and those orange colored glasses, show only the beauty.....
nope. this team has glaring weaknesses. up front we're not where we need to be. the rb's have been inconsistent. the defense as a whole has been porous all year. Special teams has been extremely incnosistent this year.

all of that based on what we're used to from TN football.

but you have to also recognize the good...and there has been plenty of that too.

this team isn't perfect or what i would call "what i expect" either. but the ineptness that the 05 team showed looks to be a thing of the past.

i think this year has opened up the door again for the next couple of years for us to be a real factor again.

this year we just don't have all the pcs to the puzzle to be that great team. and we all knew that going in to this season...yet here we are at 7-2, with a chance at 10 wins. there won't be any rings at the end of the season...but i think there's still plenty to play for and plenty to hang our hats on as TN fans.

and hopefully, we'll get better in the future and get back to those really high expectations we're all used to. This year was a big ? and we all knew it. i think a lot of the questions have been answered. there are still some that need to be addressed...

bottom line, we're back to the ho hum 9 or 10 win season at TN...and that ain't bad. it just isn't great or exceptional.

hear hear! I also consider that to be a great post Jake. Before the season I tried to articulate that with the addition of the 12 game (and it's not like UT was trying to schedule a competitive team when they got AF on there) changes my perception of what consitutes a good season. In order to put the record in a proper historical context IMO you have to look not at number of wins but number of losses. I agree that in years past 10-1 or 9-2 regular season was ho-hum about what we expected even if it was not what we wanted. An 8-3 season however could easily get the natives restless as I seem to recall after the 2000 season. Hence, I accept 1-2 regular season losses as par for the course. Give me a birdy and I'm ecstatic. Give me a bogey and I'm pissed.

Well, I don't know about everyone else but going into this season my expectations were pretty low.

Even if we lose to Arkansas, beat Vandy and Kentucky, and then go to a decent bowl and win, folks we'd be looking back on a 10-3 season with a bowl victory. I'd say overall that is a pretty darn good season. Is it 1998 good? No, but it would a positive step in the right direction to get back to that.

Regarding Fulmer, you don't win 80% of your games and be a bad coach. Fulmer is a darn good coach and, more importantly, a good man. He is a class act. I do believe he has let his loyalty to his assistants get him in some hot water but I think that lesson is learned.

your point about the 12th game is taken...scheduling af shouldn't affect the L column at all. but one thing to also consider is the lack of the 2nd week off during the season. i think we all realize now, that the 2nd week off in reality is a big deal in college football. Which makes what Auburn and ARK (if they win out that is) so impressive. Auburn may go 12 straight weeks with only one loss. Do you know how healthy you have to stay to do that? Ark will close the season 8 straight after it's bye in week 5, against the toughest part of the schedule.

either way, more than 3 losses should be unacceptable at a place like TN. Generally each year there are at least 3 teams on your schedule that you know will be toughies and could be losses.

this year, before the season anyway, i pegged Cal, Florida, UGA, and LSU as ?. ARK and USC were traps, but games we should win.

now that the season has played out...we know UGA was a fraud and was a game we shoul've won. But Ark jumps in there as a big time ?. We beat Cal, lost to UF and LSU (as expected). We beat Ark and i'll be elated cause they have replaced UGA on this year's schedule as THAT game on the road you really want to win. that's just the way it is. Every year, one or two teams pass expectations by and one or two teams are huge let downs..

here's to us not being the let down any more.:hi: i would rather have 50 years straight of 8 and 9 win seasons than have to go thru one more 5 win season.

Neyland Stadium needs to step it up. It's way too easy for a good team to come in and get a win there.

On that 4th and 7 play at the LSU game, I was shocked to look around and see A LOT of people just sitting there like we were winning by 40..

I was at the stadium, but I was in a suite (glass was pretty insulated), so I really didn't get the full effect. It seemed pretty loud.

It was loud, but could have been way louder if the other 20,000 people decided to move around a little..

I am a Fulmer supporter but 7 wins only would be reason enough for the rumor mills to start up again. Is there a magic win number?Thoughts?

7 wins and three games plus a bowl to go. He could finish with 11 wins. I am not really sure what this thread is asking?

geesh... mods can we at least put this thread w/ the fulmer great coach but thread? no need for two fire fulmer threads with what's happened so far this year

I'm not a Fulmer fan by an stretch, but I think he's safe even if he loses the next 3 games and loses the bowl game.

Safe this year with the understanding SECG next year. Expectations high again. If not, the seat will get warm.

7 wins would mean 4 losses, with one being to Vandy or Kentucky, or both of them, yea, id say that'll do it, but it aint gonna happen, we will finish with 9 or 10 wins, IMO, which after 5 wins last year, would be acceptable.

heh, let's fire them all and hire Hal Mummy or Tim Curry.

fulmer haters need to be careful they actually get what they wish for. Buzz Peterson should have taught you that firing a successful coach doesn't always mean his successor is the savior of the program.

Not really, I was in the stadium. The whole stadium, even the student section is tired. A lot of people are too nervous to yell at 4th down and 7

Its Fulmer's job till he doesn't want it anymore! Wins and losses have nothing to do with it! But it does make for fun debate!

Fulmer has done a good job coaching this time and assembling the right pieces to move the program in the right direction. He's to be commended for his coaching thus far, I think his job is secured.

Do you mean seven wins for the entire season?

If so, that would mean we were 7-6 for the entire season and closed out with a five game losing streak including losses to Vanderbilt and Kentucky. At that point I think a lot of fans would be very upset and Fulmer's position could in jeporady.

I think he needs at least one more win to be totally out of the woods. Personally I haven't given up hope for an 11-2 season. I think we can beat Arkansas and should beat Vanderbilt and Kentucky. The bowl game could be tough depending on who we draw.
