be accomplished.
Winning cures all. Knocking off the benchmark teams… teams ranked #1-10 on a consistent basis. Being ranked higher and not flirting on the back end of the Top 25 or out.

Anyone against this is part of the problem. “Fulmer said athletic department administrators Angie Boyd-Keck, Donna Thomas and Tara Brooks told him the importance of hiring someone with a connection to the program.”

Yea, totally against it. What's the source for this? What important is getting the best coach you can find, not someone with a connection to the program. I have trouble believing the three administrators would engage in such lame thinking.

There are lots of programs, on the men's sides as well and including football, that place some weight on connections to the program.

Why did Harbaugh get hired at Michigan, was he really the "best" coach on paper they could get, after he had flopped at his most recent jobs.

The belief seems to be that that ties to the program bring loyalty, extra commitment, favor among alumni and donors.

Is the guy Texas A&M just hired really the "best" coach out there in an absolute sense (16-9 at Duke) but he has ties to the program.

Of course, it is not the only factor but if you have two candidates who are roughly equivalent and one has ties, the connected coach tends to get the call,

According to KNS, they did.

UNC men’s basketball also notoriously hires people (with varying amounts of success) who have ties to their program.

Harbaugh won at Stanford, went from 4-8 to 12-1 in four seasons. Easy hire after he took them to the BCS Bowl victory. NFL entirely different conversation.

That's an interesting statement. What are the indicators to validate women's coaches are more vital than men's coaches?
This is just my personal opinion and has been for along time....

Among the reasons i think this is because of prep time before college the men are more prepared than the women, though less so than a generation ago

also women i think are as a whole more impressionable than the men are making HC position key spot as influencer again JMHO

Seems as if sweet sixteen is the new standard of success on the board and perhaps in administration even though it is a low bar.
ya and the sweet sixteen sucks there is nothing good about it if you are not ranked in the top few in WCBB then you have no chance of a national title

The 1950's called. It wants its retrograde gender ideology back. I guess the idea of marriage as a partnership never occurred to you or that this work-life arrangement might be the best way for Kellie and Jon to have coaching careers and raise their kids.

What would Jon’s coaching career look like without Kellie? QUICK!

idk whether to be happy or sad about this

Should be happy for Lady Vols for being most watched Women's game...

If you're going to be sad about discrepancy in the amount of viewers ...you shouldn't..be at all ..that will always be that way sorry to say...

I just want to say my small piece and I’m running back out of here. I truly deep down in my heart, and actually had a dream about it (I’m a clairvoyant….jk) believe there is 1 person that could restore our tradition and relatively quick.

I’ve said their name last year I believe and the year before when we had our annual “Kellie isn’t the right coach” debate. Lol I won’t say it again because I don’t feel like arguing lol but I truly believe all the stars are aligning for them to come here and coach!

I’m still praying and crossing my fingers to this day that it happens but as someone mentioned, there is only 4 iconic coaches left in the game - Dawn, Geno, Tara, and Mulkey. 3 of which are on the backend of their careers. Our next hire, if Kellie doesn’t get the job done, needs to be someone who is able to become just as iconic and RECRUIT the horses we need to make Tennessee a national power again! I’m getting my campaign gear prepared if that day we start looking for a new coach comes! 😂

at least UNC had sense to get him out of job in 3 years

right....and then hired Roy Williams--a big-name, experienced coach who'd been with Kansas, a powerhouse program, and won a title there. And UNC's fortunate improved dramatically under Williams, who won two national titles with the Heels. Williams is an alumnus of UNC--so there was a connection--but his coaching chops were Grade A.

Great for WBB in general, bad for us. Did not need one more chance to be underwhelming in an extremly ugly game in front of alot of eyes. Afraid that game reinforces a not great image of the LVs.

It’s not healthy for some posters to be this narrow minded about the perception of this basketball program.

Nobody is ever going to be able to speak irrelevance or a negative perception of Tennessee WCBB. You just can’t. It is like the New York Yankees. Boston Celtics. Atlanta Braves. Duke Men’s Basketball. Alabama Football. Dallas Cowboys. San Antonio Spurs. Chicago Bulls.

People have noted and seen greatness in these franchises.

They will be celebrated and followed until they reach a championship once again.

If Tennessee is on Primetime again during Thanksgiving in the future you can bet another record will be set.

Just learn to take publicity for what it is and this could have been nothing but good for the program. It was highlighted various times that Rickea Jackson was out.
Fans that didn’t get a chance to watch her play, I am sure will watch the next time Tennessee plays a Nationally Televised Game.

Harbaugh had a 70% winning record as the 49er’s coach prior to going to MI. His winning record at the collegiate level (3 stops including MI) is 75%.

In case folks aren’t aware, Harbaugh grew up in Ann Arbor and he was the Wolverines starting quarterback in the 1980’s - he’s in the top ten for almost all metrics.

I was living in MI when he was hired and the decision was greeted with delirious applause. It seemed incredibly natural and logical. But during his first few years, when he didn’t have the success he is currently enjoying, fans were calling for his scalp.

The short answer...yes....the long answer....when the right coach gets the right players. Is that Kellie ? I think she is a good coach and a good recruiter but Tennessee is a great program that should have a great coach and a great recruiter. I am not saying that Kellie can not be that coach but she is not that coach now. If Tennessee gets the right coach (it could still be Kellie) then they will be a huge force moving forward. The fan base is strong and the facilities are there. There is no reason that Tennessee should not be in the national championship conversation every year.
Need to find this era’s Mickie DeMoss…
