The NCAA needs a “name” program to fall on the sword so to speak, for all the nonsense going down with the blue bloods, and me thinks Memphis May just be that program. And it brings a smile to my face!Nothing to see here matra worked out pretty well for Will Wade. "wire taps don't mean anything, we're all good" and apparently, they are.
Penny was deemed a booster, which made it illegal
Penny wasnt forthcoming during initial NCAA eligibility review. That's going to be the bigger issue
That's kind of my point. From a legal standpoint, had Coach Pruitt or Barnes attended and donated to UT 11 years ago, would that make them boosters in the eyes of the NCAA?
**Can't speak to his forthright Penny was to the NCAA. None of us can.
As Tark said: The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky they're going to give Cleveland State another year of probation. The NCAA needs a “name” program to fall on the sword so to speak, for all the nonsense going down with the blue bloods, and me thinks Memphis May just be that program. GBO!!
I personally think it's really fair to be honest. Penny moved the kid and paid thousands of dollars so the kid could play on Penny's AAU team in Memphis. Then being the number 1 recruit in the county, he owed Penny for helping his family out. If Wiseman stayed in Nashville he could have wound up at Vandy or UT (who knows). Penny helped the family so the kid commits to Penny down the line to pay it back. It definitely created a edge for Memphis recruiting him.I don't like Memphis, but this feels pretty unfair. As far as I know, the NCAA doesn't have jurisdiction to ban a player from moving to play for a high school coach. Penny had no association with Memphis at the time other than it being his alma mater and doing what many of us have done, that being donating money to their school.
What's to stop the NCAA from coming after the Vols on something trumped up? I'd be shocked if none of our players in football or basketball had something similar happen to what happened with that Ohio State player this morning. I'm all for Memphis going down, but not like this.
Penny knows he is a booster. Penny knows he paid a recruit money. Penny knows that paying a recruit is illegal. Coaches attest they are unaware of NCAA violations
See Tressel, Jim (he got fired for lying on the attestation)
So Penny paid for this kid and his family to move to Memphis, coached him in travel ball, high school and now college, right? Memphis sold their soul to get this kid, by hiring penny, they knew they would get him, because they knew of the relationship between the two.Penny knows he is a booster. Penny knows he paid a recruit money. Penny knows that paying a recruit is illegal. Coaches attest they are unaware of NCAA violations

That wasn't my question. Has Tee Martin donated? Does that make him a booster? Can he still hit the recruiting trail without eyeballs from the NCAA on him? That's the precedent being set here.

There was a certain coach that I know who lied to the NCAA........It is likely Penny was part of the eligibility review process in May that deemed Wiseman eligible
Since May, new facts including over $10k in payments, have been brought to light.
That means 2 things
1. Penny as a booster paid $$$ to a player
2. Penny lied to NCAA in May
Look, I’m not trying to be rude but, I hate Memphis, so stop trying to rain on my parade and quit bringing Tennessee in to this. Memphis is the program in question right now, not Tennessee. And I couldn’t be more happy with how ugly this looks for tiger high right now! That wasn't my question. Has Tee Martin donated? Does that make him a booster? You just explained the problem right here. That classifies Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway as a Memphis booster. It's a bit of a gray area, because this type of circumstance isn't common, but this certainly isn't unfair. Also, I would wait for more information to come out about Hardaway not being forthcoming with the NCAA during the initial eligibility review before feeling sorry for them.I don't like Memphis, but this feels pretty unfair. You’re right and I apologize for coming across as an @$$. You are just trying to have a reasonable conversation and I let my hatred for Memphis and joy in the fact that this is/could get ugly for them, get the better of me.I don't care about tiger high because it's not a high enough profile program to waste energy on and it's not in our conference. I do, however, have enough humanity in me to call ******** on the NCAA. And forget Tennessee, this could theoretically affect just about any program that's hired a high school coach to be part of their staff, or even one with ties to the area. The NCAA works as its own judicial system and adopts it's own precedent, so I think it's valid to be concerned about the implications. Doesn't matter if its Memphis, Alabama or ourselves.
